Yes ePocrates from card!

There's a new app on PalmGear, "AdvantageRx" that says it will allow you to run and sync ePocrates from your expansion card but it's OS5 only.

This guy is going to make a fortune!!

Just know that you MUST leave 3+ MB free on your Clie anyway.

You tried it? Damn, too good to be true.

Alan is right, it move it back and forth to run and sync. NO real memory savings. TOO BAD, just too good to be true!

35K is just the size of the app itself. AFAIK, it basically just acts like PowerRun and automatically copies the files from VFS card to Ram and then deletes it when your done. Thus you need to have an equivalent amount of free Ram free to use it...

P.S. If you have a OS 4.1 pda, you can manually do this your self using PiDirect II and PowerRun. However with PiDirect II, you DON'T need to have same amount of Ram free!!! Unfortunately, there is no Os 5.x version of this... :(

has anyone tried the software and how do you use it? Thanks

jgilfor 04-24-2003 11:52 AM

I've tried it for the past two weeks. The application simply copies all Epocrates-related files to the card. On hotsync, the files are moved to RAM (hence the requirement to have that amount of RAM available), then back to the card after hotsync.

IMHO, there really isn't any advantage except perhaps the feeling that you have more RAM available than you do. It's kinda' nice to see 4.7 meg available instead of 1.3 meg, but this is merely illusion... you can't fill the machine without preventing the utility from working.

considering how popular this app is and the fact that it is no longer freeware for the "full" version, it is ridiculous that they have not yet made it word with memory cards.

You guys aren't seeing the real advantage of this software. I think it's great. Freeing up that extra RAM allows you to run other programs off the card that are memory intensive. For instance, my Clie used to freeze up sometimes when reading large iSilo docs because I ran out of free space. That doesn't happen anymore with this program.

Also, try using this program in conjunction with the newest edition of ZLauncher (version 3.5B4). ZLauncher does essentially the same thing as AvantageRx, but for other software. Example, I have Mapopolis plus a few maps stored in ZLauncher's new Apps directory on my MS. When I open Mapopolis the program plus maps are transferred to RAM and then back to the MS when I exit the program.

Yes, it would be nice if it were possible to run ePocrates directly off the card, but this is the next best thing.

Re: Yes ePocrates from card!

I would recommend the new app Tarascon Pharmacopoeia Beta. It has a much better GUI and runs and syncs with the memory stick.

Seriously, you guys are missing out if you don't have Tarascon. Much better app and it stores on the card. Couldn't ask for more.

berliner 06-20-2003 05:39 AM

Thanks for the info guys. I've started using Tarascon and I'm getting rid of ePocrates. ePocrates is much better now with AvantageRx, but I think Tarascon is better (loads faster, better info, and has interaction program equivalent to ePocrates' Multicheck).
