This seems like a basic question, but I've never really gotten the whole story. I sense there is some hostility to the makers of Agendus, and what happened to me, if it's typical, may explain why.

I used to have Datebk 4 (or maybe an even earlier version), and then I got an e-mail, which I assumed was from the company that made Datebk, advising me of an upgrade to my program, but when I downloaded it it turned out that it was Agendus, not a new version of Datebk. (I could be wrong in my memory of what happened, because I'm reconstructing it from years ago.)

I like Agendus just fine, and I also liked Datebk just fine, but I got the impression that people thought the Agendus people were poaching on the Datebk people's territory, and that turned them off.

My questions are: 1. Is this a correct history from what other people know about it? I don't want to badmouth a company if they don't deserve it.

2. What do people think about the comparison between Datebk and Agendus?

3. Has Palm made their native calendar program nice enough in the TX that you might conclude you don't need an aftermarket calendar?

All politics aside. I prefer DateBk5 myself. I've tried Agendus on many occausions and it's never to my liking. I think it's just a personal thing. Either one is better than the default calendar that comes with your Palm device.

I love DateBk5 , the only issue I have is when using an icon set with 2000 icons, whenever I click on the down arrow for the icon pages past 14 - I get a reset. The same thing happened on my Treo650.

Does anyone know how to avoid this and "see" and use all the icons in larger files.

I'm a DateBk5 junky. I cut my teeth on a Handspring Neo with DateBk+. My pimary PIM needs revolve around scheduling. I don't know how an application can be built with more scheduling power than DateBk5.

Agendus definately has some great features with it. I bought Agendus to use with my Zod because of the email/sms application that came with it. I deleted DateBk5 so that I would force myself to learn and use Agendus only. After a week I had to reload DateBk5. My brain just clicks very well with the DatkBk5 interface. DateBk5 is built in a very tight and powerful format with at least 3 times the options available for scheduling than what Agendus offers. Moving from DateBk5 to Agendus was a huge downgrade for me in the scheduling world. To others I'm sure it's an upgrade so long as your scheduling needs aren't dependant on the missing options in Agendus. In other words, I'm sure not everyone needs as much power as DateBk5 offers in sheduling options.

The small screen of Palm devices demands a particular interface for me to be able to effectively work on the device. I do better with popups for small tid bits of data than I do with screen changes. DateBk5's use of popup's for multiple contacts associated with an event, for example, is much more effective for my thought process than what Agendus has to offer. The display options in DateBk5 though lacking in the photo background world (I could care less) are very powerful in icon size, font size, text color, text background color, etc. My options for display needs in DateBk5 are perfect. It was hard for to visually work with Agendus because the options in this area were not as robust. Agendus has options for these things, but not as many as DateBk and I'm a DateBk client that needs what's missing in Agendus.

Alarms was another area. DateBk5 has the most powerful alarm prefs I've ever seen. I use them and couldn't function well without them.

I think Agendus has a very broad client base, and I think that is because they have a very nice product. I view the two products as two tools for different job requirements. I need DateBk5 for the work that I do.

To be honest, the first time I tried datebook I didn't see what all the fuss was about. I went to Agendus and used that for a while. It was better than the Palm calendar but the application seems to be geared toward sales people and centers around contacts. After trying Datebk a second time, and fully reading the user manual this time, I found the calendar/schedule centric design of DateBk mroe fitting to my needs. Now, I can't live without it for managing by appointments, bills, birthdays and anniversaries. Templates and floating events made life a lot easier.

So my conclusion is that if you're PIM needs centers more around contacts (e.g. salesperson) then go with Agendus. If it's more around scheduling, then Datebk5 is better. Mind you, I do like the way Datebk5 handles linking to contacts. So you can still search all the events you've attended with person X or at Restaurant Y.
