I'm thinking about getting an SJ-20 in a couple of weeks. Is the screen on the SJ-22 really nice? Is there ghosting? What about the "curtaining" effect like in the SJ-30? Is it brighter than the SJ-30?

I believe it's brighter than the SJ30 and I've never seen that curtaining effect on the SJ22.

The person probably meant SJ22, the color Clie....

SJ20 is the monochrome one with ghosting, etc.

Unless color really matters to you, I'd go for SJ20. It has a superb paper-white backlight that's even better than the color models. Furthermore, it's monochrome so the battery will last very long, even with the backlight on. The display is perfectly readable without the backlight, so you can save your battery even more.

The screen on the SJ22 is excellent. I even lacks the blue tint that affected the SJ30 and other Sony screens.

I can't agree on that the screen of SJ20 is "perfectly readable without the backlight", IMO the screen is too dark in most cases to be read without the backlight.

SJ30/22 a no-brainer if you have $$$ or really need color or fast graphics, otherwise SJ20 is fine, the 50% price difference made the decision for me. :)

well now is the situation a bit different => you can get sj22 for 199 usd directly from sony!
for sj20 you pay like 149 usd so the difference is not that big
i would definitely go for sj22 (but you might try to find some spare sj30 => i like it more + it comes with DTG :D)

Both the SJ20 and SJ22 are great values IMO (depending on what you can get the SJ20 now for). Backlight is a must for both IMO, why not since the battery life is so good anyway?

The SJ20 has better battery life, but OTOH you can't adjust the intensity. By cutting SJ22 backlight to 25% to 50% or so, the battery life is also very long.

Yes, color is not really necessary unless you use it to view photos/maps and play games. I used Prism before which has a much better "color" than any current Clie model (except resolution of course). But I found that color really distracts you very much. If you just use it formally without entertainment nature, SJ20's B&W is more than enough. The paper-white backlight of SJ20 is more comfortable than all other Clie models. If you compare SJ20 with T665/SJ30 etc, you will find that sony's color display is still biased to blue slightly.
I bought SJ20 (instead of SJ30) is due to this reason but not only money matter.

I agree SJ20 needs backlight for indoor use. But, the light-reflection ability of SJ20 is better than color models in outdoor. Remember that in outdoor the backlight doesn't help at all. You will find color display is too "dim" to view.

Yes, once I went outside (well I rarely use my CLIE outside) and use my CLIE, I thought the backlight was damaged. The screen was very clear still, and turning on and off the backlight seemed have no effects at all. The reflection is really good.

If only one reason related to the screen is to be chosen for getting SJ30/22 over SJ20, I would say it's the slow refresh and moire pattern.
