I like this unit. In fact, I like it better than the TX, design wise. At $99, I feel this will outsell most other Palm products. Eventhough, it does not have an expansion slot, the 24.6MB is more than enough for most people and with many people having an ipod, the lack of music capability is not much of an issue.
If only it has a high-res screen, I might even downgrade all the way from my current T5 to the Z22, but as it is I need the hi-res screen...

It look like it does not sync with Outlook on its own - you need additional software? Synchronizes to her Outlook calendar (sold separately) to see both her office and home schedules for the day
I like the style in which the Z22 is presented on the website.
- update -
It syncs with Outlook, but you have to buy Outlook seperately (doh).

You can just tell that the Z22 was created to take advantage of the holiday season. As the brochure (http://www.palm.com/us/products/handhelds/z22/pdf/datasheet_Palm-Z22.pdf) says, it's "specifically for people who haven’t seen what a handheld organizer can do".
What a great gift idea! :D

Shame that all the promo material is geared for women users. I really want to do an Ahnuld girlie-man rant now.

Well I as a Lifedrive user could easily be tempted to buy me a rock solid and responsive Z22 to make use of it whenever I needed to access some info quick at school or when dealing with people.

A version in black would bring it in line with current fashion.
For a basic PDA it looks quite adequate.

The long battery life time may also make it attractive for some companies... .

But most of all, it is cheap. You can easily 'try' a PDA without spending hundreds of dollars.

Could somebody please go to a store, hard-reset a Z22 and tell me what idioms does it support?
Does it support Portuguese (pt-BR)? I'd like to buy one for my mom but she can only speak Portuguese.

I haven't been able to find one in a store. I'm probably going to have to order it online.

I think that the European version sure will. Maybe you want to import it.

I really like this unit too.
In another year we'll maybe have 320 x 320 and an SD card slot to boot. Then you'll really have something pretty cool for $99...

Hehehehe, I am already importing it. I live in Brazil! :)
But it seems Palm hasn't planned on an european version yet...

The version that I reviewed was EFIGS and so that might answer the pending question.

That would be the T|E2. By the time you get a 320x320 with SD card for $99, we will all have VGA screens, dual wireless and 60GB storage.

Antoine, could you elaborate a little more? Confirm to me, please:
EFIGS = English, French, Italian, German, Spanish
BEFIGS = Brazilian Portuguese, English, French, Italian, German, Spanish
When some devices started to ship BEFIGS (e.g. T|X), I thought Palm had recognized pt-BR and all future projects would be this way.
Could you explain to me why don't they? :(
BTW, I know it is OFF-TOPIC, but are all Zire72s on US BEFIGS? I mean, a Zire-72s bought on the Net and shipped within US is BEFIGS or EFIGS?
If I can't buy a Z22 to my mom, I'm thinking of a Z-72s... (*sigh*)

I would need to do a hard reset to see if Brazilian Portugese is there, only did one hard reset and it took as long as my T5 does to come back (weird). Give me a day or two and I shuld be able to find that out for you.
Dont know about all Z72s being BEFIGS, but its certainley a good question.

I think that this will be a good thing for palm, I still see lot's of zire's everywhere, a very popular product for them. At $99 you really can't go wrong, especially if you are looking to get that daytimer co-worker a modernized gift.

I see the Z22 also from another point of view. At the moment I'm having a hard time with my lifedrive and I can't really find the error in my installation, so I'm a little tempted to go back to the roots of handheld computing - just keep your life organized. Do we really all need all the extra features? I think I'm using them just because I have them and not because I would really need them (ok sometimes I really do need wifi or BT).
Th Z22 may become my everyday organizer.
Antoine

You woud be better with the E2 Maticek; the 22 would be too basic for you and you woudl easily miss the sharper screen (I reviewed the E2 and the battery life is great tehre, though it does have that Find Bug that was on the T5 before the Version 1.1 patch).

I know that I would. But at the moment, I'm out of money and Z22 comes handy at just $99. Well if I decide to buy anything, I'll try to find something on the ebay.

I'm getting the z22 because it only has what I would need on it. For years I had been dumping money into pdas that had things on them that I never used. I would upgrade just have the newest pda but when I realized how much money I was wasting, it made me sick. I was thinking of getting the zire 31 when news of this one came about. I just ordered the z22 from the palm website and i am confidant that it will meet all my needs. i have no use for wifi or bluetooth. I don't need the best color screen. As long as its color, thats all i care about. I just need to have somewhere to keep track of my schedule, contacts, school homework and my bank info.

I guess this could help Palm. But some people have trouble working a cell phone (my mom) and can't even PRINT from a computer. How could they learn how to sync and all? Would they go for it? They have to start somewhere :p
This could help Palm, or hurt Palm, or do nothing. I will go with do nothing :D

Most of the Multilingual Units in US will be EFIGS... one more thing you can do may be to request for BEFIGS or ROW (rest of the world). That will do the trick. ;)

Hey! I live in Brazil. My in-laws are going to US soon, not me. I intend to order both palms on Palm's website and to be delivered at their hotel.
So, I have to be sure both will have BEFIGS. But all the e-mails I sent to Palm were automatically responded... :(
Would any of you mind to phone Palm's 0800 and ask? Please... ;)

I would only do that if they were going to be at that hotel for a week or more, and I would make sure the shipping was overnight too. Pretty difficult to organize. Eu espero que trabalhe para voce,

Thanks Brad! I didn't write the whole story because of my poor English.
I'm sending the palms to my father-in-law's brother's (uncle-in-law?) house, in Seattle. When my father-in-law visit him (about Oct, 24th), he'll get them and bring them here. Ok?
Anyhow, if any of you could confirm the BEFIGS on the palms, I'd appreciate, since from here Palm's toll-free is international call (1-800-881-7256).
BTW, thanks for your wishes! Nice Portuguese! :D
- "I hope this works for you" = "Eu espero que funcione para você"
- "We're always glad to help!" = "Nós ficamos felizes em ajudar"
Very good indeed! Probably better than my English! :) Thanks once again!

Your english is fine. The portuguese is actually google translated, but I look it over before posting it, because I have a strong background in french, a little spanish, and alot of latin, so I can pretty easily translate from Portuguese, and I know enough to make sure when Google translates it it is doing it correctly (spending a week in Brazil doesnt hurt, I learned alot. I actually ordered a meal in Portuguese before the week was over). Portuguese is one of those languages that the Google translator gets perfectly, so you cant tell the difference. I think I can actually translate from it a little easier than spanish. Like I said, your english is fine. If I were to try to translate myself, I would have gotten as far as "Eu espero que".
BTW, if you see my writing French, then it is mostly me, and maybe google used just to check it.

Good Evening-
I just handled one of these at a local CompUSA. First impression was "How cute". Second impression was "How Small". Third impression was "What's wrong with the screen", then I remembered it was 160x160. The screen really looks grainy having used HiRes screens for a few years now (thank you Sony). It is very pocketable, and has a more consumer electronics feel to it then a full-on Palm.
I would buy one if they would add one thing, something that they (Palm) would never add, but if they added support for Microsoft's SPOT, I would buy this. I like SPOT, but as I am an avid watch collector, I am not going to take up precious arm space with an ugly digital watch. If there was a small device that could call in the SPOT signals though, I would be very much interested. I even thought of buying a SPOT watch and then just removing the bands (I may still do that). But if a cute color screened Palm device, like this Z22 had SPOT, I would pay $120 to even $150 for it.
Thoughts anyone?

That's right. As long as they offer Portuguese is a great advance! :D
I mean, of course I prefer Brazilian Portuguese, but there are not too many changes. For example:
Files - Ficheiros (pt-PT) - Arquivos (pt-BR)
Screen - Ecrã (pt-PT) - Tela or Vídeo or Monitor (pt-BR)
Saving - A salvar (pt-PT) - Salvando (pt-BR)
Loading - A carregar (pt-PT) - Carregando (pt-BR)
Formatting - A formatar (pt-PT) - Formatando (pt-BR)
Printing - A imprimir (pt-PT) - Imprimindo (pt-BR)
The greater difference in how they use verbs (especially present continuous). :D
Thanks for your help, anyway! ;)

I haven't used a PDA in a little while, but I am tempted by this little gem. I wish the TX was as outwardly desirable (not that I would really need one.) It will probably be available for even less on sale.
Too bad no card slot, but at least it has a decent amount of memory for iSilo files, etc...

Yikes, and here someone got to the answer before me. Potugese but not the Brazilian variety is here.
Want to warn folks that have expectations of any kind, think of the Z22 as a zire 21 with color. Its not quite as good as the 31 in some applicaations, but not nearly as basic as the 21.

Thanks Antoine!
Risking to be inconvenient, I'd like to ask another favor: could you check the Zire 72 Silver? Even if you don't have a Zire 72 Silver, could you please ask this favor to one who has or try to do it in a shop?
Let me explain why: I chose these two palms as suitable to my mother's needs. But, since she only speaks Portguese, I have to know for sure if her palm offers it.
Thanks in advance! :)
