I'm going to Russia in a month or two and need a way to charge my SJ30 on the go. I will not have a car (that crosses out the car charger) or an outlet (that crosses out the stupid pieces of wire that came with my clie) I've heard about portable chargers where you can use AA batteries. Does anyone have any expierance with this kind of stuff. Any opinions, comment, or tips that could be helpful are greatly thanked.

I have a AA charger. It is great coupled with rechargable AA batteries:)It can use normal batteries and/or rechargable ones.

9 volt cversions:
www.shop.brando.com.hk
www.seidio.com

AA or AAA versions:
www.sonystyle.com
www.ebay.com

I got mine on eBay for about $10 shipped. It uses 4 AA's and charges the device up pretty fully in about 10 minutes. It seems to be good for a few 'hits.

9v units usually do not fully recharge the device, they mostly buy you time for a more complete charge. That said, the Brando unit is cheaper, smaller, and lighter than the Seidio but it does not have the charging light and you gotta use a new 9V- it only works once per battery. The Seidio might be more friendly.

The Sony AA charger is pretty dang expensive, and my ebay generic is sorta cheap feeling, but I am very happy with it.

You can get even more freedom from other power systems if you use rechargeable AA batteries and a solar recharging station! (Radio Shack, for example, has one- special order #980-0884, $29.99, but there are other versions out there as well.)

I'm with madkins...

I bought a no-name 4 AA recharger for 8.99 on ebay, and it hasn't let me down. I've found that for my T665, I get about 4 full charges out of one set of Energizer batteries (almost 4 anyways). It has a power switch as well. I can't see any reason why someone would want to pay the extra bucks for a Sony branded charger.

I'm also considering getting a "AA" battery charger. Can those who have/use them share about how many recharges you get. I realize this depends on how discharged the PDA is, but if someone can quantify the rechargability in some meaningful way, I would appreciate your experience!

I'm going on a 9-day backpacking trip and would like to do my daily Bible reading and listen to a little music from time to time on the hike!

wellsjs:

With my no-name charger, I get almost 4 full recharges out of one set of Energizer batteries. I guess mileage will differ with different brands of batteries, and rechargables.

If you'll be bringing along a laptop which you probably won't you could use this, or tap into someone else's desktop.

I use Olive Tree on my 615C.
Does it matter Batterywise if you read off the Memory Stick or should I move the text over to RAM?

I go on camping trips (Jeeping) and like carrying my clie for my Daily Verses and quiet time.

I know its slower when using the memory stick but that doesn't bother.
Battery time however can be an issue.

As Rick 098 mentioned, the same battery charger should work with any model that has the 'Clie' style connector.

The link that Woodchuck posted is identical to the one I bought off ebay for my T665. It should be good for NX/NZ Clies as well...

Yes. Reading the Memory Stick uses additional power, plus adds additional time to check there. If you have the room, at least switch the key books over to the RAM.

For those of you who are going to be away from auto or AC charging options, you can also consider using a solar system to recharge the batteries in your AA or AAA power packs.

I picked up an "ICP Global Technologies BatterySaver Powerpak #04041" that is pretty easy to carry and does everything from directly powering some items to trickle charging your car battery.

It has a multiple power jack adaptor, 4 AA charging stations and 4 AA storage compartments, a cigarette lighter plug (to charge the car) AND jack (to plug in auto chargers, like for a cell phone or PDA), selectable 6 or 12 volt output, an LED to indicate that you are getting maximum solar exposure, etc. I think it cost me about $40 at Radio Shack over the summer.

It takes about 3 hours of maximum sunlight to totally recharge a 500 milliamp battery. Since it produces a relatively 'soft' 140 milliamps per hour under good conditions, it should not damage even finicky and sensitive batteries.

Now if I can mount this to the back of my ScottEVest, I will have it made!

I hesitated to post a link since they no longer list the BatterySAVER PowerPac on the website, but ICP Global's home site is http://www.icpglobal.com/index.asp.

You can still get the PowerPac at Radio Shack's on-line catalog (www.radioshack.com, # 980-0692) for $40.

The ICP 'iSun' is a similar product without the built-in battery charging stations, etc. and is more compact. I noticed it was on sale for about the same price as the PowerPac at my local Shack.

As far as the ScottEVest goes, ICP DOES make some flexible panels!

Does anyone know the pinout for the T665C, i.e. just for power? It would seem easy to wire a 9-volt battery connector plug to the PDA connector. I have a spare cable I could sacrifice and wire-in the 9-volt connector if I knew the pinout or wire color codes for power to the battery.

I was going to do this for my Visor Prism, but a.) 9vdc batteries do not fully recharge these batteries (they only go to about 60-70%, and then only when brand new and only once per battery), and b.) by the time I bought the connector, I was able to buy a whole AA charger unit off eBay for only a couple bucks more.

Of course, you can get a 4AA battery holder at the Shack that uses a 9v-like connector.

Unfortunately, I've just tried to check the pins on my 4AA crecharger, and cannot figure out which combo is 'hot'. Part of it is the tiny pins and the big leads on my meter, part of it is that I am getting too tired to focus.

I'll try again later.

Just received my 4AA batter charger that I bought on eBay. $8 + $4 s/h. Works great. I'm playing with it/trying it out using rechargable AAs, but for my hiking trip I will load it with brand new top line regular AAs. ;)

sindu,

Weight is everything when backpacking! I plan to carry only one set (4) of AA batteries. I will limit my PDA use to daily Bible reading and a little music. Won't have any appointments to keep . . . except with God and His creation (nature)! :D

I had those battery charger for quiet a while...I use it because I listen to MP3 during flights. I did not pay attention to the charging cycle of a set of 4 batteries...but it seems to be that I use many battiries..

Anyone have experience/use rechargable batteries in these gadgets? I realize rechargables are not as hot/powerful as some of the latest "batteries on steroids!" :D So I'm sure they don't give as many recharges.

I have used rechargeables in mine, but I have not done a face-to-face comparison, so I don't have a good feel for their relative performances... but traditional rechargeables are counter-productive to the needs of people away from power, unless you bring a solar unit or something.

it DOES occur to me that it would be pretty easy to get one of the Brando 9v emergency charger cables or something and recharge directly off my solar unit, though. Hmmm, I wonder if I could adapt my AA unit to do that with? (it'd be cool to rig it so I can hook it up directly to my choice of either the PDA or the battery pack to recharge. Do the PDA when I'm not using it an a back-up set of batteries when I am away from the unit for whatever reason!)

I only use rechargeables in mine. Kinda like carrying around another rechargeable battery.
