Jeff, the quality was never bad, except the time you went on vacation and the cast could not play on CLIEs.
As for the TX, I've decided just to keep my UX for I've been getting better results from it after installing PalmInternals (http://www.freewarepalm.com/clock/palminternals.shtml). Also, I got my WiFi working (http://www.1src.com/forums/showthread.php?t=98505) now. Also, I feel the need to save my money for a keyboard device. I've passed my phase of accepting non-keyboard devices. The hype kinda caught me but I've regained my common sense and real personal liking. I just purchased another battery for my UX. So, I'll be fine. I might change my mind again but I doubt it.
BTW, don't you notice that a lot of devices are making their devices darker or black versions of their devices. Once the PSP came out, the black Zaurus C1000 and C3100, then black iPod Nano, now TX and the iPod Video.

Hmm, why didn't you mention the iPod video Jeff. I find it to be cool in concept for its size but yet the screen is too small for video, in my opinion. You Treo people might disagree but I find it too small.

Screen size is of no issue now. As long as you see the need for something, you'd not mind the screen size for any gadget. Take a look at the GameBoy micro and the iPod nano. People thought the screen was small but once they tried it, the devices were instant hits. :)

I have to say that the Z22 really does look good. I wish they had as good as a design for the TX as well, in black >.<. Great job with the podcast, the audio was very good :). Darn it >_< I should have applied for that beta testing, I didn't know it was going to be THAT kind of program! Can't wait for the weekend now.

I TOTALY AGREE. I would have had to get the TX if it had the Z22 casing (filling up most of the face with screen, that is). Black would have made it look like the black nano (the most gorgeous mp3 device yet made). :p

Jeff,
If you haven't already read (or listened to) Jaclyn Easton's book Going Wireless (http://www.goingwirelessbook.com/), she touches on a lot of the points you talked about in the podcast when discussing Palm's next big thing.
In particular, check out the chapter The Death of Cash (and Waiting in Line) (http://www.goingwirelessbook.com/chap_deathofcash.html) and the section Payment via Palm, Cell or Thumbprint. It's a great book that will prepare the reader for what we could expect from Palm & Jeff Hawkins. I listened to the Audible.com version about 2 1/2 years ago and I highly recommend it, especially to anyone interested in handheld computing. I think it's time to listen again as a refresher ;).
To anyone who is going to get the Audible.com version, make sure you get the unabridged version.

Jeff, you are hanging one huge expectation on Palm.
I can afford to sit back and watch while I don't have any money in their stuff.
I will give it to Palm in that they have created devices that are more interesting to me and give a pretty wide array of choices at the moment too.
Of course the real world reports aren't in yet on the newcomers, but we'll see.
TX: It's a great chance for folks who missed out on getting a Clie PEG-TH55 to get some of the goodness. Not all, but some.
At least the TX isn't Memory Shtick-bound. revel in that. For some of us it might be a slow extraction process. :(
I would be very suprised to see the TX come close to the battery life of the TH55 when the hard numbers come in however.
If I didn't already own my TH, this would be great.
The time frame is responsible for it costing less as well.
This will be GREAT for alot of folks, just not for me. I want something more and/or different. Maybe a Treo, maybe something else.
Z22: Why is this one interesting to me? The simplicity? The design? The potential "robustitude"?
This thing kinda recaptures the Zen a little, doesn't it?
Can you put G1 on it I wonder?
Tyler's trademark is doing things that haven't been done.
It's that simple.

First of all, 90% of the released 1src podcasts are in very good sound quality, just try other geek podcasts and you'll know what I mean :)
Avvenu is really a good thing in concept, and I tend to think that this is what makes the TX really shine. (At first, I thought that this might be palm's 3rd big business, and then realized that Palm doesn't own it :P) One thing I'd like to mention is that I'd like a real software interface instead of a webpage(which takes more time to load all the UI elements). I'd like it much more if it was more like WiFile.
Looks like Palm is back to the days when most of their products look very cool. The Z22 is beautiful not because it has the same color as the iPod (Apple doesn't own that color, just as Sony doesn't own the color black; heck the original Zire was white, too) but the LD form factor. Although it is "just" a plain organiser, I still feel that it's something nice to have, kinda like a gimmick. As for the TX, it's got the right color! Never though that this recycled TE look could look so good. They've got 2 promissing products now, and I really think that they both would sell like hot cakes.
But, as a geek, here's the intresting part: I like the Z22 over the TX. Anyone having the same feeling here? The Z22 is cute, small and so simple. And since it only organises, maybe you have less distractions and will be more productive. As for the TX, yeah it looks good, yeah it has WiFi. But I just take a look at my Clie TH55, and I thought:"What the hell, the TH55 does much more, and I already have it..." But for new TX owners: welcome to the mobile connected world that we Clie users had taken granted for so long.

I noticed palm did remove the T5 and Z72 from one handheld page but there are others on the site that still have them. I do think they will be discontinued very soon though. Part of me wants to sell my T5 but, I don't need wi-fi, nor do I want to give up the memory. Pocket tunes would be nice though. ;)

Good cast Jeff. I'm absolutely with you on small thinking about the future of portable computing. Keep on ranting.
I'm also getting weary of all the negativity about the customer support call/return-exchange provoking discontinued features. It's pretty obvious to me that these features have a correlated post ratio on forums.
I'm no audio engineer, but have you asked some of the other PalmCasters (Lance and Carl immediately come to mind) about their setups? They might know a trick or two.

I saw a post somewhere else about a customer ordering the the TX and stating they were going to return it if they couldn't get Graffiti 1 to work on it. Huh?! I thought we got over this issue. Returning a device because you can't hack Graffiti 1 on to the device is, in my opinion, really small thinking. At first I didn't want to go over to Graffiti 2, but after a week of honest effort to use G2, things are fine. (Yes, I think the L + Space = T is a bit annoying at times, but in the grand scheme of things, not much of a problem.)

I just saw over at the Treocentral forums Tyler had asked people to beta test ShrkMsg, I am so jealous that I missed it:) I sent him an email hoping to get in on it, and am looking forward to the official release this weekend. I know Palm has heard about this new app from the person that practically saved the lifedrive, and am glad Windows Mobile people get to see how great the Palm community is. How awesome is it that the feature they said Palm couldn't do, gets done by Tyler? Awesome job!!
What's pen input? Can I do that on my Treo?:) kidding
I was also one of those graffiti 1 people, but when I had a lifedrive I used graffiti 2 and got used to it fast. It makes graffiti so much easier for commoners, I am probably still faster with graffiti 1.Palm is not trying to make it easier for me, it's better to make it easy for a wider audience, and so many people I know stayed away from a Palm because of the weird alphabet, graffiti 2 is more natural for them. You can master graffiti2, just like Alan just give it a few days.

Decuma is so much better :) Its like writing naturally, and not just one letter at a time, whole words too :D. I'm so spoiled by this on the TH I have to get it for the TX >_<, never did like Graffiti. My way is keyboard or decuma, nothing else :D.

From what I remember it's kind of like transcriber, or calligrapher (pocket pc) where you can write in your own hand writing full words, not just letter at a time. It never took off for me, I preferred graffiti. When I had ipaqs I always used block recognizer (graffiti 1). Now with my Treo there is not really a point to do pen input:)

Just noticed the T|X is only UKP215 at Expansys - that is a fantastic launch price. I suspect it will move to UKP199 in a few months. This is fanstastic news for Palm in the UK as even the Clie TH55 @ UKP260 1.5 years ago was considered good value. Great strategy Palm, good way to get brand identity! ;)

There's a great article about "remote controls" for your life at MSNBC.com here (http://msnbc.msn.com/id/9371598/):
"Smart" handsets are already being used by busy executives to retrieve important documents from office computers halfway across the globe. They're handling e-mail, programming set-top boxes and keeping an eye on the home surveillance system.

Fey Jeff! A TRUE Maximum Geek would have replaced the motherboard! Without a screwdriver. In the snow. Blindfolded. THen you would have replaced the DVD drive. THen upgraded the memory. THen got a new vid card. Finally you would have gotten a SATA HD. Of course you would have spent twice the money. But it would have been more geeky! Now Josh will have to deny knowing you. <G>
As your penance, you have to buy a TX, write a review and think nice thoughts about VoR for 30, nah 10 minutes. After all, it was not like you killed anybody.<G>
On the podcast. I am not sure that you are right on the bucks with this. If you are its something that Bill (Frigging) Gates talked about in ON THE ROAD AHEAD. I recall a video clip in which everyone had PDA type things that acted as a wallet for cashless trasactions, workstations in a school and voice recorder/transcribers. This was 1998 or so. What I am saying is that a person's cell phone is more likely to have that fucntion than even a Treo type phone. More cellphones out there than smartphones.
We live in intersting times.

I can't help but keep looking at the TX, I am going to see if any compusa's in my area have any in stock yet. Any idea if Sharkmsg will be released tomorrow, sat, or sun? If you couldn't tell I am wanting it,lol. I don't like to wait. Justifying replacing a pda thats less than a year old? My longest device is my Treo 650, had it 9 months. In that time I've also had a t3, t5, lifedrive. The t5 and Lifedrive were purchased after the 650, I ebayed the t5, and returned the Lifedrive. Palm has some kind of power over me, ok not really, I just love new devices.

Ok, I caved in:) I just got back from bestbuy and got a TX. I will be publishing a full review with pics on my site. A few things the processor is fast, even though it's not the 416 mhz like the t5 and lifedrive it is fast. Palm has seemed to finally release a pda were not beta testing for them, no bugs that I have seen yet, like no resets, seems to be stable. I like the black casing, very cool looking. I will do a full review with pics and everything. I knew I was going to end up getting it, for 299 having wifi/bt, a thin pda is great. It will not replace my Treo 650, it will compliment it:)
