I heard some people were able to compress videos and fit them onto their 128MS. I would like to put my Shrek DVD onto my Clié can anyone tell me any previous threds where this is described or tell me how. That would be nice, but maybe again it's not possible.

Even if I don't fit the whole film that's ok... maybe 60 minutes of it...

It's been a while, but I think the settings I used in Kinoma were:
320x240
160K/sec video
8 FPS
16K mono sound (Clie audio)
Final size was around 115MB.
I trimmied the credits off the end to save space.
My source file was a Quicktime. I ripped it from the disc to a huge AVI file, then cropped & re-sized it to 320x240 and encoded it to Quicktime at 100% quality. That files was, (hmm... wonder if I still have it... yep) about 2.2GB in size.
Th reason I use Quicktime is that Kinoma can't encode an AVI larger than 1GB, but will encode a Quicktime of any size.

Hello,
Unfortanetly my trial of the Kinoma Producer ran out!!! :( buhuhu..... you don't think you could send me the final shrek you have? Or did you erase it?
What do you think?
Thanks for the information though.
thats my next Endeavor..right now Im encoding a lot of music videos to my Clie (using TMPEGEnc then Kinoma). With movies I need to make sure I got enough space on MY HD when I decode the DIVX version of the movie to the MPEG-1 format Kinoma uses..
If you have AOL Joe..lets talk..

I tried The Art of War...But after about 12 hours of watching Kinoma not move an inch, I gave up...I used Smartripper to rip the dvd, which took about 6 hours I think...Then TMPEGenc to switch it to an MPG. The MPG is now about 556mb...just didn't have the patience to convert it with Kinoma...should it take as long as it was taking for me? Or was I doing something wrong?

A quicker way to convert from DivX to a Kinoma compatible format is to use Virtualdub with ONmedia's VP3 codec (freeware). It takes a fraction of the time TMPEnc takes, and all of the resizing and or cropping can be done in one step.
Enjoy

I have that program, except I don't know how to use it.... can you give instructions here? Thanks
yeah Yuriv..or anyone else thats willing to help..can u help With What Joes saying?
I use TMPEGenc myself and its constipated-turtle slow! I tried to use VirtualDub but it gave me a bit of a headache trying to change my Divx movie to somethign Kinoma can use (I suppose it would have to be Quicktime because Kinoma cant convert over 1gb AVI files..)...can kinoma convert over 1GB MPEG-1 files tho?
I think its time that someone put up the procedure to do this so that we dont need to always ask about how to convert it and rather HOW TO TRADE the Kinoma results of our labors. Right now I have a lot of Music Videos in kinoma format and theyre sweet looking (about 15MB each but still fun)
what do you say?

What kind of music videos do you have Mas? I have not gotten any further yet.... I'm so new at VirtualDub and TMPEG that I need step-by step procedures or someone to help me via a messenger. That would be nice.

That's a link to a step-by-step tutorial for ripping DVD and converting to MPG. Now there's no mention of Kinoma Producer on here, but this is at least the first half of the process of getting a movie on your Clie...
cool..thanks..ill have to remember that for later..most of the time I just use Kazaa for all my Divx's..But I suppose I can use my blockbuster card and "make it a blockbuster-ripping night" =P

Ok, I'm going to follow those instructions and get my DVD to Mpeg... then I will report back.
for virtualdub..is it simply opening a vid file and saving it as an avi?..id really like to know how to work this

That's a link to a program called DVDtoMPEG....it rips DVD's straight to MPEG in 700mb blocks...which is good for Kinoma Producer which can't handle files over 1gig. I haven't tried this program, just found it today...so if someone wants to try it out and let us know how it works (ie. time for rip, quality settings available, amount of compression) , that would be great...
EDIT: The above link is directly to the download...my bad....you can read up on the program BEFORE downloading at the following site:

Sorry Joe, I can't help you off the top of my head. All I can say is, I followed that tutorial step for step, and it worked fine for me. Go back and re-read everything and make sure you didn't skip a step!

There's actually a ton of apps available for converting from one format to another. Just go to Yahoo or Google and type in "convert divx to mpg" or "wmv to mpg" or whatever your heart desires. There's whole websites out there devoted simply to converting file formats and stripping copy protection. Give it a shot and see what you can find!

I have been able to convert a couple DVD's to fit in my sony clie (NX) 128 memory stick. I convert DVD to AVI all the time and i can help you with that. the trick is to convert AVI to clie format. (not all files work) I don't know why... I belive though that when using the DIVX 4.12 codec then everything works out. I just converted Full Metall Jacket to about 113mb's from a 700Mb avi file. try riping the dvd into your hard drive and then using Flask mpeg to convert it to AVI. after an avi is produced (using the 4.12 codec and 44100 sound) just right click on it and convert it to clie.

Somehow it seems I've missed something.
I read something like 'Indeo4' is convertable for Quicktime (QT), but QT-6 Pro couldn't open files encoded with Indeo5 (which is the only available for Virtualdub).
I read something about 'VP31' could be read by QT, but the an AVI-file encoded with Virtualdub couldn't be open by QT-6 Pro.
I read something like 'after an avi is produced just right click on it and convert it to clie'. Right-Click  I thought about Kinoma-Producer resp. QT. And QT could read DivX 4.12??? Or was it just this Flashreader???
Sorry, don't get it completely. The only way I found about conversion is an MPEG1-file for Kinoma.

VP3 is a great codec for the Clie video watcher, and it is Quicktime compatible.....it just doesn't seem to work in QT6, so I keep "QT 5.something" on my machine.
Probably the best source for info on AVI files and Virtualdub, etc is http://nickyguides.digital-digest.com/. Or, if you are interested in the MPEG route, use www.vcdhelp.com (you can just boost the recommended bit rates to get higher quality MPEGS more suitable for conversion).
I am planning to sit down and write a concise, step by step guide for what I feel is the easiest process, but its a matter of finding the time.
PS,
Geekgod, I am aware of the 1Gb file limit that cripples many programs, but have not run into this problem with Kinoma - I just finished converting Toy Story 2 from a 1.5Gb AVI file (encoded in VP3 with PCM sound). What is your experience here?

Are you using Kinoma Producer to convert the AVI to Clie Format? If so, would you mind sharing the Kinoma settings that you're using? I have a 550mb MPG that I think I should be able to compress enough for Clie, but don't know what settings will give me the best quality/performance.

Is anyone online? I'm trying to do this now.... can someone give me some tips? thanks in advance
Hey Joe I just realized that on page one of this post you had asked me about videos..most of mine were taken from Kazaa and are in MPEG format. then for settings I simply used
10 frames
240*180
480kbps
Clie audio stereo at 33mhz
most of the videos are sort of big..like 9-13mb per video but I dont mind so much..i could drop the picture size if I needed to stick a lot more vids into my MS but then id be squinting..
Vids I've gotten so far ( I study jazz/funk/hip hop dance so my vids are related to this)..i just really started this converting thing this past thurs. so im sure i'll be converting more soon
Aaliyah - "More than a Woman"
Alicia Keys - "Girlfriend"
Busta Rhymes "Woohah, Got you all in Check"
Christina Aguilera - "Dirty"
Donell Jones - "You know that I Love you"
Eve - "Satisfaction"
Janet Jackson - "All for you"
Jay-Z & Beyonce "Bonnie and Clyde"
Justin Timberlake - "Like I love you"
Missy Elliot - "Gossip Folks"
Nelly Furtado - "Turn off the Light"
Nivea & Jagged Edge - "Dont mess w/ my man/girl"
OutKast - "Fresh and so Clean"
Samantha Mumba - "Baby come over tonight"
Sean Paul - "Gimme the light"
TLC - "Girl Talk"
Toya - "I Do"
Usher - "You Dont have to call"
I dont know if this is up your alley but it is for me...buzz me on a PM if youd further wish to talk about it.

Hmmm... Kinoma used to stop encoding at the 1GB limit, so you only got a partial file. I wonder if they fixed that? I'll have to take a look at that again...
Have you tried playing your movie all the way through to see if it's all there?

Hi @all,
I tried a lot of apps the last time and figured out the following, which is ok for me (Mac OS 10.2.3):
I don´t want to see 320x240 pixel movies, I want to watch at 320x480 :)
I have a lot of AVI´s here which run with QT6 Pro, unfortunately without audio, but there is a trick, I tried it with SHREK:
Download DivX Tools here http://www21.brinkster.com/collectivesw/guides.html
Load your AVI into DivX Tools an extract the Sound as MP3 (very easy). Load the MP3 in QT and copy it. Open the AVI and paste the MP3 (scaled). Save it as a standalone movie. Choose a part of the movie around 350 MB (not bigger!!!). Copy and open a new window in QT. Paste it and save it again as a standalone. Open this movie in Kinoma, 10 frames, 320 x 480, 160kBit, Yamaha ADPCM and convert it. You´ll get a film about 110 MB, ok, you have two parts BUT WIDESCREEN :)

Why use 240x180? The rez make almost no difference in the final file size, so bump it up to 320x240. It will only make your files slightly larger, but MUCh clearer.
i tried using the vp3 codec with Virtualdub to encode a 700+ divx..got a 2gb avi file from it with pretty much cheezy quality..im downloading quicktime pro 5 tonight and am going to see if in the upcoming days I get a better looking output from it.
I like this topic very well. i have post an question in the nr70v fromum because i did not know there was an video forum. I will try to convert a file this weekend. But can anyone tell me how long it will take to convert the mpeg/mpg file to clie format?
okay i have quicktime 5 pro for my PC..NOT A MAC...
this is important because it doenst seem to be able to regocnize a Divx movie.
At the Divx Site theres a codec for use with the MAC Os so that quicktime can play it. No dice for Windows based OS's to allow quicktime to play divx's....any suggestions?
PIVO - depends on your computer power and size of original clip..i got a 700mb mpeg file to about a 141mb .pdb file(gotta retool it so that its less than 128) in a few hours...I do it when I sleep normally. Let the "kinoma fairy" leave me a gift when I wake up

Perhaps this helps: www.3ivx.com. I don´t know if this is a MAC Forum :) but great help and ideas!
I got my solution there too!
