Well, we were just the first in a continuing saga, i.e., SONY discontinuing the CLIE. :eek:

It is highly suspect that the minidisc format and AIBO robots are next on the chopping block along with the Pocket VAIO.

Sony has been killing itself with it's proprietary crap and tendency to build in obsolescence into it's products. That kind of stuff may work when you have a monopoly, but not when there are viable competitors.

Examples:
1) Memory stick- built their own proprietary flash memory instead of supporting existing standards.
2) Didn't provide upgrade path for earlier Clie owners when they went from Memory stick to Memory stick pro. I suspect this was due to design issues they weren't willing to acknowledge. Looks like the same thing is happening with Memory sticks >2gb, which require FAT32 support.
3) Betamax.
4) ATRAC, their proprietary music format and their refusal to support the MP3 standard, until recently. (I think this, and the fact it doesn't support data storage, is what is killing the Minidisc).

In general, Sony seems to be out of touch with what people want to buy (namely products that support existing standards) and tries to sell people their proprietary crap to lock them into Sony. Sony products may be good, but not that good.

The Vaio is fine :)
They shouldn't try to make a iPod killer. They just can't do it, they have to screw it up somehow.

I have know of that for a long time. It may be cool, it is extremely stylish, but it is hard to use. It has to use the Sony software "which sucks".

THAT is why Sony can't beat the iPod :)

I agree with you...
If only SONY would make the same unit and have an open source idea to the software,
MP3, ATRAC3+, ORGGIS, WAV, PCM
Have it record as the minidisc, line in analog/optical, mic to memory
Have an touchscreen OLED 240x320 for movies, software screen, etc. (from CLIE)
maybe have a camera 3M
in the same unit.....
Now that would be sexy!

Stupid decision by Sony management is the one who killing Sony Corporation.
If they opened up their sources, it would be a lot better.
