Datacolor check

Let us take a look at this (http://www.datacolor.com/products_instruments_detail.jsp?id=64). I tried reading what it does but still have no clue. did anyone ever used it or can somebody let me know in simple terms what is it for?

It looks like it is a device to get data on color. I.e. like something an autobody shop would use for paint matching. That type of thing.
