View Full Version : My settings for connecting to Internet using GPRS

Since the Sticky Help thread is gone...
I'm using a T615 to connect to the Internet using my T68i's GPRS
connection. Here it is in short (I use Cingular in the Bay Area, so YMMV):
On the T68i:
Menu --> Connect -- > Data Comm. --> Data Accounts
- Add Account
- Select GPRS DATA
- Name: call it whatever you like.
- APN: ISP.CINGULAR
- Username: WIXDC001@W5.MYCINGULAR.COM (case-sensitive)
- Password: ZXY203DC9K0402
- Password.request: "off"
- Allow calls: "Automatic"
- IP Address: Leave default
- DNS Address: Leave default
- Advan.Settings: Leave default
Now go back and edit the account you just created and note
the CID=#. The number will be the Connection ID you'll use
later on the Palm. On mine CID is 3.
In Palm Preferences--> Connections:
- Create a new connection
- Use whatever name you want, I called mine "CingularGPRS"
- Connect to: "Modem"
- Via: "Infrared" (this is why I wish Sony had a Bluetooth
enabled Clie"
- Dialing: "Touch Tone"
- Volume: "low"
- In the Details section:
- Speed: "57600" (any faster and it wouldn't authenticate"
- Flow Ctl: "Automatic"
- Init String: ATZ (I don't think this is necessary but...)
In Palm Preferences--> Network:
- Select Service: "Windows RAS"
- Username: WIXDC001@W5.MYCINGULAR.COM (case sensitive)
- Password: ZXY203DC9K0402
- Connection: use the one you just created above.
- Phone Number: *99***3# (this is the CID from above)
- In Details:
- connection type: "PPP"
- idle timeout: "never"
- query DNS: box checked
- IP address: box checked (Automatic)
Now grab a browser and you should be able to connect.

AT&T M-Mode GPRS is even easier:
On the T68i:
-- Nothing to do on the T68i.
In Palm Preferences--> Connections:
- Create a new connection
- Use whatever name you want, I called mine "ATTGPRS"
- Connect to: "Modem"
- Via: "Infrared"
- Dialing: "Touch Tone"
- Volume: "low"
- In the Details section:
- Speed: "115000" (faster works with AT&T, but not Cingular)
- Flow Ctl: "Automatic"
- Init String: ATZ
In Palm Preferences--> Network:
- Select Service: "Windows RAS"
- Username: BLANK
- Password: BLANK
- Connection: use the one you just created above.
- Phone Number: *99***1#
- In Details:
- connection type: "PPP"
- idle timeout: "never"
- query DNS: box checked
- IP address: box checked (Automatic)
Now grab a browser and you should be able to connect.

This information is very helpful. Thanks Blastradius!
I'm using T-Mobile and haven't figured out what the settings are yet, but this at least provides a roadmap of what to look for. If, by the way, anyone does know what those settings are, I would be very grateful if you posted them. TIA

Tried connecting the Palm to the handphone via Bluetooth?
I am using a T665 and a Nokia 7650. Manage to establish connection to my mobile service provider GPRS through Sony's Bluetooth module. But any data transfers cuts off the connection.
I hv no problem if the connection between Palm and mobile phone is Infrared.
Any suggestions?

Hi blastradius,
How about the setup for Cingular GSM data ? (other than GPRS) ?
I have difficulties in connecting to internet through T68i (IR)
with my NX70V.
I have tried WAP set up too and still no success.

i had to use "*98*<cid>#" as phone number (using a T68 on swisscoms gprs net) to get a connection.

GSM data? You mean Circuit Switched Data? Surprisingly Cingular still supports CSD. CSD is basically using the wireless equivalent of a "dedicated circuit" for your data call. In essence, you use an IR/Bluetooth/Serial connection to connect to your T68i and dial the "modem" built into the phone (using AT commands even). If you "off hook" the phone modem, you'll even get a dial tone. It's very inefficient use of the cellular network and the maximum speed is rarely more than 9600 bps.
CSD is OK in a pinch but you'll get better speed from GPRS.
BTW, GPRS is the data service of GSM carriers. You can't get GPRS without GSM.
My AT&T M-Mode (GPRS) service doesn't even offer CSD.

I hope you guys are aware... or for those on ATT networks. you are charged by the kb... I signed up for the $7.99 w/ 1mb i loaded just only 1 webpage using the sony clie using xiino, and i racked up 11785 kb i was charged .03 for each additional kb that i went over...
If any of you know how to connect to the internet via wasting your airtime and minutes instead of per as it is set up per/kb please let me know...
Just to let you all know also... in that one webpage I am liable for the $10x.xx charge that I was over... =(

I am agreeing with the last post, i have the 1 mb plan and can do barely anything. I have free nights and weekends and it would benefit me alot to be charged by the minute.

I was thinking of getting the SonyErricson T68i and using a BT MS to get internet. From what I have read here and elsewhere I am not sure it will work.
Well, at least without signing up for the mMode service (via ATT) in addtion to my calling plan. Using the hardware...

Isn't is possible to simply dial into an existing (AOL, WorldNet, Juno, etc.) dial up account and connect to the internet in this fashion. Thus avoiding the mMode, per kb service and it's heaft price tag?? Or am I way off here?

A number of people at Orange UK (European Cell Network) have told me that you cannot use AOL on your PDA to access email etc.(it doesn't conform to POP3 standard). I hope this is of help, because you can…
I’m using a Sony Ericsson T68i with a gunmetal Clie NX70V/U - bought in the US. Here are my FULL phone and Clie settings and I have no problems.
Ensure GPRS is activated on your phone.
Phone settings
Connect Using: select Orange GPRS Internet
Protocol: Pop3
Incoming Server: pop.orange.net
Incoming Port: 110
Mailbox: yourname (from your Orange.net account)
Password: yourpassword (from your Orange.net account)
Outgoing Server: smtp.orange.net
Outgoing port: 25
Email address: use your Orange Net email address (set this up if need be via the orange website)
Clie Settings
1 Go to SETTING then PREFS
2 Select CONNECTION
3 Add NEW
4 Name it CUSTOM
5 Connect to MODEM via INFRARED
6 Dialing TOUCHTONE, volume MEDIUM
7 Click on DETAILS and select:
speed at 57,000
flow CTL at AUTOMATIC
INIT Sting: ATX
8 Go back to PREFS in main menu. Select NETWORK
9 Service: ORANGE NETWORK
10 User Name: yourorangenetaccountname
11 Password: yourorangenetaccountpassword
12 Connection: CUSTOM
13 Phone: *99#
14 Click on details…
Connection type: ppp
Idle timeout: whatever
Query DNS: Select
IP Address: select AUTOMATIC
AOL UK provide free PDA software for your Clie. I haven’t tried this. (Keyword: PDA).
I have spent $20 and downloaded more up to date AOL software available from Handango.
IMPORTANT:When logging in to AOL software on your Clie, select location as 'ANOTHER ISP' - as opposed to the usual 'HOME' location.
Good luck!
ps Many thanks guys for all the advice I get off this superb site!

I must be an idiot. Have AT&T GSM service on a Nokia 6310i. Trying to connect using both IR and Bluetooth to an NR70V. Can't connect at all. I've got the Clie configured to specs in here. Is there any special setting I need to have in my phone to make this connection?

I'm in the same boat.
I can Pair

But I can not connect. I have a GPRS account and they have used my phone to connect via Palm, Win CE. But no go with Sony.
I noticed that the NX has a connect via Phone? NR doesn't have this.

That would be nice! In a heated call to ATT the end result was this:
-A GSM modem call takes up the bandwidth of five voice calls.
-ATT would rather charge you x cents per kB than burn your minutes at 5x rate.
-ATT has disabled the use of ISP setup on their network. (meaning your dial-up ISP setup avoiding m-mode).
-ATT has also disabled the use of the phone as a bluetooth modem. (They claim)
-ATT will be changing the fee structure.
-ATT loves your money.
-ATT has very good cell phone customer support but bad service options.
Cheers

That's called Circuit Switched Data or Hi-Speed Circuit Switched Data. Not many carriers offer CSD (Cingular does) and even fewer offer HSCSD.
-ATT will be changing the fee structure.
They said that months ago when Sprint and T-Mobile started offer unlimited flat rate Internet service. Still no sign of a fee structure change.

AAAAAARRRRGGGG!!!!
So Close...
I added the Internet2 to my account to get the APN2 and spent3 hours on the phone with a very helpful CRS
I can connect and am using PocketLink2. I even get the Tmobiles internet accelorater page. But NOTHING ELSE!
First I thought it was the browser, so I jusped over to my Avatgo - which has never failed me (even using IR w/ a free ISP).
No dice - I get an error:
Online error, an unknown network error has occured...
I thought that if anything, my AIM should work, but after the screen says connecting, it times out after a bit..
Any insight?

I have a NZ that I am trying to ge to work with a Nokia 6310i (AT&T GPRS) via bluetooth. Things work fine when I connect my laptop via Bluetooth ( I get on to the GRPS network fine). The problems come when I try to dial from my NZ. It connects to the phone fine but the dialing never goes through????
I have paried the phone without a problem. I have loaded the phone driver from the Palm website without a problem. I can send SMS messages fine via bluetooth. This all seems to work fine. Just can't get the dialing to work via RAS.
I have set up the connection to us my Nokia phone. I have set up the network to connect to the phone via RAS. The User Name and Password fields are blank. I am using PPP. My dialing string is *99***1#. I am at a loss.
Does anyone know if there is something in the SIM card that has to be set different for the NZ versus my laptop??
I appreciate any help someone can give.

THis is all great info, i'm planning on buying an NZ90 and a T68i phone to get on the internet with it. My next PDA needs to be able to get online and one of it's primary functinos.
So my question is this, how fast is the connection? I'm probaby going ot go with AT&T becaus they have better Megabyte plans. THey offer megs not kilobytes. I noticed someone had it set to 115k, but obviously it's not going that fast. So how fast is the connection on the CLIE's to the wireless provider via a T68i bluetooth phone?
I've also heard of some people using their phone to dial up to an ISP and use bluetooth to link the phone to the clie. How fast does the phone connect in this configuration and that would technically be a 'voice' dialup, so i could then axe the whole data plan thing if it's faster. I don't think the T68i can be used as a modem though can it? I'll have to get a different phone that also has bluetooth and modem ability.

I have used a T68i with both a Tungsten T and the new NZ90 and yesterday I ordered the new T650. Bluetooth is the best. I keep the phone on my belt and can access my email or internet in a matter of seconds via GPRS or I can use it as a dial up via my isp at earthlink. It works both ways. I can also send and receive SMS text messages via the phone and my Clie. I have a Treo 270 but there is no place for MP3 and and amount of documents that I need room for. I also picked up the bluetooth GPS unit so when I travel I don't get lost. It all works great and for the most part is pretty easy to set up.

Wow, web surfing with GPRS is so much faster than IR, plus no more line of sight problems. Only I couldn't afford an NZ90 and couldn't wait for the TG50 so I got a Tungsten T. Oh well, if a TG with VG comes out I'll "trade in" my T615 and have the best of both.

I'm not sure how the Nokia works but on my T68i I just make the phone discoverable and then search for it with my sony or palm from the bluetooth in the preference section. Your sony or palm should find it and then you need to accept as partner with the phone and put in a pass key and then accept on sony or palm and enter the same pass key. You need to make sure you accept as a trusted device not just accept or the connection won't last. Sometimes you need to turn your phone off or reset your sony or plam if it gets confused. You will also need to disconnect from GPRS service like email or web when you want to make a phone call. That should do it.
I have GPRS working with Cingular, but I am also interested in finding out how to get GSM/CSD (Circuit Switched Data) to work...when I try calling my ISP, I get the "calling xxxxxxx" pop-up with the status bar on my T68 appears and then goes away immediately before any connection is made. Then I get an "Error: no carrier" message on my NR-70. Has anyone gotten this to work? I want to be able to use my abundant voice minutes when I run out of my 1MB/month of GPRS...

gillispi,
What phone carrier do you have. I have T68i/NZ90/ATT. No luck. They are paired, but it says I have a bad connection. I can't do a manual dial out or sms?? Ideas? I thinks someone said that ATT sabotaged this, but T-mobile lets you get away with this.

AT&T does let you use Bluetooth as a modem fine, they just don't support it on the Palm OS (only IR) but do support BT on the Pocket PC.
Go figure since they are the wireless provider for Tungsten W :-)... This is according to their tech support, which was a very frustrating call and of no help. They didn't think they were planning to support it in the future either......
The key is to make sure the phone driver is installed on the Palm/Clie, these are available at Palm's site at http://www.palm.com/fi/mobile/drivers.html or look under their BT SD card support.
This little fix, thanks to a person on this forum, cured my hours of frustration, now it works like a charm (using AT&T, Clie NR 70V/BT MS, T-68i).

Thanks gillispi for the good word.
Gaurav, thanks for your direction. I now have the bluetooth working between both devices. Here is the rub. My Clie is now at least dialing out, but I don't think ATT is recognizing my account. It might be the settings. I receive a "Service Connection Progress" message - "Error: no carrier (0x1102)."
If I may ask, what are the settings you are using, specifically

Init String
Connection Type
Idle time out

Primary DNS:
Secondary DNS
IP Address

I found this great website on AT&T wireless that helps walk you thru the process of connecting up a Palm OS device to their GSM phones and other devices (Blackberries, Laptops, etc.). Here's the URL: http://support.attwireless.com/awswls/support/devices.jsp
Although it doesn't have Palm OS 5 listed, try using the Palm OS 4 settings.
Using the walkthru, I connected my Nokia 7210 and NX-70 using the infrared port onto the GSM network. I was able to use email and Netfront to browse!!
Good luck!

OK Ceasar here you go
Speed 115,200
Init String - *99***1#
Connection Type - PPP
Idle time out - Never
Query DNS - Yes
Primary DNS -
Secondary DNS
IP Address - Automatic

in the settings above the dns won't apply when you use dhcp (auto assign ip address).
it uses the mmode data, not minutes so plans start at $2.99 + 0.02 per k, $7.99 for 1 mb, etc. the phone shows the total data sent/recieved in the last session when you disconnect (this is in bytes, not k so don't get freaked out!)
it's also under calls - time & cost - data counters on the phone. i try to reset data counters around my billing date to keep a very rough track, especially since i'm debating if i should upgrade the plan.
good luck.

Hi!
I have a NR70V with a bluetooth memory stick and a Siemens S55 cell phone.
I could connect via blluetooth to exchange adresses and so on.
Now I wanted to connect to the web using gprs (gprs works on the phone itself)
I set the number (*99***1#) and the initstring (+cgdcont=1,"IP","web.one.at")
Using fix DNS and automatic ip.
I always get a PPP timeout, what could that be?
any ideas?
thnx,
Tom
I managed to get my SJ30 with BTMS and Siemens S55 talking... I gave the information a few weeks ago at this link:
http://www.cliesource.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5115
I've noticed that if I the signal strength drops to 1 bar it can be difficult to get a GPRS connection.
Also - sometimes I can't get the application to connect properly, but if I go the network preference settings and select connect there it works.

I just wondered for selfish reasons, if anyone with a t68i, and like me too poor to afford a BT MS, could post their settings for connecting their phone through IR to their T-Mobile account??

I use Cingular so I don't have the setting for T Mobile.
gillispi,
Have you tried using your T68 as a dial-up modem on Cingular (so you can call your own ISP or company network), or do you only use it for GPRS?

i believe that in can use the phone minutes....

I use it both ways due to travel. When I am out of the Cingular area I use it to dial up my ISP (Earthlink) to down load email and to view the internet. When I am Cingular area I use the GPRS. The only difference that I see is that the GPRS connects much quicker then the other.
My settings for the ISP are
Service - I called it Earthlink
User Name - Your ISP User Name
Password - Your ISP password
Connection - BT to Sony-E T68i I have mine set up on bluetooth but this connection could also be IR. You just need to go to connections and create the one you want
Phone - What ever the ISP phone number is
Hope this helps
Thanks, I ultimately got it to work after FINALLY convincing the customer service rep to transfer me to technical support, who were able to activate CSD (circuit-switched data) on my account, which the customer service reps kept insisting was already active. Moral of the story: keep plugging away until you get a real technical support rep, and ask them to activate CSD on your account if you want to be able to dial-up to your ISP using your voice minutes.

Ceasar, were you ever able to get connected via GPRS on TMobile?
I have just recieved Nokia 3650 w/ Bluetooth and Tri-band capabilites for my travel. I am also trying to use GPRS through the bluetooth connection so that my TG50 can connect a lot faster then it is now using the normal GSM data line. Very slow by the way. I know GPRS would be alot faster if I can only get the connection info.
Can anyone help??
Thanks,
Rick

Sorry for the delay. If you go to the Sony sight and download the mobile mgr and install it on your TG50 you should be able to connect T Mobile GPRS right away.

Thanks blastradius,
Been trying to connect to the internet from my nz90/ t68i for about two weeks. Been looking through manuals, my mobile operator's website etc and was getting frustrated. Your instructions were simple.

rmaharaj, were you ever successful in getting that combination to work? It's the same setup I have, and I can't get past a PPP timeout.

I live in Canada, and use Fido as a service provider, does anyone have the settings to connect to them with IR on T68i and GPRS??
First, you need to contact Fido to activate the GPRS setting in your phone (via thier monthly packages for mobile internet). They do not offer this for prepaid plans (pay-as-you-go).
I'm working with a T310 and a T665C with no problems.
T310: DataComm. service is Fido GPRS
T665C: Connection
Name: GPRS modem
Connect: modem via IR
everything else left alone.
T665C: Network
Service: Fido
UN & PW: fido (case sensitive)
Phone: *99***1#
everything else left alone.
For email purposes: the SMTP service must be: gprs.fido.ca

Hey guys, I FINALLY got internet using Bluetooth with a Tecom BT3030 dongle and a SonyEricsson T616!! After 3 half hour calls to Cingular customer service, and a whole day of tinkering, all it came down to was 2 min with tech support :) Thanks for the tip Rob, thats exactly what it all came down to. Another reminder however, after they activate CSD, make sure you turn off your phone for a minute and turn it back on so the system has a chance to reset.

HELP!!!!!
I already did everything, still I can’t configure my GPRS connection. I have an nx80 with BT MS and a bluetooth enabled nokia 6310i. I already activated my GPRS account with my cellphone company.
I first tried a configuration wherein I checked the query DNS and IP Address, and this did not work. My clie connects with the phone and is able to go as far as the signing on prompt and the cell says, “creating GPRS connection”. But then it fails and says “GPRS access points not valid”.
So I got the primary and secondary DNS numbers and inputted it on the clie. (the phone company gave me 205:57:96:3 and 202:57:96:4, I am in the Philippines btw)
Still this did not work. So I unchecked the IP Address and put in 10.102.61.46 which is the IP address I saw on the GPRS setting on my phone. Still, the phone says the same thing, “GPRS access point not valid”. I already did all sorts of combination but nothing seems to work.
I’m stumped. So, I went back to using the dial up connection I have been using to connect to the net. Can someone help me with this? PLEASE!!!!!

I am using a UX50 with a T610 on T-Mobile. Did everything recommended and I am getting an error on the phone saying Wrong Access Point. Everything else works, SMS, T-zones on the phone. Phone sees the Clie etcetc...but as soon as it tries to connect the "Wrong Access Points" Message comes up and frankly its driving me crazy. I have been able to isolate the fact that nothing comes up when i don't put in a user name or pass in the Clie network settings. However, I know everyone puts something... Any help wold be greatly apreciated!!!
