AcidImage and SplashPhoto will let you view them. Yes, they're both wonderful programs. The only advantage I think SplashPhoto has is their desktop app . . . makes it REAL easy to get photos resized, cleaned up and onto your PDA. (Acid Image CAN see SplashPhoto jpgs, BTW)
But by all means try them both!
HAVE FUN!

Does the SL/J series come with the JPEG Library files installed in ROM? If not, you may also need those to view jpgs.

Just use a file manager and elect to view both RAM and ROM and look for the following files:
JPEG Library
JPEG Util Library
If they aren't present, you probably need to install them. I can't tell you where to get them, unless they happen to be on your CD. They come installed in ROM on the NR series and some of the other Clies.
If you need them, check around, there was another thread about this where some one posted a link. Just not sure if the link is still there, since there may be a legal issue with sharing these files.
Another point: Jpg images can't be in RAM on your device, they have to be on MS. Jpg isn't a file type supported by the Palm OS.

JPEG images on the SJ series are slow because they don't have a hardware jpeg decoder. :(

JPEG images aren't unacceptably slow on my N610 and I'm sure it doen't have a hardware decoder. As a matter of fact all of the speed difference between it and my NR could be explained by the difference in processors 33mhz vs 66mhz. The huge savings in storage space makes it worth the short wait.

I use YiShow ( www.yibing.net , great HiRes Launcher) for viewing JPG files, it's the best I found (it's fast & it resizes the images very well). I transfer JPG files onto my Clie using CfZap ( http://www.mulliner.org/palm/cfzap.php ). It can receive any kind of files (you set what kinds to accept) and stores them into one folder on the MS.

I use Acid Image too, for opening hi-res images. okay, it's 1/10th faster than YiShow, but I like the way the picture previewer is integrated in YiShow.
Of course, for those who don't like the YiShow launcher, AcidImage is the best choice I think.
