My TH55 has the ability to decompress .zip files that I download on to the external memory. Is the Palm TX able to decompress .zip files?
Thanks,
David

There is a file manager app called UniCMD that can zip, unzip, and do alot of other stuff.

You can also check out Resco Explorer (http://www.resco.net/palm/explorer/default.asp) which supports the ZIP archive (besides a lot of other things).
Cheers.

Wouldn't want to put down RescoExplorer, as I have only heard good things about it, but UniCMD is absolutely free, and can do alot besides zipping. It can also encrypt, create and check MD5 checksums, and basically do just about everything. That said, RE has some pretty unique features, and if UniCMD doesnt do what you want, it is something to look at.

Thanks. I will be adding UniCMD to my TH55 regardless of what I decide about the TX. Do you know if the TX can do direct data import like the TH55? That is the other function that I would miss if I switched to the Palm TX.

The problem with UniCMD is the insane user interface. It is insanely difficult to use.
Use it for decompressing ZIP files and such stuff, but do not intend it as a replacement for FileZ!

Certainly, I have both. The TH file manager can unzip, but not zip.

From what I've read the T|X doesn't have a Drive mode.
However, there is a (fantastic) company called SoftTick who make a program called Card Export 2 which will give that feature to any PDA with a USB interface, and is currently the best program out there for it ;)
(Palm get last place for that feature, after Sony and SoftTick ;))
CardExport 2 has the advantage that it supports multiple VFS devices and has Linux and Win98 support.
Only downside is you have to pay for it :(
But it's worth it ;)

ZboxZ also supports zip and unzip (as well as tgz).

Really? That really sucks :(
Still, I'm sure they will adapt it for the T|X soon enough ;)

I suppose that this is the point in the discussion where I might apologize to Sony for all of the bad things that I have said about the TH55. On second thought, I don't think so. But, it is sad that I would need to buy third-party apps to do things on the TX that the TH55 does out of the box.

I have both a T5 and a TX. I really miss the Drive Mode on the TX. I tried Beaming the Drive Mode files over from the T5 but Drive Mode still will not run on the TX. I must have missed a related file. The two files I transferred over were DriveModeApp-PDM1 and DriveModeApp-PDM1-enUS. Any help from someone who got this app working on the TX would be greatly appreciated.

I transferred the following three files from my wife's T5 to my TX (no hotsync, I put them on my SD card via FileZ and then copied them to the RAM via RescoExplorer):
- DriveModeApp-PDM1.prc
- DriveModeApp-PDM1_enUS.prc
- DriveModeLib-PDM2.prc
That should do it.
Cheers.

Thanks much for the info. It was the DriveModeLib-PDM2.prc that I was missing. Works great now. I just do not understand why Palm did not include Drive Mode with the TX. It is a very handy feature to put MP3's, photos, and data files into the SD card.

Are you saying that with these files, you are able to use your TX as a usb mass storage device...or is there a desktop application necessary?

I use my T|E as a USB drive all the time with Card Export 2 and a Memory Card, it's actually my primary way of adding apps to my handheld. Hot-syncing is just too slow, but it has it's uses of course. Card Export has fixed any compatability issues with the TX so try the demo and see for yourself.
