I took off that battery door and it seems all someone would need to do to replace the battery is slide it out and slide the new one in. The cord for power is very standard, all sony batteries have it.

Is the battery readily avaliable on the market?

This site sells a lot of handheld batteries:

but I don't see the TG50 listed.

You can find the model number of the battery and call sony for a replacement. THEY don't have to know it is for your clie! ;)

I think this is a good move from Sony that batteries are user replaceable. Batteries life is increasingly an issue for the handhelds and the manufacturers have to do something about it.

Maybe it would eventually come out

I've noticed the same thing - the door and battery being removable and wondered the same..
This may be ignorance on my part, but if you removed the battery, wouldn't you lose your data? Is it the same thing as discharging the battery?

Let's not forget, the fact that you physically can switch out the battery isn't the same thing as handhelds that have been designed for it, like the NZ90. As ArmsTom points out, I seriously doubt the TG50 has a backup battery to power it while the regular battery has been removed. If this is true, disconnecting the battery would do the same thing as a hard reset. I think you'd have to be pretty desperate for more power to put up with restoring everything from backup every time you switched batteries.
Just buy an adapter that will let you charge your TG50 from external batteries and move on.

Sony has put this door here because you are supposed to take out the battery and recycle it before you throw your unit away. I remember reading that in the manual for my NR70V, and it says the same thing for my NX70V.

Ed? You don't know what replacing the battery means? I can't believe it!
Replacing means you throw away the old one because it wont hold a charge. Swapping is what the NZ90 does, you can switch batteries when one runs out, but you certainly don't throw it away!
