Utilities:
Filez- file manager- better than some similar pay apps.
KeepSleep- app (not hack) that turns off the hardware buttons so a case, etc. doesn't turn on your PDA. Also kills all sounds upon command, perfect for meetings.
ThinFontFix- makes Clie's easier to read without using a hack.
BigClock- multi-functional clock that does almost everything nicely.
Convert- switches between types of measurements painlessly.
DiddleBug- wonderful drawing/note-taking/alarm utility.
Fun and Games:
Vexed- hard to explain block matching game- great!
Backgammon
YahDice- Yahtzee(R) clone
Xenoprobe and Little Angel (PG-13 rated)

Don't forget Ball2. The first time I looked at it, I was seriously thinking about deleting it again. In the meantime, it has become #2 on my list, which means I'm playing it only slightly little less then ScummVM (which is freeware as well, but needs commercial games in order to work)

RD100 - most, if not all, of the programs you listed are shareware, not freeware. Freeware means the program is free for you to use and distribute without a license. Shareware is free to use during the trial period only. If you decide to keep it, you must delete it, thus, it is not freeware.

I also found out something about X-Master today.
It will perform screen-captures from any Palm app you are viewing, and save them as a DiddleBug note!
You can then draw on top of the screen-capture in the DiddleBug note (circle things, etc) !!!
You need to try this to appreciate it !!
Get X-Master for this screen-capture feature alone !!

I downloaded MobileDB, and it is FREAKIN' AWESOME !!! :D :D :D
It is a fantastic tool for storing databases of just about anything you can think of (Inventory, Schedules, Lists, etc).
The MobileDB-Lite version is freeware, available at
http://www.freewarepalm.com/database/mobiledblite.shtml
It includes a PC-based tool which lets you convert a .CSV (comma separated values) PC file into Palm .PDB file.
Microsoft Excel will let you save a spreadsheet as a .CSV file.
You can then edit the .PDB file in the MobileDB PC-based tool, or if you buy the full MobileDB Palm app, you can edit your .PDB using your Palm.
The freeware MobileDB-Lite doesn't allow editing from the Palm, but it does let you sort the records, and it does almost everything else the commercial version can do. The only real limitation in the freeware version, is you can only view up to 10 .PDB database files. The commercial version doesn't have the limit. (I tried both).
You are able to edit the.PDB using the included PC-based tool, which itself is an excellent product.
I converted a few of my personal Excel spreadsheets and Word 97 docs into .CSV files, and then used MobileDB to convert them to .PDB files, and then loaded them into my Sony Clie. Now I can carry the data with me anywhere I go !!! And I love having this data organized in a database format, with Field Titles, and can be re-sorted using any combination of up to 3 of Fields, in any sorted order (ascending or descending).
There are also over 1,000 freeware MobileDB database files you can download from the MobileDB website. They contain very useful information about lot's of subjects. You can check them at this website: MobileDB Free Databases (http://www.mobiledb.com/?start=25&screen=mdb_srch&pName=Handmark&p=format^!MobileDB~!&sort_by=downloads)
I highly recommend MobileDB !!!! :D

You can read all about the DiddleBug screen capture hack, and download it from here:
DiddleSnap - Screen Capture Hack (http://diddlebug.sourceforge.net/snap.htm)
First you need to download and install DiddleBug Sketch app, which is also freeware ... and FANTASTIC.
Then you download and install DiddleSnap.
After you install the DiddleSnap Hack file, you go into X-Master, and check the box to activate it.
Then in X-Master, go into the Configure screen for DiddleSnap, to determine how you want to trigger the Screen Capture. I have mine set to trigger a Screen Capture when I drag my Stylus from the Calc button to the Find button.
Then you can do a Screen Capture from any PDA app of your choice! The Screen Capture is pasted into a new DiddleBug note, and you are immediately taken to the note. You can then draw on top of the note (circle things, etc.) It works GREAT !!!
I take Screen Captures of my PDA file lists, and circle ones I may want to delete at some point when I am low on memory.
The screen captures look just like the original screen, except they are now in a DiddleBug note.
This is one of my favorite Hacks !!! :D :D :D

Not yet mentioned:
-HotDate (NOT what you think!). It's a program for showing to-dos, appts. & addresses on same screen, with a timer to boot!
-BloodPressMgr. Superb program even if your BP is low. Just good for keeping records of your BP in general. Does all sorts of graphs & has a desktop conduit for print outs!
Mentioned but not qualified:
-The screen capture program with Diddlebug does not work properly with a hi-res screen altho' Diddlebug itself is a great program.
-CSpotRun is one of the best readers, free or not around, but it only works with .doc formatted documents. To change .txt format to .doc, use PInstall (already mentioned). Also, CSpotRun will not rotate properly in hi-res devices -- not a big minus in my book (no pun intended...):)

A pretty good drawing app is MemoRu! , which saves to MS BMP automatically and comes with all sorts of drawing tools, an easy and very compact interface and about everything you need for drawing.
Problem is, on OS5 devices there is a little bug which turns all drawing commands into a tool for drawing lines. I've come to like it but it's probably strange for people , who are not used to it. Still the program is one of my personal favorites.

Thanks for the tips.
Great idea but unfortunately it only captures LowRes image. If you have HiRes image, the result looks like crap. I can't recognize anything.
The speed of image capture is sooo slooww. It's like watching the grasses grow. I thought I crashed my Clie. It would be nice if the HiRes version comes out. But it's free and it's better than nothing.
DiddleBug is certainly much better than PalmOS NotePad hands down!
RD100
04-19-2003, 08:26 PM
Don't worry about the DiddleSnap not working in HighRes yet...
I see the DiddleBug HighRes just came out recently... so they will likely create a DiddleSnap that works with the HighRes DiddleBug. They know they have a huge amount of people who will want it !!
Also ... don't forget to download WindleBug ... if you use DiddleBug. WindleBug lets you view your DiddleBug notes on your PC !!! Once you try WindleBug ...you will know what I am talking about! You can re-size the notes on your PC desktop, view them vertically or horizontally, and save the notes as .BMP image files.
WINDLEBUG IS TERRIFIC !!!
And it's free ......
:D :D :D
RD100, thanks again. Yes I'll give WindleBug a try.

What a great thread. I am a Clie rookie who just converted over from a Sharp Zaurus.
One of the files that I found for that was a little program to measure the length of, and duration between contractions. Since my wife is very pregnant, I would like to have that on my Clie. Has anyone seen such a thing?
Will this work?

Thanks, it's close, but I don't think that I would be able to keep the information straight if I am the babbling idiot I expect to be when the time comes.
The program I had would keep a little spreadsheet of times. You could look back at the history of when they started, how long they lasted, and how far apart they were from each other.

All this talk about DiddleBug, DiddleSnap and WindleBug made me decide to
check if I am using the current version of DiddleBug...
and sure enough .. I'M NOT!
I have been using DiddleBug version 2.5 for the last 4 weeks, and I have been very happy. :) :) :)
I just downloaded version 2.6 .... and IT'S INCREDIBLE !!!!
They have recently added lots of GREAT NEW FEATURES !!!!
Thumbnail views, plugin support, and lots of other great stuff !!!
I won't list them all since you can read about them here: http://diddlebug.sourceforge.net/manual.htm
If you haven't recently upgraded your DiddleBug ... YOU SHOULD !!!
You will be very happy you did !!!
:D :D :D
I have both DiddleBug 2.6 and DiddleBugHR. They work independently, although they share the same plugins.
DiddleBugHR is based on DiddleBug 2.15, so it does not have the new 2.6 features, but it is HiRes. Unfortunately it does not come with DiddleSnap HiRes.
Now, only if they come up with HiRes version of 2.6 and DiddleSnap. That would be great. I've been waiting impatiently.
As far as freeware screenshot, I've been using HRCaptDA. It can capture HiRes image. Unfortunately, if I want to edit the image (circle things, mark here and there) on the Clie, I need to import it to PC, convert the BMP to PRC with PictureGear Lite, and then export it back to CLIE, and use CLIE Paint to do the editing. That is just too cumbersome.

Very interesting .....
36,500 apps, games, ebooks etc. all on a single CD.....
Divided up neatly into 56 categories.
$1.49 .... plus another $4.99 shipping ???
I would be curious what amount of stuff on this disk is shareware and freeware, and trial software. My guess is ... all of it.
But somebody did take the time to put it all together onto a CD... so that counts for something. So $1.49 doesn't seem unreasonable. It would probably take you hours to download that much yourself, and organize it into folders.
By the way ... I was the offical
5000th
viewer of this thread !!!
As Homer Simpson would say ... Wooo hooo !!!!
I never imagined it was going to get this much attention when I first wrote it a few weeks ago.
THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR YOUR TERIFFIC RESPONSES !!!!
And keep those opinions coming .... This information will help everyone have the best software !!!!

Psychomom -- Did you have any problems with Tide Tool? When I installed, everything worked except when I tapped on "PLACE". I got a 'falal error', restart. I've tried loading a single database and it gives me the same symptom. Sure would make kayaking a whole lot safer.

Wolfsmoke,
I did finally get it loaded, and it works great! Can't wait to go paddling and not be frustrated (or worn out) by the outgoing tide. Problem was that the PDA didn't have enough memory. I thought I had loaded some other apps to the memory stick, and when I took a look, they were resident. Opened my mouth before checking things out well enough. I guess that's the price I pay for being a newbie to the PDA world.
Thanks for the assist.

I've broken up my list of favorite freeware:
Games:
Domino! by Emilio Millan. It is a great implementation of Dominos. It pits the user against three other computer players (all of which have Spanish names). There is a difficulty setting that can be adjusted for every player. My most favorite game. I play it all the time.
Memorix by Markus Dresch. A simple memory matching tile game. The nice thing about it (besides being free) is that you can customize the way the tiles look. (both front and back). Replace the backs with your favorite soft-drink logo. Match two J-Lo's and win a prize! (well, maybe not, but at least you'll get your name in the high score table).
Sea War by TB Labs. A Battleship clone but with more ships and a twist that makes this game a little more strategic than Battleship. You can't go wrong with this one.
SolFree - by Smallware. A Solitaire clone. I use it mostly for Klondike. Very nice implementation at a price that you can't say no to.
Educational:
Moonphase - by Steven Kienle - A nifty little program that shows you the phase of the moon. Nice graphics.
PGeo - by Franke Dieter. Geologic time scale. Contains eras, epochs and periods. Very useful for remembering when dinosaurs became extinct. Impress your friends with your useless knowledge.
General Utilities:
Strip - Stephen J. Lombardo: Password keeper. Clean, easy to use.
SoftTrack - by Palmgear - Keep track of what you've installed and when. (as well as registration information, support numbers, e-mail addys relating to the software)

I have one MASSIVE complaint about MYCHECKBOOK:
It came with a dialer program called SEX attached to the .exe file. I think that automatically disqualifies a program from consideration in the "best freeware" category, no?
SEX (for detailed write-up) (http://research.pestpatrol.com/FileInfo/FileInfo.asp?PVT=1520604458&Submit=Find+this+PVT)

what qualifies as "best freeware app" really depends on your "definition" of freeware :D
but in all seriousness, here are the freeware apps that I could just not live without...
Productivity
AreaCodes so I know where that strange number on my CallerID was calling from (e.g. 304 = West Virginia)
AvantGo for news and information updates (link) (http://www.avantgo.com)
BART Quick Planner for getting me around the Bay Area (link (http://www.bart.gov/stations/palmPlanner/overview.asp))
Power48 for allowing me to leave my calculator at home (link (http://power48.mobilevoodoo.com))
CradleSnd allows me to launch Today when my Clie is resting in its bed :p (link (http://www.freewarepalm.com/utilities/cradlesnd.shtml))
Benchmark for testing how my juiced-up Clie matches up against the competition. (link (http://www.quartus.net/products/benchmark/))
Games
DopeWars - make money by buying and selling drugs... but watch out for the cops and loan shark (link (http://download.com.com/3000-2358-2122985.html))
MaryoBros - because sometimes you want to relive your childhood (or pass the time during lecture :D)
(link above)
This just tips the iceberg of the programs I could mention. (*runs off to download PalmaSutra*)
~Nick~
EDIT: Added links so it would be easier to find some of these titles. :)

yea so this game called Ball2 (http://www.freewarepalm.com/games/ball2.shtml) is still listed on Freewarepalm.com but the link no longer works. All of Naoki Ito's excellent (and former) freeware games are still listed (http://www.freewarepalm.com/authors/naoki_ito.shtml) on Freewarepalm.com but they no longer are available.
Here's his website (http://park15.wakwak.com/~n_i/). A few freeware games are on there still (get SP (http://park15.wakwak.com/~n_i/pm/sp.zip) its awesome!).
Fortunately Google tipped me off that the former freeware version of Ball2 is available (http://www.giochipalm.it/index.php?P=click_voti&cat=Arcade&NG=Ball%202&cmd=down&ID=35). Download before the NPAA kills it.
