View Full Version : Treo 650 as second PDA??

In a few days I will be receiving a Treo 650 but I intend to keep it as a second handheld (I am enjoying soo much of my LifeDrive) or even as a smartphone..
There are two facts that keep me away from using the Treo as main PDA: one is wifi and the second one is the screen (LD's is huge)
What do you think? Has anyone a Treo plus another Palm?

I've been a hardcore UX50 user for nearly two years and couldn't imagine life without the UX.
Since four weeks I own a Treo 650 and I've sold my UX two days ago.
I don't miss the WiFi at all. I've bought a GPRS bundle from Vodafone and now I can send/receive e-mail and search the Internet everywhere and not only on hotspots or at home.
See the various threads on this forum for an ode to the superb qualities of this very smart phone.

I own a Treo 650 and a Tungsten T3. I consider my T3 as my second PDA. The 650 really is a nice device. Although the T3's 320x480 screen is nicer when showing off vacation pictures.
After 2 weeks I kind of gave up on my TH and solely used the 650, it felt sad giving up on my TH. 1 month later, I started to reuse the TH. I actually use the WiFi, I like the big screen for reading, watching video, and playing games. The 650 is great and could be used alone but the TH, or in your case the LD, just does things better. Coming from a LD you will seriously be limited with the shortage of memory on a 650. I now use my 650 as mostly my phone and business usage PDA while using my TH as just my everyday enjoyment PDA. They are both now living harmoniously. I thought my PSP could replace my TH with video and games but... Their just different devices.

After just two days with my Treo 650, I gave my Clie NX70 to my husband. I will admit that the screen on the 650 could be bigger, but I love it so much, I completely abandoned my (previously beloved) NX70.....

I'm a hardcore UX user myself and I used the treo and hated it due to the keyboard. The thing I did not try which I realize now is using it one handed. I tried to use two hands on it. I think I could adapt to the keyboard but the screen's size for video is terrible. I actually saw a video on it with TCPMP and it was too small. Coming from a widescreen UX. I probably could adapt to a Treo but my school does not allow the use of phones during school hours so can't get one. It would be a waste.

I rather think that my use will be more like hope's one. Why? I cannot do without wifi. The point is that maybe a Treo as smartphone is quite a luxury..
On the other hand, I only carry myself the LifeDrive when going to work and during the weekend I leave it at home because it's quite bulky to carry it in the jeans.

Between my Treo650 and my Dell Axim x50v, the Treo is used 90% of the time and the Dell Axim for the occasional time wasting game and wifi (when there is a hotspot).
The Treo can stand on its own as a solid PDA - plus you get Phone plus ubquitous net access via GPRS/Edge

After I got the 270 that I have been using for weeks now..My treo 650 has been resting for days now ... In fact I did not want to get bored of the unit like it is happening to the Tungsten E. I rarely touch it..its really sad....
The 650 remains till date my 1st choice and let's wait an d see what the WM will be... In fact Im more excited to get a 650 of that kind...May be - we need changes :D

Another problem I will face is how to keep two Palms syncronized at a time.. I guess that will be quite messy

No- its not an issue! I sync more than 4 palms with the same Desktop and No issue - I just gave them different usernames, for example Tungsten C = TC , Treo 650 = T650 etc...

I see.. Do you have to specify which device to sync or is it automatic?
Thanks

It's automatic / it will search for the corresponding username once the hotsync process is launched. Now if you have performed a hard reset on any of the unit - then you will be asked to choose the desired hotsync name -

I like setting the usernames on my devices the same, so that when I buy an app, it can be installed on both. This also forces me to sync to different pc's, but since I have more computers than I do palm's, I'm all set.

I love my Treo so much that I don't think that I could have another PDA. The Treo is just that good for me. Of course it wouldn't hurt if Palm gave us an extra inch in screen space. However, my Treo does everything and more than my previous palms have done for me.

Like?
Apart from the buil-t in phone, there are many things that other palms can do even more than the treo.
Now it depends on the kind of palms you own before...Am I right?:D
Ooh, like your nike sign. Anyway, the treo is a solid stand alone PDA as well as a solid phone. The treo's connection allow it to have programs that run better or can only be runned because of it. But, have a larger screen and WiFi are basic necessities that were once believed absolutely necessary on a PDA. Since the 650, many of the users have made these specs to be useless or unneeded. It is all personal. Yes, you could use the 650 by itself and have 1 device. But, many users like myself and JA use WiFi and want/ need a larger screen for video or reading or anything else. The LD could be used very successfuly with the 650, as would a TX, TH, or UX. The 650 could also stand alone. Just figure out your needs and use accordingly. I would personally use the LD as a video, WiFi, and game device as it would do well with the built in HD and be better at it than the 650. But the 650 can always go on the internet and depending on your preference is good at games and video as well. I just like the larger screen.

I'd love to replace my T|3 with the TX, but since I also own the 650, I can't justify it. The $299 pricetag is sweet though. Maybe for christmas.....
But then I would have to replace all my accessories: Piel Frama Leather case, 2 cradles, pdapanache custom stylus (http://www.pdapanache.com), probably another sd card. I'm in for trouble. wifi would be nice though....

Wise advices. Thanks.
I guess I won't get rid of the LifeDrive because I just love it (screen and wifi). I will keep the Treo as an "always-with-me" device and LifeDrive for monday-friday and at home (wifi) :)

I played with the TX @ CompUSA the other day, wow what a great succesor to the TH55 ... Minus the camera, it was very fast and worked great with the in house wifi. Had I not purchased the Treo 650, this would have been a great alternative. The only thing I didn't like about it was the plastic shell, but everything else was great.
Yeah, I had a post in the TH forum about that. It's finally nice to see a somewhat comparable PDA to the TH so if the worse would happen. I hope I can stick with Sony for a long time but, sooner or later I'm probably going to have to be all Palm since I will never go to the dark side. Using my Treo and TH has been getting better and better lately and I probably will make a post on it as I know I always had questions on using 2 PDA's that no one ever answered so there are probably a couple of guys out there wondering the same thing.

Could not have said it better meself. Would I change a few things? Sure, just like with the UX-50. I have yet to see a perfect unit but for me, the Treo (and all of the cool software that is available for it) comes pretty damn close.

Well, after four days of use I can tell you that I love the Treo, but I will use it during weekends and for leisure.
I also love LifeDrive and need the wifi, so it will remain as my main Palm.
