How do you view your recorded movies on your PC?

Use the MSImport program to copy your recorded movie files off of your Memory Stick. (See "Jim's Tips #2" for how to set this up.)

OK. The files get stored in the /MQ_ROOT/100MQV01 directory on the Memory Stick with cryptic names like "MOV00001.MQV". Just use MSImport to copy the file to your PC (like your Desktop or some other folder.)

Next, rename the file to something more meaningful, and here's the important part: rename the file extension from .MQV to .MOV! The files are QuickTime-compatible files and will play very nicely using the QuickTime player. Note: It looks like QuickTime version 6.x plays .MQV files without renaming the extension, but Sony ships v5.x with the Clie.

But wait...there's more!

What if you don't have QuickTime? Though QuickTime is popular, not everyone has it installed, and Windows Media Player, by default, cannot decode the QuickTime format. One solution is to convert the file from a .MOV file to a .MPG MPEG-1 format using TMPGEnc, and the resulting file will be fully Windows Media Player compatible. The problem is that TMPGEnc doesn't read QuickTime files by default, so you need a plugin. Based on some information found at VCDhelp (http://www.vcdhelp.com), download the QTReader (http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/4942/svcd.html) plugin for TMPGEnc Just unzip the file and stick it in your TMPGEnc directory and you can now select .MOV files from your Browse dialogs.

TMPGEnc has a TON of settings to tweak, so the scope of TMPGEnc goes far beyond this tip, so please go to VCDhelp for help with TMPGEnc.

Oh, and if you really want to go all the way, you can burn the resulting MPG file to a CD-R in VCD format using something like NERO and view your video on your TV using a VCD-compatible DVD player! It isn't the best resolution, but it does work!!!

Bonus tip:
You may not know this, but in order to record video, you must have a Memory Stick installed. This may not be obvious at first!

Confused!?

If you install the Quicktime app as supplied on the disk that comes with the NX, it still can't play the clie file (renamed to mov or not)!? It needs some update from the web but is unavailable!?I also tried the TMPEng solution and that just gives me a white movie with no sound!?

Can anyone shed some light for me

quicktime 6 is free and it plays mqv's even though u have to select all file types. I've got win XP pro and it works fine with quicktime 6. (u may have to uninstall quicktime 5 if u cant use the update button, though the update button should work)

www.apple.com or www.quicktime.com (not sure if the second works)

OK- here's a question. I have done this and viewed a couple of videos on my PC- problem is that I deleted one video from the Clie and when re-installing it to the correct directory it will not play in the NX Movie Player- the PC still recognises it as a Quicktime file even though I have renamed it to the original .MQV file name.

It's as if renaming it has changed the file properties completely. Any ideas???

I have tried the Image Converter as well and that worked but the resulting video just skips from the start to the end and causes a soft reset.

Not sure if this is the problem, but I noticed that the file names are case sensitive. I had a hard time figuring out why it would n'twork once, but it was because I didn't use caps.

Dumb question, but how do you change file extensions from MQV to MOV???

Go to rename the file. In Windows you can do this by right-clicking on it and selecting rename. Then edit the file name from Whatever.MQV to Whatever.MOV

Dude, I was doing that but the file ends up to be blahblah.mov but still MQV file

Do you have the option in Windows set to hide the file extensions? If so, you might need to turn that off. I'm guessing that the full filename is blahblah.mov.MQV . That option is found in Windows Explorer under Folder Options.

I found out that u could also use quicktime pro to convert the MQV. file to AVI or even mpeg-4 and use TMPGEnc to convert to MPEG

It took me about 4 hours to figure out how to view Clié movies on my PC, and that's after I found the useful references on this site. The Quicktime shipped with my Clié couldn't play the renamed .MQV files until I upgraded to version 6.1 via the link. However the Quicktime player doesn't work too great on my 330MHz AMD K6 powered PC and I long to get them converted into MPEG or something more versatile. Trouble is I don't fancy labouring for even more hours on this task.

I have gone witless trying to view my movies on pc.. Owned this dang thing for nearly a year!

I spent forever trying to "convert" it to .mov format. lol. Can we rename me from .jdjit to .happy?

without renaming the file, you can still view the clip under *.MQV as long as you open the file with QuickTime 6. Also window will prompt you if you want to associate this file extension with QuickTime 6. Therefore all *.MQV files will be QuickTime playable but also will run with MoviePlayer at the same time. :D

I don't mind having movies in quick time format, but WHY DOES THE PICTURE SKIP?

sony makes things like this that should be so simple, so difficult. I wont touch QuickTime with a 10 metre pole, though, because it alters file associations and takes over my PC with links and other crap. Oh well, i long for a PDA that will record in AVI...

just a tip. renameing file extensions in windows is impossible unless the file is unregocnised! otherwise it just changes the file name soz! try transfering to palm then rename! is this possible?

Yes, it is possible to rename the file if you transfer to the Memory Stick and use a file manager.
You could also go into the folder options of Windows and turn off the hiding of file extensions. Then, you will easily be able to change the extensions of any file.

Hi,

I'm just trying to make this work. I have this gorgeous video of a friend at work, and I can see it on QP 6 for myself but for sharing to people I have to make it in a format that is more reliable.

I have no clue of many programs and stuff, where can I get TMPGEnc?? and what is a plug in??? How do I make them work?

It converts most video formats into plain MPEG-1 format, which to me seems like what you might be looking for. :)

You can resize the video to your personal preference.
eg.320x240
Also you can adjust the frame rate, as well as Audio preferences to reduce the file size of your video.
