View Full Version : Bluetooth Access via PC

This has been one of the more frustrating things I've ever done.  On my computer it hangs at the "signing on" prompt, eventually timing out.  On the laptop it connects, but then gives an error about a DNS lookup (which I read somewhere that I can fix by statically assigning an IP address to the TG instead of using DHCP).  My question is, what am I doing wrong on the PC?  Or on the laptop for that matter?  I followed a guide that was written for the Tungsten which didn't seem to work, and all the searching I've done was either geared toward the Tungsten or getting the Clie to work thru a cellphone.

I'm using the Belkin USB adapter and I have everything disabled except for Bluetooth Serial Port.

I am using a belkin bluetooth usb dongle (10m range) which is attached to a pc running win xp. My pc is attached via ethernet cable to a linksys wap for internet access. I have a sony clie tg50 which I have been able to access the internet with no software other than belkin's bt driver. Here is how:

1) I'm assuming that you have bluetooth enabled and have created a trust between the pc and your sony clie. Seeing how it is very easy, I will bypass this part.

2) On my pc, I went to network connections and highlighted the ethernet connection and the bt connection (Make sure Internet Sharing is enabled for the ethernet connection). I right-clicked and bridged the connections.

3) On my sony clie I opened netfront 3.0.

4) Using the preferences menu I made a new service titled BT Network. I left the username & pw blank.

5) For connection I clicked edit connections. I established a new connection which I named Bluetooth to a PC. Connect to: I selected Local Network. For Via: I selected Bluetooth. For Device: I selected the device which I had already establish a trust between, in this case My PC. (I didn't bother changing anything under Details... for this connection)

6) Click Ok and then Done until you get back to the Network Prefs screen. Click Details... Here are my network details. Connection type: PPP. Idle time: Never. Query DNS: is checked. IP Address: is check on Automatic. Click Script... Add a Prompt: and leave it blank. ( You should have Prompt and End). Click ok and ok.

7) Click connect and when it ask Prompt you for something leave it blank and click okay.

You should be able to browse now. I hope this works for you.

Thanks MR, but I am in a similar situation. I am using the Belkin Shark Fin Bluetooth Adapter as well...

I have no problems doing a wireless Bluetooth hotsync, but I cannot connect to the internet on my TG50 with bluetooth, I always get a PPP Timeout error: (0x1231)

Is this due to the fact that I have a router at home?
As for bridging the connections of my Local Area Connection with the Bluetooth connection, I can't seem to figure out this feature on my PC? This is probably due to the fact that I cannot enable Internet Sharing for the ethernet connection.

When I try to click the box for enabling Internet Sharing, a popup appears saying that sharing cannot be enabled. "A LAN connection is already configured with the IP address that is required for automatic IP addressing"

What does this mean? Someone please help me! What settings do I need to change or configure on my Win 2000 NT machine to be able to do BT wireless surfing.

Ok kids....

Here we go ....

With XP or 2000 it can be done fairly easily. Both have Internet Sharing built in... With 98 you'll need some extra software Sysgate, MocaPPP are two popular softwares. Both will enable you to re-direct the Com port connect to a IP.

With 2000 you enable the Internet Sharing on the network connection that extends out to the net. Then establish a "Guest" connection as a user with access to the necessary ports.

I'm having the same problem of timing out when i try and connect to the internet via netfront. I've done everything that MR said but still can't connect. The funny thing is that it worked pefectly fine for a couple weeks and now all I get are timouts. Hotsync is still ok however. Please help.

I had the same problem with it timing out initially. Here are some side notes which may help you out:

1) Make sure internet connection sharing is enabled for the LAN connection.

2) Make sure you bridged the connection between the ethernet adapter & bluetooth lan server (Under network connections).

3) Make sure that you have under Script... Prompt: & End: (Under Network Prefs)

**Personally, I have Send User ID: & End:**

&

**For my User Name: My Name**

xp will not bridge a shared connection.

do you have to have that annoying prompt?

Couldn't you just set the script to End
so that it bypasses the whole "Prompt"

BTW, I finally got everything working. I am using MocaPPP on my win2000 NT machine

Anyone know if I can do it without mochaPPP? and also can I use both bluetooth hotsync and mocha at the same time? It doesn't seem to let me.

As for bluetooth hotsync, I cannot get a full hotsync all the time, the connection seems to time out after a while... don't know why...

And I don't even have the option to turn on "Allow other network users..." check box because the whole internet sharing part is simply not there ;-( I 've got this checkbox under the bluetooth lan network profile but not in the advanced tab of my ethernet profile (on board lan)?!? Any ideas?

- Hotsync with BT works for me. But not internet!
- I can successfully bridge my BT with Ethernet. Internet Sharing is enabled.
- I set the Network Connection in my TG as MR mentioned above.
- I set the BT software only to serial port service with COM port 9 (same as my Hotsync BT COM port).
- I disabled the Network Access and Dialup Service.

But still got PPP timeout 0x1231
Please help! Thanks.

For WinXP/2000:

XP will NOT bridge a shared connection (why would you need to, it's shared already).

Bridging the BT dongle won't work with most adapters. You need to use Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) to share your net connection with the BT dongle.

You don't need to disable anything. If you disabled everything except serial, then you disabled your internet connectivity. The connection you want/need is the network connection (which you disabled).

Read the post at the bottom of the page in THIS (http://www.cliesource.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2609) thread (just ignore the part about installing the BT Memory Stick drivers if you are using a TG50 or NZ90). It explains what you need to do on the Clie side. You don't really need to do anything on the computer except ICS, so change everything back to the default settings before you start (all services on). Don't worry about all that paring and services stuff on the computer side. It's easier to set up if you start with the Clie.

For Win98:

ICS will work for 98 as well, but can be unreliable (you often have to try to connect more than once, but once connected it usually works well). For Win98 it's better to disable the Network and Dial-Up connections and use Mocha W32 PPP (http://www.mochasoft.dk/mppp.zip) for a serial connection. But this will limit you to only a single BT connection, and will make using both the Internet and Hotsync a little tricky (you need to make separate serial connections for each). Go to http://www.mochasoft.dk/palm.html for more info on Mocha.

Please help! I am unable to turn on the ICS. I got the following error message when I tried to enable ICS.

Internet Connection Sharing cannot be enabled due to an IP address conflict on the network. ICS requires the host be configured to use 192.168.0.1. Please ensure that no other client on the network is configured to use 192.168.0.1.

I'm running a WinXP computer where the USB bluetooth dogle is attached. This WinXP machine is connected to a router, which in turn connected to a DSL modem.

TIA.

Oh... 192.168.0.1 is my router IP address.

Don't know how to find out the conflicting clients.

GeekGod

You need to change your router's IP then. The router is the conflict.

What router is that BTW?

Maybe I am a dope, but how does MR get Netfront 3.0 running on a Clie when all I can see about it indicates it is for Pocket PC only ?

You cannot set up internet sharing if you are networking mulitiple computers via a router.  In order for a router to function properly without conflict, it disables internet sharing.  On my host computer I cannot even select the option for internet sharing.  The option has been removed by the router.  On my laptop connected via wireless card I cannot enable internet sharing because my internet access is obtained though the router.  Unless you really need a router (which now that I am understanding networking a little better I realize that with internet sharing I did not need one) you can plug your host computer directly into your modem and network your computers directly via ethernet cables or wireless 80211 with internet sharing enabled.  At this point you should be able to access the net with you BT dongle.  I hope I don't soud like I'm trying to be some network ace.  I'm not.  I've been dealing with the same issues and after a lot of research and time spent with tech support at microsoft and d-link I realized that I cannot enable internet sharing while using a router.  If anyone finds this to be in error (I hope you do) please let me know  thanks.

Hmm, I've been able to wirelessly surf and sync over BT in the past, but I've spent most of today trying to set up wireless BT surfing "correctly" (using the BT LAN Access network connection) and I've come to the conclusion that it's not going to work due to the setup of my LAN.

We've got a (small!) LAN here with two WinXP machines. My flatmates PC has the DSL connection and runs Internet Connection Sharing. My PC then uses his as the default gateway.

Now I've tried everything described in this thread (great thread by the way, lots of helpful ideas - thanks!), sharing the LAN connection, bridging the LAN and BT-LAN connections, and though I can always make a network connection from my NX70v to my PC, I can't get any traffic travelling across the link. I'm sort of assuming that because my PC isn't the default gateway, it's probably something to do with that, or some weird Windows ICS thing (you're not supposed to have 2 PCs on the same network running ICS, but it does work if you assign static IPs... anyway I'm getting off the point). Or both, who knows.

Anyway to get to my point, the easiest way I've found to surf and hotsync wirelessly over BT is to use this excellent walkthrough for the Palm Tungsten, but also applicable to BT Clies.

http://members.chello.se/micce/Bluetooth-Setup.pdf

The file there is version 1.0 - I'm pretty sure I've used a version 1.1 or higher before, but can't seems to find it today so maybe I imagined it....

Hope it helps some of you out, apologies if this file is widely known or something, but I haven't seen anyone else mention it.

Ok, it took me several days of frustration to get my setup to work.
After I did get it working I moved to a wifi setup so my hard work was in vain, but since I got it working, I'll share what I did.

My setup was a PC with WinXP with a router and I wanted to be able to use BT on the Clie to share the internet connection on my PC.

My router automatically takes the IP address 192.168.0.1 (pretty much all routers do this). Therefore the IP address of my PC is 192.168.0.100. This is all fine and dandy, only problem is if you try to enable ICS on your network connection, Windows will try to change your BT network connection IP address to 192.168.0.1 so that it can act as a router of sorts for BT devices wanting to share your PC's network connection. That's why you get the error stating that it cannot do this since the address is already assigned (the router).

To get around this, change router's address to 192.168.1.1 (every router is different, check your manual). you'll also have to change your PC's IP to reflect the change so make it 192.168.1.100 (consequently you'll also have to change the default gateway to be your router IP of 192.168.1.1). Now you can enable ICS which will make your BT network connection have an IP address be 192.168.0.1.

Once you have that working, go to your Clie. Time to fix the timeout problem. I'll assume you already have a BT setting under Connections and BT service defined under Network (both under Preferences). Go to the BT service you defined under Network and click "Details"

Under "Connection type" choose "PPP"

Under "Idle Timeout" chose "Never"

If you know your DNS servers, you should probably uncheck "Query DNS" and enter them manually.

Uncheck "Automatic" under "IP address" and enter in 192.168.0.100 as the IP address since the BT network connection your PC has the IP address of 192.168.0.1.

Voila! That should pretty much do it. You should now be able to connect to the shared connection on your PC. If you're still having problems, make sure you're not under a firewall of some kind. I had to define which IP addresses were ok to connect to my PC since I have a firewall running. Also, you may have to unpair your Clie and PC and delete the PC name on the Clie. Then repair. Sometimes that helps too.

Hope that helps! Good luck!
