Who else thinks we should get higher resolution avatars? There are several times where I've wanted higher res for my pic.

I think they look fine.

How come your avartars look so much nicer than mine? I though the res was 100 x 100 pixels?

The max size is 100x100 pixels. Mine is 100x70 pixels with 300 pixels/inch resolution and 24-bit color.

Isn't the max avatar size 80 x 100 pixels?

Spiral

nope, it's 100x100, i think the current avatars are fine, making them higher resolution would take up more screen space, and it'd probably be detracting from the actual forum aspect.

Quote from the avatar upload screen:

"Note: the maximum size of your custom image is 100 by 80 pixels or 20000 bytes (whichever is smaller)."

Kill the avatars....

The thought of grown people trying to get enough posts to get a really cool picture....just seems scary.

Not everyone is on a cable modem or has DSL. Sometimes less is more.

I'm not really grown... I'm only 15.

But a board without avatars would be too drab and colorless.

If a few -20K images bog down your computer that is truly sad. A 56K modem should perform much better than that. You should consider switching to a better IP.

Even in my 56K days I didn't have much problem with internet slowness. The only reason I got DSL was to download huge files.

My dial up connection runs everything fine as far as avatars. Been waiting for DSL in my area for over a year now!!! I call every month and for the last 12 months they say, "yes, we arre currently working in your area, DSL should be there in 2 months" Yeah, whatever!!! Though, they have started digging for lines and what not, so hopefully I will be surfin at MUCH faster speeds with in a month.

Sorry if this is a little off topic, just had to blow some steam ;)

I think the Avatar is fine.

My 56K is also working great for the avatar. didn't even notice the slowness, as i think the forum content load up before the image

If you're creative you can do a lot with 100X80 pixels and 20K. We don't really need the bandwidth bogged down with more than that.

I AM trying to post enough to at least be called a member instead of a junior member. Why? I have gotten a lot of useful information and hope to be able to contribute the same.

By the way, my DSL modem just came yesterday and haven't had time to set it up (have to set up a VPN as well for corp firewall) Anyone have experience with that???

Agree that they're fine just like they are.

I have Adobe PhotoDeluxe, and I'm creating a new image that's 100 x 100 pixels, but it doesn't look too clean. My avatar just look kinda chunky.

Does it have to do with the resolution per in?

That would be my guess. That's what resolution is--dots or pixels per inch. You might be confusing resolution with size. I was incorrect about the max size here--it is 100x80.

Just to add,

DPI doesn't really play a factor in images on the web, they're all displayed pixel by pixel.

The current avatars are fine, no need for larger ones. Heck, I don't even care if I have one, I'm not racing to 100 posts.

They're fine the way they are now.

I guess it's just a matter of pride and respect. BTW, I am a regular member now so I guess it is a moot point...

I have learned much from cliesource. Thanks to all!:)

Hmm,
15 posts per page * 20Kilobytes = 300Kilobytes = 2400kilobits
2400 kilobits at 56kilobits per second = 42.9 seconds

Whats on top of all the other stuff in a page, if your not carefull you could be getting over a minute a page.
Obviously a few 20K images can make a difference.  DSL is not an option for all of us.

Exactly right. I was going to post that, good thing I read the whole thread first.

The DPI depends on the settings of your monitor. When you view a web page, you are looking at the image due to it's size, and then your DPI is a result of what resolution your monitor is running at.

One reason your avatars may be chunky is the way it is scaled down to 100x80 resolution. Good graphics programs, like Photoshop, will use tricks to average the difference between pixels and keep the image from looking distorted. Cheap programs (ala MS Paint) don't do this, and the result is a choppy looking image if you resize it to a different scale.

I think that higher resolutions is not necessary. 100x100 is ok for WELL DESIGNED avatars.
