Hi there - I have a heap of questions...

1.Hotsync w/o IPaddress
When doing a hot sync, I keep getting a message saying (system) backup failed because the computer doesn't have an IP-address. Annoying since I don't have an internet connection at home.... Is there any way to get around this?

2.GPRS-settings
I did download the phone link updater (or whatever) but naturally it doesn't support my carrier/network here in Finland. Hence LD uses the GSM phone's modem, which is slower and more expensive than GPRS. Is there any way to set up the connection to my GSM phone via GPRS manually?

3. Screen brightness
Is there any application to lower the screen brightness way lower than the minimum on the LifeDrive. I tried EnergyDimmer, but it doesn't go low enough (the 0% is too bright)?

TIA
June

pgenie - thanks! ....duh.... I should have known that one :-/

Does anyone know about configuring GPRS settings manually?

Are you trying to use your mobile's GPRS to access internet from your LD?

Yes, I was hoping to be able to browse the web on the LD using my mobile phone's GPRS service instead of the "dial up to ISP" (=modem, data transfer instead of GPRS).

The dial-up does work and I can connect the LD to the net, but I'd like the cheaper/faster GPRS... I understood (?) from Palm that the PhoneLinkUpdater installs the GPRS settings, but naturally my GSM-service provider wasn't supported. I have a compatible phone according to the Palm website.

Hi June,

You need to check that your GSM service provider also supports GPRS. Also, be careful with the assumption that GPRS is cheaper than GSM: GPRS is billed on a quantity-basis as opposed to GSM (time-basis). GPRS can get very expensive for big files, and it's sometimes better to use a GSM connection for this.

The best is to ask your provider directly for the GPRS settings. On my old Clié, I could give the "phone number" (it was actually a code telling the phone to use GPRS), username and password. With the new LD, however, it's not possible to use these "manual" settings (unless I missed something). On my LD, the connection happens using a script. If you want, contact me per private message and I'll send you a "printout" of the connection script.

HTH,
Laurent

I think there is a free app called BrightnessFix - try Google!

Thank you. Brightness Fix does dim the screen! Weird though that the darkest setting is about 1/3 up on the slider, and both ends are bright! Oh well, as long as it works... I assume there have been no issues/problems with this software? I find very little information/discussion about it on the web.

You are right about it being a strange slider (have you noticed yet that you can actually turn the screen light completely off if you fart around a bit?) Ive been using Brightness Fix for a few months. Love it! The trick to not getting a reset is to start the Brightness fix application and then go immediately to the Palm brightness control panel and adjust brightness from there (dont use the brightness slider or press 'ok' on the Brightness Fix screen itself). I use it for reading in bed while the ball and chain sleeps.

I've tried BrightnessFix and Dimmer 2.14, and suspected that they contributed to LD instability. I'll have to give your Brightness Fix procedure a try.
