View Full Version : Disposable income coming: PSP or Ipod Nano?

I know they hardly do the same thing, but since I am only willing to carry one extra handheld device it is relevant. I've heard great things about the nano, but if I buy a PSP plus a big memory stick I might have the "Music on the go" thing going on plus WiFi, gaming, and other thingies. On the other side, I may not use those thingies most of the time, specially with Sony's propietary UMD's and not that much goof-around time and WiFi hot spots.
This is basically an insecure poster thread. If you were to choose between the two, what would you choose and why?

Well.... I don't know if my opinion will count. I get bored easily with games, once the mystery of how it was done is gone, the game holds no appeal. The handheld games are a level behind in technology, so easier to figure out, I'd be constantly paying for new games that get used a very short while. I keep debating on a full-up console, but never get around to it for the same reasons. Too single use, and I am too easily bored with games.
Where-as the Ipod Nano I can change the content and when the music gets old, I swap it out for others. I love my iPod, I got the real thing not a mini or Nano because I wanted the photo extension.

Go with the iPod.
I definitely wouldn't buy a PSP for its current selection of games, or even the games slated for this fall, and when it comes to music playback, it can't hold a candle to the iPod.

They both suck. Get a DS! :p :D
Well, the Nano is kinda cool I guess.... but I like the PSP too (Only the <v1.5 ones 'tho...)

I have a DS and absolutely love it. :) But for music, the iPod is soooo great.
Sony's next update will prevent peeps from downgrading their firmware. The last thing they want is peepholes buying the hardware, but not the software. :)

My point is, wouldn't I get a lot of extra functionality for $100 more? Wouldn't it be worth it? Of course, I don't want the music quality to suffer, since that is like the no.1 priority...

Go with an iPod period then. A PSP is at best a mediocre music device when compared to an iPod.

Send Disposable Income to me :-D!!!
Haha, j/k j/k. I've tried both devices and personally I perfer the PSP over the Nano.
The PSP is a much bigger and harder to carry around than the Nano, but it offers so much more. Most of you have already named them, so I won't go through the time consuming process of doing so, but it's just more useful. I feel that the quality of the PSP is much better than the Nano. Though some PSPs have been having pixel problems, they're quiet rare and the effect is neglectable. My Nano's screen lost a block of lines after a few days of usage... I was quite disappointed, but it's a problem only appearing in a small fraction of iPods. The Nano's are smaller, and much more vulnerable. Being so thin and so, it's easy to crush or damage, especially the screen. PSP's much more expensive, but it'll be worth ur buck :-)!!!

I've also used both device, and the PSP does offer more, more mediocrity. Just like a Clié it really doesn't do any one thing well, where as the iPod does music great, and mainly because of its iTunes inegration. I would never recommend a PSP to someone just for music, it really can't compare to a dedicated music device like an iPod.
Speaking of vulnerable, there have been cases where PSPs have broken during play, because the users were holding the device too tight. That's sad. :D Some of these new Nanos are having issues, but what can you expect from a first generation (Just like the PSPs.) Fortunately Apple is addressing these issues, so future Nanos and replacements should hold up much better. My 3G iPod on the otherhand still works like a champ and is built like a brick, and I use it every day. My battery is probably shot though, since I keep it plugged in 100% of the time and mostly use it when it's connected to my desktop or Powerbook.
The PSP is just an OK music player, but when compared to an iPod+iTunes, it sucks. I've heard the word "fragile" used to describe PSPs from both peeps on-line, and my friends which own them. I'm always extra carefull as I hold them, as not to cause any damage. ;)
Read this Nano review. Their Nano was dropped several times, sat-on, ran over by a car, and thrown 40 feet into the air before it finally died. A PSP would've died probably after being sat-on. :)

If you're gonna play games, the PSP is the only way to go, but you better get one quick before they seal all the bugs because on it's own it sucks; There are hardly any good games for it.
My brother uses it almost exclusively for emulation stuff (It's a lot better at it than my Zodiac sadly :().
But if you're gonna do that, you'd be better off getting the GP2X ;)
The Nano is a non-issue as a carried device; The thing is just so damned small you'll notice the headphones more!
You WILL need to get some sort of screen protection for it 'tho; The *****ing about the screen is not unfounded; It scratches ridiculously easily, at least in the early models...
The Nano has practically no mass it can take a lot of beating, but a chubby dude in tight jeans will bend and crush the poor thing, totalling the LCD quite easily. The PSP is a lot heavier so heavy impacts will damage it and you would NOT put it in a pocket, but ours has taken a lot of punishment so far and is still working perfectly. (Wish the same could be said of my Zod2... the bloody analog stick is going!!)
How about the Video iPod? :D

As mentioned before, its kind of an apples and oranges comparison, but I'll side with the psp, offering much more functionality. The psp can:
play games- not a lot of great ones so far, but I picked up GTA today and it is AMAZING, nearly as good as any of the PS2 versions. Future releases will also be able to play online.
play movies- either downloaded to memory stick (decent picture quality) or on UMD (excellent picture quality)
listen to music- sure, its not as good sound quality as an ipod, but one advantage it does have is that you don't need head phones to listen to a psp.
Web browser- this is a recently added feature with the latest firmware update (2.50), anywhere you can access a wifi hotspot, you can access the internet. It works better than you'd expect.
View photos- ipod can do this as well, but not nearly as functional due to its significantly smaller screen.
I have an ipod as well, and enjoy using it, but if I could only have one, it'd be the psp hands down.

Neither!
Why are people so drawn to iPods? They're way too popular. There are so many other absolutely awesome players out there!
Don't get a PSP - no memory. Get a dap instead, but if I were you, I wouldn't go with the iPod. Do some research, choose the one with what you need most.
Go to dapreview.net
I'd recommend the cowon x5L, but that's just me...

If you want music get an iPod. If you must.
If you want fun games, get a Nintendo DS. The new games have gotten consistently good ratings at most major gaming sites. You can't beat Mario Kart, Mario & Luigi, and Kirby: Canvas Curse for amazing fun.
If you want to look cool, get a PSP. Graphics-wise, it positively destroys the DS, and it beats the DS pretty soundly on aesthetics as well. However, the games aren't as good (IMHO) and the loading screens are terrible. Just playing a demo of a fighting game in the store (when I was buying Mario Kart DS), it took almost a minute and a half to load each match. Once loaded, however, the graphics rocked, and the game wasn't too bad neither.

One step ahead of you. Hardware media button points directly to iTunes :)
Come to thing about it, no button points to anything MS.

Very nice.
I always rip the windows key of my PC keyboards, it's EVIL!!! I can't tell you how many times I've hit one of those useless keys during a game. :)
Now get one of these (http://www.nintendo.com/channel/ds) to compliment it.
