I'd like to be able to surf the web and check e-mail using my t68i as a wireless modem connected to my Earthlink ISP. I have Cingular as my mobile provider. I DO NOT subscribe to any sort of data services or GPRS. I just want to be able to dial in, via Bluetooth between my t68i and my TG50, to my Earthlink account and surf the web through that connection using my "regular" voice minutes (and unlimited nights/weekends).
So, my first question: Is this even possible?
And my second question: If it is possible, what settings am I supposed to use?
Here's what I've set up so far:
Under the "connect" menu of the t68i, I went to "data comm." I added a data account with the following settings:
Phone Number: a local access number for Earthlink (16504513500)
User ID: myaccountname@earthlink.com
Password: my account password
Password Request: On
Data rate: 28.8 kbits/s
Dial Type: Analogue
DNS address: 207.69.188.185
I've installed the t68i Bluetooth phone drivers onto the TG50 and can connect and send/receive SMS messages through the t68i to the TG50, so the connection between teh two should be okay.
My next step is to get Netfront onto my TG50, but I have to clear up some RAM to install it since I've read here that you need 6MB free for the install. But am I doing all this in vain? Will I even be able to do what I want? Thanks in advance!

Well, now I'm not sure if I have to set anything up on the phone...I found Netfront on my TG50 (duh, should have checked for it earlier!). So, under the Options-->Preferences menu, I put:
Service: Earthlink
User Name: myaccountname@mindspring.com
Password: Prompt for password
Connection: Selected "Sony BT to GSM"
Phone: 16504513500
Under the Details window, I put:
Connection type: PPP
Idle Timeout: 1 minute
Query DNS: checked
IP Address: checked (automatic)
I did not set up a log in script

When I have this setup. I hit the "connect" icon in Netfront. The TG50 connects with the t68i and the phone dials the number. But about 1-3 seconds after dialing the number it seems to hang up. It does this a couple of times, and then the TG50 reports "Error: no carrier (0x1102)" Any ideas on what could be wrong?

ok. i use my wap access number here in egypt to browse and collect mail.. via bluetooth . i dont find it that slow as i think the T68i has a 28kbps then again i am still using a dial up on my pc :-) i use clie mail and netfront and have had no problems so far ,
firstly i set up a connection to my T68i in "connections"
then set up as follows in "networks"
Service: (new (use drop down tab to select new),.... name it as you want)
connect to: modem
via: bluetooth
device: (your paired cell name after you tap to discover should appear)
dialling: touch tone
volume: low
in details tab
speed: 19,200 (or whatever your cell is capable of maximum)
flow control: auto
remember you need an init string for your particular cell phone
T68i is "ATZ"
User Name: only enter if you have to when you use wap
Password: " only enter if you have to when using wap"
Connection: use the new connection you just made
Phone: your wap service phone no mine is 2000
Under the Details window, I put:
Connection type: PPP
Idle Timeout: never
Query DNS: checked
IP Address: checked (automatic)
and there should be nothing in script
this works for me.. :-)

Thanks for the tips Caipro, but I'm not sure if WAP is what I need to set up. Is that the same as GPRS?

no.. it is access through normal GSM, i dont have GPRS access either this is why i use wap :-) i suppose it all depends whether your provider classes wap calls the same as voice to be able to use your free minutes tho.

You'll need at least one of the Wireless Internet Express options from Cingular. They used to offer a non-GPRS only plan (I believe it was called Data connect) but I'm not sure if they still do. If it is available it's 9.6k only and $.15/minute. It does not use your plan minutes. I don't recall the monthly fee but it was under $10.
You can also sign up for their GPRS plans which also allow you to place data calls on your plan minutes. It's still only 9.6k but I use it sometimes on evening and weekends to save my GPRS allotment.
Either way Cingular has to activate data calls before you can use them on your phone and it definitely will cost something in an additional monthly fee.

Yes, and europe.. Plans are priced, seeking maximum return for the investor--- that's all we really want, I suppose... Harvest the user, harvest, harvest, harvest.

Check these out for Cingular...

Can we do the $3.99 plan and get the data service activated, or do we _need_ to get the $6.99 Wireless Internet Express plan?
From what you're saying, we just need to get the cheapest, least "free" minute/data plan from Cingular and they'll open up the data service. Then, we could use our phones as dial-up modems and not use the Cingular-included data limit. Is this correct?
EDIT: Okay, answered my own question. I signed up for the $3.99 plan. Without changing any settings that I had ont eh t68i or the TG50, I now use the Clie to dial-in and everything works fine (albeit slow). So if you have Cingular, you need to get CSD activated. The only way I think you can do so is to sign up for the Wireless Internet ($3.99/month, uses your voice minutes) or Wireless Internet Express (starts at $6.99/month, doesn't use voice minutes; but if you do dial-up service it will use your voice minutes but not count toward your Wireless Internet Express data transfer).
