I received CardBackup version 2 in last night's e-mail. It was posted to PalmGear today. I haven't had a chance to play with it yet - that's one of this weekend's chores (I love chores like that :) ). Here's the feature list from the readme:

New Features 2.0:
-----------------
- PalmOS 5.0 compatible.
- Backup only what's changed. CardBackup now only backs up what changed between the last backup. In fact the entire backup engine was rewritten.
- Safer scheduled backups. A lot of changes to make scheduled backups work more reliably.
- Scheduled backups now check to make sure the battery level is ok before continuing
- Completely rewritten Partial Restore page. *Much* faster load time and the ability to restore multiple databases at once.
- Added a beep at the end of a full restore.

It works well and it now turns off the device if it is in the cradle which it did not before.

Doesn't turn off for me. I do have "Stay on in cradle" checked, but if the Clie was off before CardBackup starts, it stays on after. Not that serious since I run backups at 5AM every morning. So if my Clie is in the cradle, it's on for an extra 15 minutes (I'm up around then anyway).

Would be nice if it worked for you properly though. I have an NX by the way. I brought this issue to the developer and it looks addressed from my point of view. Send him an e-mail.

How does it compare to BackupBuddyVFS? I've been using BackupButtinVFS all the time, but never got chance to restore from it yet, 'cause I haven't got into hardreset for almost three months now :-)

Since BackupBuddyVFS doesn't work for OS5, I bought this right away for my NX60.

I used to use BackupBuddyVFS on my N610C, and it seems the two programs are equivalent, although this one might be a bit faster.

I contacted JKWare about my Clie not turning off. He says "Yes, unfortunately the clie will capture CardBackups attempt to turn off the handheld and stay on because it's in the cradle. We're hoping to find a work around in the future."

So I guess it's a known problem.

I am using backupbuddyVFS on my NX70.

How long since you tried the latest version?

Here is a statement from Blue Nomad about BBVFS:
"Please note: OS 5 Devices including Palm Tungsten are not supported at this time".
I have been using it with my NX70V but it is not restoring correctly. Also, some of the advanced options don't work. I think I will try out CardBackup.

I can hugely recommend BackupMan, too.

I'm a registered user of CardBackup and it seems to work pretty good, but I still like BackupMan a little better. The restores on both were of identical quality. Neither could restore my skin that I placed using TnSilkChanger (which is an easy fix after the restore is done), but restored everything else. CardBackup gives a little more scheduling flexibility, while BackupMan backs up and restores faster (on new backups; CardBackup also now has an option to only backup what changed). The size of the backup is similar between the two. BackupMan has a nicer interface, and I like the fact that it's backup is stored as a single file rather than several hundred files. So, all in all, not many differences, but I see no reason to switch from BackupMan.

Oh well, I have had no problems, I have it scheduled to backup twice a day around noon and midnight when the unit is off. It does not take long because it only recopies the files that have changed (initial backup took 5 minutes, all others since take about 15-20 seconds) and I like the ability to restore everything or just a couple of files if neccessary. I was going to buy it after my trial came up but perhaps I'll wait until they say it is compatible or I might try another program.

Hi

This has been a very interesting thread and it made me to look at the following apps:

Backupman
BackupBuddyvfs
CardBackup 2

Whilst they all worked, they save the files as follows
Stored on CF only
Backupman
BackupBuddy VFS
MS Backup
Stored on MS and CF
CardBackup 2

As I have planned on the following utilisation:
CF Card
mp3

MS

Isilo Docs
Games
Backups

After finding that they worked, this is the most critical factor.

Whilst I fully understand that this is one of the side effects of the making the CF slot available and is not the fault of Eruware, I am happy that at least one of the 3 options gave me the choice.

So I am now a registered user of Cardbackup 2 and feeling a tad safer as a result of it. (knowing that Murphy rarely strikes the prepared!) :D

Regards

Nigel

I am a firm believer in Murphy... :D!

Larry

The problem is rarely with Murphy, but with his friend Riley.

Riley's always thought that Murphy was an optimist.
