I would think twice before trying this. THe general consensus is that this "appears" to work if you're lucky enough to iinterrupt the hard reset process just as it finishes restoring the internal memory partition before it hits your hard drive partition. If you're unlucky, you could end up with an LD that's completely dead.
I would sooner hotsync and backup up the LD HD and then do a real hard reset than take that sort of chance.

That is like saying, "Can I have a burger without the bun, meat, chese, and vegies?". A hard reset deletes everything. That is what it is for. The only thing you could do is make a backup.

Hi,
I disagree. It's only deleting everything, including the HD, because of what I think is a bad design: Palm says it's for security reasons, but the least they could have done is to ask the user if he wants everything to be deleted or not. I don't care about security on my Palm, it's not relevant for me. I resent the fact that I have to lose a lot of time after a "proper" hard reset to restore the HD's state. I am thankful for the trick mentioned above, which I used a few times, with no side effects.
If Palm had done the things correctly from the start, and used physical RAM instead of a partition on the HD, this wouldn't even be an issue.

Palm could've given us an option in Prefs, asking what happens when we press the reset button withthe power button. I you need security, you have to do a 30 minutes hard reset. If you dont need security, you can set it to give you an option of what to erase.

yeah, i agree that palm should give us a choice. anyway, i am thankful to the trick.

What is the best/quickest way to do a total backup of the HDrive? What is the best/quickest way to do a restore of the HDrive?

If the HDD isnt getting bscked when hotsyncing, you should use Drive Mode. Turn drive mode on, copy everything as a backup. If you hard reset, turn Drive Mode on and copy everything from that backup.

The problem here is that the HD format thing is not for the owner, it's for the dude who finds a lost lifedrive  ...
I'm guessing a lot more ppl use locked lifedrives and should not be feeling too secure about this trick. I HOPE palm will fix this bypass one day or another. This is a major security issue and they must loose a lot of corporate buyers BECAUSE of this.
I seriously doubt you may end with a completely dead LD. If this trick doesn't work, just hard reset.
As with ANY computers with ANY hard drives, you simply have to do backups and restore them when needed! (and I reread the thread before hitting submit and there are already backup solutions coming :) )
Oh and yes, it takes 30 minutes to format... Yeah who cares, go eat a sandwich and watch some TV in the meantime ;) ...
Sorry, i'm a little fed up about the whining on this issue... :)

I guess you don't have any mp3s on your LD either, because a hard reset takes those off too. So I guess we're up to an hour. Oh, I forgot about pics too.
This is the reason for the whining. The LD is the biggest (and most expensive) piece of Sh#%@ I have purchased from palm, and Im going back to my first Palm Pilot Pro.

Heh. Good luck putting mp3s on it.

got to agree with p-boucher here. The whining is amazing. So do a hard reset!! It doesnt harm the machine, takes half an hour, cleans up the crap in your machine and speeds it back up again (I feel). When I first got the machine back in July I tried doing hard resets with no HD delete but it didnt work on mine. Then after a month or so I began to think about it and Im amazed at my stupidity for trying it!! Breaking into a computer routine by shere luck of timing seems to be asking for trouble. Not meaning to have an argument with those who do it, if it works for you and its your machine its up to you. I just find it a scarey idea now. I just have a complete copy in one folder on my mac and if I need a hard reset I do it and then just load back in that folder - very easy! Then I copy over my saved pref file favepref file and Im away again. Total time hands on is about 5 - 10 mins, total reset and load up time I guess is 45 mins. Go make the tea! Also, EVERY computer device i own needs resets or gets frozen My mac froze on me about an hour ago. Last week I had to reset my wife's ipod (again). It's no big deal!
I use the 4 gb as a big dump area, and then I copy the things I use a lot - like ebooks and selected mp3s, maps, movies Also and family photos - on to the 1gb SD card. This way things are accessed quick using as little power as possible and in the event of you being a clutz (which I so often am) and you drop the LD you'll probably still have a working LifeDrive when you pick it up (no moving parts spinning away see).
I know the LD isnt perfect: it needs a brighter screen, video out jack, rubber feet that dont come off, CF slot etc BUT its still the best product out there at the moment. I must use mine for 6 or 7 hours a day every day, considering this the amount of resets (and the time they took ) is tiny to the point of being not worth mentioning.

Don't mean to whine here. But,,,
So I guess this what we can expect from now on from Palm. Their top of the line model will take 30 minutes to do a hard reset and plus you you will have to take the time to re-load all the other stuff back on the HD after the reset?
Sorry, no thanks. If I wanted a PPC, I would have bought a PPC.

I hear about how it takes 30 minutes to do a hard reset, can someone clarify if they have a password set on their LD when the hard reset takes 30 minutes?
I cleared my password, did a hard reset. Took 4 minutes to finish. Done.
