I'm somewhat doubting an upgrade for the NX. Besides Graffiti2, a key component is standardization for virtual graffiti. If they're not using Sony's API's, then a rewrite is in order, something that will be saved for new devices.

Graffiti 2 sounds interesting. But I've been a palm owner since the Palm Pilot 5000 almost six years ago. I'm not going to change the way I write graffiti.

Another bug of note they list is fixing formatting of external media over 128meg. Sony will probably have that portion included in the patch to make the NX compatible with MSPro.

Just my .02

What happened to OS5.1 so everyone can support the a proxyless browser and get higher encryption? I was told that they were putting OS5.1 in NZ90 and shipping the next batches of NX series with OS5.1. in Feb. hmmmm.

I read the OS5 and 5.1 were both released a while back and the the NX and Tungsten T both have parts of each OS. It was explained that 5.1 wasn't a traditional upgrade from 5.0.

If you read closely, that bug isn't all media, but only certain media.

If Sony did put part of OS5.1 into their devices, which parts? Cany anyone confirm the ability to use the new Palm Source Web Browser that supports proxyless servers and higher encryption.

Good question. Does anyone have a "good contact @ Sony"?

Basically OS 5.2 is a way to get rid of Grafitti and Replace it with Grafitti2.

See this thread http://www.cliesource.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=212

Palm is trying to escape the lawsuit by Xerox.

All I can say is THANK GOD Palm is stepping up and saying the VG area MUST BE CONTROLLED... too bad that $ony will probably never give us an updated OS for the NX...

Why is it such a love/hate relationship with sony?

Hey, I started out with PDA's on the Apple Newton 2000 which I upgraded to the Newton 2100 - and this was an awesome handwriting recognition device - however, now on my 4th palm OS (NX60 here) I absolutely love my graffiti and I am use to it - so I will pass on any upgrades that have to do with graffiti.

The changes made to Graffiti are very small. The biggest difference is how puncuation is handled, and it makes it a lot easier IMO. All but four letters are drawn exactly the same way, so I think that most people will get used to Graffiti 2 very quickly. So, I wouldn't upgrade just for the new writing system, and at the same time, I wouldn't avoid an upgrade for it either..

Couldn't agree more. Unfortunately, Palm has always been too conservative at stuff like this. There are three different APIs for jogwheels that I know of, and that's not counting Palm's official 5-Way Navigator API. There's two different HiRes APIs not counting the official HiDensity API.

All because Palm won't designate an API unless they have a reference implementation. Something in the back of my mind is saying that Palm must have a VG PDA coming out, but I doubt that they would have not announced it at CES if they did. Glad to see they're out of that rut.

Ah, I found the article that I was refering to. It's an interview of a guy from PalmSource that was on PalmInfocenter, he said:

Palm OS 5.0 and 5.1 were both completed in mid-2002, but it is sort of a complicated situation to explain. 5.1 wasn't the traditional bug-fix, incremental release that the version number would imply, and some "5.0" devices have some 5.1 materials. Also, version numbers can change at the last minute. Suffice it to say we work on several things all at the same time: smaller releases as well as big, and we're paying attention to what our Licensees need and when. -David Fedor, PalmSource
