I just purchased a T665 and installed it succesfully on my laptop running Win XP. I now am trying to install it on my desktop running Win ME.

I was running Palm desktop ver. 3.1 on my laptop and desktop and had no problems installing it on the XP laptop, but when I tried to install it on my desktop I got the dreaded;

0x8004070 dll function call crashed. WSock 32.WSACleanup.
Setup will now terminate.

I then uninstalled the old 3.1 software and tried to reinstall but keep getting the same error. The next time I let it go all the way to the error message and then copied the folder where the installation was. I said ok to the error message which erases most of the data in the destination folder. Then I copied the backup folder I made into the destination folder which now successfully installed the 4.01 software.

The problem now is I can't install the USB drivers so the T665 is not even recognized. I tried copying from the install CD to the drivers directory but my computer hangs before the driver is installed.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Try installing MS Export from the CD. You don't really need it, but it may reinstall the USB driver if it is missing or corrupted. Another thing to try is uninstalling and reinstalling the 4.01 desktop.

If you just keep the T665C CD in the drive, and press the hotsync button it will find the drivers. If not, they can be found somewhere on the CD itself. Look under the PC directory, then do a find for a file with the .cat extension. There should be at least two on for hotsync the other for scsi, you at least need the hotsync one. Sorry I can't be more specific, I don't have my CD here at work.

I have tried the above suggestions with no succes. I found the driver files put them in the driver folder, but when windows says it found new hardware the palm just gives me the port in use error and the computer locks up.

Just an update on my problem. I downloaded the Palm 4.1 software from the Palm website and now my T665 sync just fine. The Sony software still won't load on my Windows ME machine.

A friend who bought a T665 at the same time is having the same problem I did. He suggested the Palm software and we both are up and running.

Windows98's more stable. I've been running XP since it was beta. With Service Pack 1 there is no question that XP is now the most stable home OS Microsoft has produced (Windows 2000 and NT excluded). When I was running Windows 98, wow I shudder to think of how many times I had to format and reinstall. I think I still remember my 98 unlock keycode by heart! :eek:

I think one thing that gives two different people different opinions/experiences is their habits. I used to download and trial lots of stuff. I've become very selective in that regard based on experience. "Uninstall" rarely puts your system back exactly like it was and over time, orphaned files, especially .dlls can bring your OS to its knees. Something to think about! ;)

Thanks for the advice, I have a copy of XP sitting on my desk and will be upgrading very soon after some backing up and housecleaning on my system. Thanks for your reply's.

I would wipe the machine clean and do a full clean install of XP if you can :)...
