I just switched over to a T|X after my Zire 72 was stolen. I had been doing some work with video using MMPlayer and encoding video using FairUse Wizard. Now that I have the T|X, I notice it has a media player for videos already installed. What are its strengths/limitations? What formats will it play?
Can anyone give me some comparison info between mmplayer and the Palm Media Player. Also, I just read about the TCPMP (The Core Pocket Media Player) and was wondering how it stacks up to the other two.

Skip the MMPlayer. The TCPMP player is far superior. Its only flaw being that it does not do co-operative multi-tasking (if you exit the program the music or video stops playing). I believe the built in Media player only plays "ASF" files which hardly anyone uses. The TCPMP player has plugins to play most anything and works great on the T|X with video. I tested it today at my local CompUSA. I wanted to make sure that it would play the video smoothly, and it worked flawlessly. I use PocketDVD to encode movies as MPEG4 AVI files. I also record TV shows on my PC using my ATI TV Tuner card in MPEG1 format and copy those to a 1GB SD card and then watch those on my T5 when I ride the bus to work. I hope this helps.
Palm's be with you.

Aspidoras:
I d/l'd TCPMP and will give it a try. MMPlayer does seem to crash from time to time, so I'd like to give another player a try. Do you need any other files to make this work?
Regarding Pocket DVD, have you tried any other products (such as FairUse Wizard) and how would you compare them? How long does it take to convert a 2-hour movie using Pocket DVD?
When you record the TV shows, do you use Pocket DVD to record them? Or something else? this is something I would be very interested in doing. I'm always seem to miss CSI and other shows when I want to watch them.
Thanks!

I had the MMPlayer also and I uninstalled it. The TCPMP player is much better and its FREE! You need the plugins for it which are included in the zipped download. MAinly the AC3, MP3, mpeg4, and mpeg1 plugins.
The latest version of PocketDVD is very easy to use and rips and encodes a 2 hour DVD into an mpeg4 AVI file in a short time. I have never used any other programs to encode movies. PocketDVD makes a DVD movie into a 200-500 megabyte mpeg4 avi file. Which you can watch on your PC (with Xvid installed) or transfer to an SD card and watch on the handheld.
I use the ATI TV tuner card on one of my PC's the other has an ATI All-In-Wonder video card with the TV tuner built-in. This device has a built in DVR function that you use to record TV. http://www.ati.com/products/multimedia.html
You still need to connect your card to either a TV antenna or a cable TV connection. But after that all you do is use the Gemstar software that comes with it to download your local program guide and then set it to record your favorites shows. Works almost as good as a TIVO :) I set the record mode to the lowest setting which records the show in MPEG1 (612meg per hour) and then copy that to a 1 gig SD card and watch it with TCPMP while riding the bus to work .

TCPMP is excellent and as far as I know the only media player that remebers where it left off if you exit the application. What this means is that I can listen to a podcast, stop it when I get to work and listen to the rest of it on my way home. I hated that mmplayer did not do that. I hated that Realplayer
(and Aeroplayer also) did not do that. TCPMP might not look real flashy, but my god it works so damn well.

Wow this worked great. I loaded up a full size DixV file onto an SD card as a test. It played it on my T|X without a glitch.

Bookmarking was cumbersome and I never got it to work. maybe its improverd, maybe i should have spent more time. I don't even need to do anything with TCPMP though, it has a perfect save state when I move to another application. Itsa just easier.

Yup. TCPMP is a good example of a well-written PalmOS program ;)
Treasure it, for there are too few of them these days...

Some Sony PDAs use a different sound system from normal Palms. If that is one of them, then you will need to get MCA from Cliepet's Page.
You can find it here (http://aibohack.com/clie/modclieaud.htm).

I downloaded TCPMP and I have not been able to view WMV files. Do I need to do something else?

PocketDVD when running in single pass mode runs at about 1X speed (maybe 0.8X? it may depend on quality settings) on my Pentium M 1.5ghz laptop, using xvid. It seems to be slower with divx, though (but it's been a while since I've tried divx), which is what US users who don't have an MPEG-4 patent license are stuck with. (I got myself an MPEG-4 patent license from MPEG LA. That's also how I manage to legally use TCPMP: I manufacture (i.e., compile) it for myself under my license, and the license is royalty-free for less than 100,000 copies.)

TCPMP will only play WMVs on a Windows Mobile device.
As for the Palm Media player, it doesn't only play ASF, it also plays plain MPEGs.

Can The WMV files that I have be converted to something that can be read on a Palm TX? What about other formats as well? :)

P.S. I usually encode to MP4 using Nero Recode. I wish fair use wizard 2 supported MP4 :(
