Or almost: I didn't buy a new device, I just made a proper (secure) hard reset, and then I reinstalled everything from backup BUT ZLauncher. I had in mind to do that for some time already, because I was almost sure that ZLauncher was slowing my device down. And as it happens, it was true, because I now have a much more stable, much faster LifeDrive! It's really like I have a whole other PDA!

Couple of things I noticed:

1) The newly installed applications, though it's the same batch as before, need about 10 MB less "RAM". Granted, I removed ZLauncher, but it's not as big as that...
2) There was a very noticeable lag, not only when I was switching applications, but also when a dialog was opening, or a menu, before I could select a button or a menu item. This is gone now.
3) The device is much much faster, even switching between big applications is as fast as it was on my Clié.
4) Since the change 3 days ago, I didn't have one single "prefDB" reset. Before, I had at least one a day.

I AM JUST SO HAPPY NOW.

So it's bye bye ZLauncher, and to replace it, including the "QUickLaunchEverywhere" feature, I now use HiLauncher, and I am more than delighted with it!

Laurent

LifeDrive can be a nice companion if and only if you are careful with what you put inisde (apps)

Hmm. I've been using ZLauncher with a few plug-ins for a few days now with no problems. I haven't however enabled Quicklaunch Everywhere. I've always avoided it per ZZTechs warning. Could that have been the problem?

Hi,

Could be. I am under the impression that a resident was slowing everything down. Other than QuickLaunchEverywhere, the only residents I have enabled are from Beiks (EN-DE-FR Dictionaries) and the Oxford Chinese-English dictionary. I reinstalled both and avoided QLE, and it really seems to have solved the problem.

Hi,

What's a 'resident'?

Hi,

Not sure if it's an "official" word, but it's often used to describe small applications that run in the background, and which are able to "pop" in front of an active application, without causing a real application switch. In Palm OS 4, this functionality was performed using hacks.

For example, I can open my english-french dictionary from iSilo, when I want to look a word up without leaving iSilo altogether.

Had a lifedrive for about 3 months before I installed zlauncher. I have seen no difference in the speed and stability of the device from before to after. It is just as stable as it was before and just as fast. Not sure what your problem was, but it doesn't make sense that it was zlauncher alone that caused your problems.

Hi,

All I know is this simple equation:

LD + ZLauncher + Set_of_applications = Problems;
LD + Set_of_applications = Pure_Heaven;

I just did the math ;-)

And also this: Do you use the QuickLaunchAnywhere feature of ZL? It's the suspect number one for me, at least for slowing things down. Also, I was using a skin. What I mean is, ZL has many many settings, so it might just be that one certain set of settings is not good with the LD. Rather than looking for the guilty setting, and considering that I found HiLauncher, it was really an easy decision.

Hi Laurent,

Wise decision. I did the same and substitute ZLauncher by Launcher X.
QuickLaunch Anywhere was subtutited by the own 'Favorites' of LifeDrive, no need of new programs really :)

I also enjoy a new LD with more than a month without resets and incredibly fast

almost an identical experience to Ibugnion....I was using QLA in ZL and that may very well have been the problem. After hard reset and restore (no ZL), my backups are now ~ 4Mb whereas they were >10Mb before. Dont know where all the xtra rubbish came from.

Hello Laurent,

I'm so extremely happy with your post. I de-installed ZLauncher as well, nothing happened, still slow. I did a severe hard-reset, didn't install ZLauncher and had exactly the same feeling as you had: I'm owning a complete new LifeDrive. I even told my wife, who smiled and went on with reading the newspaper ;-)

Hi egidius,

I am glad that you experienced the same as me. It's been more than a week now, and it still feels great ;-)

My laptop is in the workshop for a while (screen failure), but I can do so much with my LD and the Palm Universal Wireless Keyboard that the loss is not that terrible. I said it before, and I say it again: The LD with a keyboard can be a replacement for many of the laptop's tasks.

Enjoy ;-)

Whoa it'a amazing how the thing is fast without all the crap we install on a day to day basis :D ...

Still installing stuff - so far so good :D

EDIT: So far the 1st noticeable slowdown is caused by Agendus 10.02. The device is still fast, but each application switch is not instantaneous.

EDIT2: 1st problem. Sync stalling on UninstallManagerData... Sucker :(
EDIT3: Whoa can't be good, Syncing always get stuck on something. I removed Uninstall and now i'm stuck on Wifile. It sucks  .
EDIT4: Removed wifile and it hangs on NetworkProfiles2...

Anyone got an idea? I'm on the edge of restarting everything!
EDIT5: Reinstalled the PC software and it solved the problem

Now i'm all done and guess what? It solved all my ptunes deluxe problems!! I can play with EQ on + CF 3secs + background (with minor skips) and it doesn't skip anymore. But songs aren't cached anymore (constant disk access).

Things that could have messed up my playback:
- Sharkcache
- Resco lock
- ZLauncher

Anyway I'm almost done reinstalling my essential software and it's all good now, with much less white screen lags.
