View Full Version : What are transflective screens?

Some say that SJ22 has a transflective screen, and supposedly, this is a good thing.

I heard m515 is sometimes criticized for having a reflective screen instead of transflective. So obviously, there must be a huge difference between transflective screens and reflective screens.

So what are transflective screens, and are they really better than other PDA's that don't have it? (So SJ22 has a better screen than Palm m515?)

Thanks in advance

I think you could have used a little bit time to do a search on Google... ;)

Respective weaknesses (all are relative)

Transmissive - Difficult to see outdoor
Transflective - Image quality not as good as transmissive, a tech somewhat in between of the two
Reflective - Requires ambient light to illuminate the screen (technically it can't be "backlited", instead the backlight beams to the reflective back from the front of the screen, therefore its brightness is IMO, quite poor)

Reflective is the worst IMO. Sure it looks the best outside, but the other two are usable, and look much better inside. (And really, what percentage of time do you use your PDA outside?). The SJ-22 has a brighter screen with a wider viewing angle than the Tungsten T, so I'm sure it's better than the m515's screen.

Although IMO it's brightness could be better. I think it needs to be set at around 80%. 50% is too low on the SJ-22 IMO.

Get a TFT (transflective) screen. Images displayed on reflective screen looks washed out.

I always thought that TFT stood for Thin Film Transistor.  Are you saying that Thin Film Transistor (TFT) displays are considered "Transflective"?

No it doesn't, read the Brighthand article. :)

TFT is contrary to DSTN/CSTN (active vs passive). Transflective, transmissive and reflective are techniques to lighting it.

Thanks. That's what I thought. I guess the post by Jeffry was a bit confusing. He connected TFT with Transflective...

Sorry about that.
