I kinda wish that Palm would have rewritten the update procedure after the T5 issues that many had, but here is a nearly surefire way to not have an issue.
DO NOT sync over info from an older PDA
Do a final sync with teh old device to make sure everything is backed up
Move your username folder (C:\program files\palm or palmone\(your username) to another place - like the desktop
[If you use Palm Desktop for PIM, follow this part else move on: export each of the addressbok, calendar, tasks, memos, and notepad to their respective file types and save to your My Docs or similar folder]
UNinstall Palm Desktop
Reinstall Palm Desktop from the T5/Tx/LD/Treo 650/E2 CD
Sync your new device using your old user name
Open Palm Desktop and add back the info that you exported from the above step, orif you use OL, just sync
Open the old username folder that we moved in steo 3, go to the backup folder within there
For any applications (aka things that end with .prc NOT PDB), make sure that you check with PalmGear/Handango/FreewarePalm/etc for the latest versions of these program THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT
Install each program you found the update for one sync at a time (I know it takes time but you will bless me later)
From the backup folder, install one at a time the applications that you did not find an update for
Be happy, you will have a stable device until you find the program that breaks your PDA, but you will have a good backup from which to hard reset and reinstall from.
As for your old device, do a hard reset and give it a new user name. Keep it as a backup or donate it to Mobile Ministry Magazine so that we can give it to a church/mission that is in need of PDAs (ok shameless plug but ya et what I mean, give instead of collect dust).
I hope that helps, and Palm, I hope you rewrite the instructions.

Hey, Antoine, I just want to say that I appreciate the helpful, thoughtful, no-attitude information you contribute to this board week after week. With all the flaming and posturing going on, I know that we can always count on you to be steady and have the information.

A VERY IMPORTANT NOTE: (In case someone finds this and wants to apply the info to another, older model)
If your current version of Palm Desktop supports Contacts and Calendar (as opposed to Address Book and Date Book), you must export as an Address book archive instead of a Contacts archive file, if you want to import into an older version of Palm Desktop. Both are *.aba, and it will default to Contacts.
(The only time I ever had problems was when I was moving data from my Zire 71 to my TH55, and the Zire was running an updated version of Desktop. It took me forever to figure out why the TH55's Desktop wouldn't let me import.)

If you have an SD card and backup software, make a good backup copy of all your T|T stuff just in case!
