It would pretty much be legal anyway unless you released a registered version of it. Bitmap editing isnt something devs usually care about. Looks nice though.

I've got the preferences set to update every day at 7am. Today, nothing happened. The program is in RAM. No other alarms were pending, or missed. Network was hooked up and running. No inidicator that it had even tried.

Also, it would be nice to have the ZL plugin updated to hi-rez. :)

BTW: Why does the ZL plugin take up so much space. It takes up nearly 2/3 of the screen but only shows one location and weather icon, and forces a scroll bar to appear? Can this be minimized so that this doesn't happen?

I would have liked to see the icons orginally posted by choongyouqi as they are gorgeous.

I also would like to see support for 320x480 and 480x320 as this looks like an app that would work very well on my TH55 but I want support for using all of the screen.

I do know it may not be possible for the screen support and I do use apps that are only 320x320 but still would like see it take advantage of the screen as it may be a selling point also.

But then you did post this as a beta so I may be premature in my observations above.

Ok, so I played around with it a bit, changed the time, and waited.. it worked this time... fluke.. who knows.. *shrug*

ofcourse it won't! :) actually I only mean the main application icon. becoz I'm making a shortcut on the bottom of the clie 3d launcher and the icon is sized 32x22 at there. However, the demo beta version, I only see changes on the big 64x44 icon, while the small 32x22 remain in the "ugly" 1. lol!

I'm behind a tich! Didn't realize a newer version was out..
I'm runninng ZL 5.30.

As for the prefs, it's hard to type out everything, so I'll just post snapshots of them soon as I get home.. give me about 6 hours..

The theme I'm using is the Mac OSx theme found over at BrightHand.

1) I like the combo of icons you have implemented now - i.e. choongyouqi's secondary ones along with your original weather ones. I prefer your real looking weather icons!
2) Agree - would love to see 320x480 res.
3) Can the weather icon in ZL4cast for ZLPluginToday be made hi-res? That would be great!
4) In ZL4cast for ZLPluginToday, can you fix it so that all of the selected city name shows?

How bout insted of having the app launch a web browser, you dl the radar map within 4cast, and have that be a new screen? Being there are so many browsers out there, with so many handhelds, it might be an easier thing to do, than to try to call up every browser on every handheld..

Select "Maps" from the menu, and you can view the sattelite maps posted by Yahoo on their site.
To show those I use the device default web browser.

To make this work with NetFront - I need a copy of the application...

Doing this would mean I have to develop not only the syncing mechnism within the Palm app, but also a conduit - a Windows (and Mac ?) application to get the weather, snd sync it to the Palm.

The background is one I made from a wallpaper found at wincustomize.com, in their wallpaper section. Do a search on "spectrum" and you'll find it. I made the .jpg background for a PDA by importing it using SplashPhoto's desktop app. Others will do it also.

P.S. You can now find "Spectrum" in the backgrounds "freeware" section of 1src. I had uploaded it to the old ClieSource files section but I guess it got cleaned out. Anyway, it's back! :)

BTW, I found the Fonts4OS5 font that I'm using conflicts with 4cast font in the ZL plugin screen. When I choose the large and bold (forth from left) font, the fist number of the clock was on top of the ")". The problem was solved by choosing the large normal (3rd) font (thanks to wellsjs suggestion). See screenshots provided in another thread, below.

One thing that I like to let you guys know, I noticed this morning when I woke up. The TH55, originally with power off while on the cradle, was turned on with WiFi connected. After an hour its power was still on and WiFi connected. Upon checking the 4cast setting, I found the "Disconnect" setting was set to "Never". I then set it to "After Refresh" to avoid battery draining in the future, when it is not on the cradle.

I disable the auto-update ("Refresh") for 4cast (and Agendus Pro) for several reasons, your experience being one of them. The other main reason is I don't want auto-update to launch when I'm not within wi-fi realm. I'd rather update when I choose rather than be aggravated by attempted connects when I'm unable to connect.

The other issue is security app bypass. TealLock, which I use, has an "allow app(s) to run when locked" feature, but IF you can get it to work successfully, you risk opening up security bypass should the device fall into the wrong hands. Others may be able to work out an auto-update pattern that works pretty well for them. I just haven't been able to. ;)

Actually, it's a little confusing, as you don't really need a plug in.

If you install the latest 4cast app., then go into datebk4, preferences, you can choose which progams you want to be displayed on your Today screen.

Put a check in the checkbox of the first app, then enter "cas4" as the application, and you'll see todays weather on your Today screen in datebk6!

Tap on the weather, and you'll launch 4cast!

Been looking at this.
Problem is ZLauncher has this plugin policy:
Unless I misunderstood things, it allocates a fixed height line for all plugins, and they have to share it's width.

So - only if 4cast is the ONLY plugin you will use, then I will be able to show the whole 5 day forecast.
Seems to me this would be quite a limitation for most people using plugins, and I hate to spend time developing a complicated feature people will eventually not use...

What do you say ?

Regarding DateBk6 - different app, different limitation:
The DateBk6 plugin only allows a single line height area, just enough for a line of text, so I can nt fit in both icons and text...

Anyway - the way I see it -
I know it can be an option, it can even be automatic (I can tell if I have enough space for it), but - i am guessing most people who use ZL plugins will want to use other plugins as well, so - if only a few (real few) users will ever use the "full line forecast" - no point in putting in the development time for it, and then having to explain to all those "angry" users why they cant see the full line plugin like they see on the web site/ads.

(and most of all - I hate saying to users - "that's not my fault - blame the other guy" - even if it's true)

I already use 4cast as my only ZL plugin because more than one is too crowded, so I wouldn't mind if it took up more space with a week view. I'd like to be able to keep the current view as an option, as I mostly use it for a quick reference of what the weather's like at the moment, and go to the app itself if I need more info. I've mentioned it on TreoCentral, but I'd really like to be able to switch between the day's forecast and "now". A button in the plugin to toggle between the two would be great.

I've got 29 days of my trial left on 4cast and I'm hoping to see a 320x480 version before the trial is up. A suggestion would be that you look at adding atomic clock timesync autoupdates as the Palmarysoft developer has for the PalmaryClock/Wireless edition. ;)

Plus, when do you think that you will have an autoupdate/320x480 version of 4stocks, and will you have a DB6/ZL plugin for it? :D

Got one too many atomic clocks already (one from WorldMate via HotSync and satellite clock via CC5 GPS).

I am using a Clie TH55 and am also getting a reset whenever I now
enter the Today View. I'm not sure if it had something to do with
trying to set a 4cast link or not. It was fine until I set the
4cast link in P8, and the system started reseting. Today was my
default view. Then I upgraded to P9, and it was still reseting. I
deleted 4cast with no difference. I was able to set my default view
to the Daily, but I still can't go to the Today view.

Update: I can now go into the Today view, but "4cas" is no longer listed as a link. Anyone else having problems with 4cast and DB6? I am using the latest 4cast v1.65 (26) and am thinking about buying the product, but not if it causes DB6 to reset.

I spoke too soon about this. On the next day after doing such exercise, the 4Cast was stuck on closing the weather.yahoo.com connection, after schedule daily "Refresh All". I just saw a frozen blank weather screen for hours. Spent most of the day to track what have caused it. Went as far as doing a hard reset and restoring a good working MSBackup file. Finally solved the problem by simply removing such 320x320 apps listed in CodeDiver.

This morning the scheduled 4Cast Refresh went automatically without any problem.

When I turn off the 4cast plugin then the gap at the bottom is filled with data. I don't know if DB6 is making room for all three available plugin slots when only one is active or not.

The "size" of the 4cast icons in DB6 is fine. I simply meant that I would like to see the same "style" (picture) of icons that are used in 4cast also used in DB6 only in the plugin size.

1. In the latest 4cast version (at www.shsh.com/beta), the size of the icons should match the font selected, so it should not run over the lines below it.

2. Not much of a graphic designer, so could not make an exact smaller version of the 4cast internal icons that looked clear enough on the plugin line.

3. There might be an option for two lines plugin in the future.

I've found the answer. I didn't know that it was the creator ID to use and had been putting "4cas" instead of "casa4". I got the creator ID from Trackerdog.

This is doing my head in. I'm on a T5, have a registered version of 4cast 1.65 (027) and have downloaded a trial of DateBk6 (version 6.0a, pA). I have all the boxes under 2day ticked in 4cast and I have entered "4cas" in the add-in part of DB6's Today prefs. I have got time to next alarm right at the bottom, alongside the different display options. I have got only today's appointments listed, and have the time to next full moon (plus icon), then a blank line then my Versamail info.

The blank line is where 4cast should be showing, and disappears when I untick it in DB6 prefs.

What is going on????

I'm going to take what undoubtedly will be the minority view here. DateBk6's today view is just that.... a synopsis of what is on the plate that day. To go into more depth one switches to other views: weekly, monthly, whatever. That said the integration of 4cast within the Today view is consistent in providing a very succinct weather synposis for that single day. If I need more data to include forecasts for the next few days I simply tap the weather line in DateBk6's Today view to go to 4cast. A left press to the TX's 5-way navigation pad returns me to DateBk6's Today view.

So the notion of having multiple day forecasts in the DateBk6 Today view strikes me as a foul. However being able to have multiple forecasts as part of a customized launcher view I do appreciate and understand. Frankly I'd love to be able to grab 4Cast data and place it in one of the layout modules in AppShelf but I don't see that as ever happening :(

Nice improvements! Feature set keeps getting richer and richer. I have not and will not use the auto update feature because my device is cradled quite a bit. Especially sometimes I forget and leave it in the cradle all night. IF I had the auto update set, the device, even though it would disconnect after the update, would remain on all night.

I schedule Resco Backup to run at 4 a.m. every day. It has a "Turn off after scheduled backup" check box. When I forget and leave my TH55 cradled, it gets turned off! Can you add that feature for 4cast?

The other issue I have that prohibits me from scheduling every X hours is what if I'm not in wifi coverage at the appointed time? If I recall at one point there was a "hang" problem. What happens in the current version if I don't have wireless access at the update time?

I have the same "hang" problem and now turn off the auto update (uncheck the Refresh every x hours/days). Manual refresh works great BTW.

Cool! When that gets finished, I may very well look at & purchase it. I like the integration with DateBk6, but having a T5 (or T3 or any other Palm without a persistent Internet connection, or at least one not requiring me to eject SD card/insert wifi card/eject wifi card/insert SD card) I do need a hotsync update facility.

Noting the comments here about the auto-update feature, personally I'm very pleased that Shimon included it. I use it each morning to update at 5am via WiFi and have yet to have any issues. For me it really adds a tremendous amount of utility to the application.

I would however like the option to select what weather information source 4Cast polls but I seem to recall that being raised some time ago by someone else with a response indicating that such a user option feature would require significant code with corresponding increase in application size. So despite my not being overly fond of Yahoo Wx as a source, I find this application to be great. The integration with DateBk6 is also a tremendous plus :) !

I'll use this HotSync Auto-refresh at work, as I don't have wireless option there and use the wireless manual refresh at home.

The 4cast wireless manual refresh at home is very handy now as I usually get WorldMate's atomic clock synchronization and The Weather Channel update via wifi at home in the morning before going to work. The problem with WorldMate is it would not disconnect the WiFi afterwards. I used to disconnecting it by launching NetMon and tap the disconnect icon in Netmon. Now I just need to refresh 4Cast after WorldMate updates, which will update the 4Cast and disconnect WiFi automatically.

Installed the new beta, but doesn't seem to be working for me. Hotsync window says Syncing 4Cast Conduit for a split second, but nothing makes it to the palm.
Preferences are set for Hotsync refresh. Any suggestions?

The sync time is not very long even when successful, about 1 sec. Here are all my settings for you to compare with one that IS WORKING:

"Refresh all" - not checked
"Hotsync" - selected
"every" - 1 hour
"at:" - N/A
"Disconnect:" - After refresh
"Show text forecast" - checked
"Show forecast time from Yahoo" - checked (optional)
"Plugins:" - Rotate all (2day only) - checked (probably doesn't matter with 2day prog.)
"Show:" - icon, time, name - all selected (if you use ZL plugin)
"< len:" - 10

Tap on "Log" and enable. After a hotsync that should give some insight if you still have a problem.

P.S. Followup on hotsync log. I can't get it to do anything, i.e. it's blank after both a hotsync and wireless sync? :confused:

Thanks for your post, but it still is not updating via the hotsync conduit. The only option I'm unable to match is the Auto-refresh "at" setting, which must be set at a specific time rather than N/A (this is on a T|X, btw). My inclination is to think that it shouldn't even be a factor since that is a setting applicable to wireless auto-refreshing. Anybody with a T|X get this new beta to work?

I've been using 4Cast for quite some time now and love the integration with DateBk6. I D/Led the newest beta described above and installed it. I normally have 4Cast set up to auto refresh 6 cities via WiFi at 5am each morning. With the new preferences panel I now also added HotSync updating. This I also do via WiFi with my laptop. This is the second day I've had the new beta installed and it seems that instead of updating each and every hotsync, the daily option I have for the regular WiFi to internet refresh impacts in that only the first hotsync of the day (e.g 4:30 pm after work) results in a Wx refresh. I would like to have things refreshed if I happen to hotsync a few hours after my first of the evening (meaning every time I hotsync as the refresh takes literally only a few seconds). Maybe I'm missing something but I suspect my use of WiFi for both internet direct and hotsync refreshes may need a bit of refinement in later beta releases. Dunno. Shimon monitors most sites so maybe he'll weigh in to clarify what I'm finding. Regardless, this is a great app

My settings:

I don't have "refresh all" checked as I don't want automated updates, but I do get updates with every hotsync. I haven't tried wi-fi hotsyncing since installing this release. You should test regular hotsync and see if it updates every sync.

No joy. Just tried that and it didn't help.

BTW "refresh all" simply means refresh all the cities and not just the primary selected.

Turning off the "wireless" option didn't change things although during hotsync I saw the "updating device" message, then I think a number "1" but no dialog boxes showing each city being updated as I have seen when the hotsync option works.

I'm starting to wonder. Shimon added the hotsync capability for users without WiFi connectivity. I don't know that he expected someone to use both direct and hotsync WiFi modes for refreshing the Wx information. I'm sure it'll all get worked out in time :)

I did find too on the Yahoo! DateBk forums where some issues like mine were tied to where the con4cast.dll file is located on the desk/laptop. The conduit would fail and hence no updates if the dll file wasn't located correctly. Don't think that applies for me as I didn't relocate the dll file, just upgraded the conduit.

- Added an option to prevent 4cast from trying to access information via wireless (so it does not keep trying to access WiFi or the likes).

- Also updated the HotSync Conduit to save some logging entry in the HotSync log (for debugging).

2 things I notice about 4Cast refresh via HotSync:
1. The 1st HotSync would only install the app and conduit, so no refresh. You need to HotSync it again. The 2nd. HotSync refresh 4Cast. You'll see a flash of the 4Cast popup in PC during HotSync. Click on the HotSync icon in the bottom tool bar of your PC and make sure that the Custom/4Cast Conduit shows "Synchronize the files".
2. If you have some kind of firewall/security that requires you to enter username and password before you go out to the internet (like my office network), make sure you do that before HotSync. If you can go to Google before HotSync, then the coast is clear. Otherwise 4Cast won't refresh. This happens also to WorldMate.

I don't seem to be able to HotSync the latest info into my TX. It keeps the old temp that I hot synced early this AM.
I also read somewhere that you could go the the Yahoo weather page and enter the last few digits of the URL and it would sync to that weather page. Well it won't.
Any help, please?

alanHotsync works great everytime for me on the TH55. It worked that way in earlier versions. Now you can type in the city name only (no state abbrv.) and tap Add. If it is a city in the Yahoo Weather database system, it should show up (possibly a number of cities with same name, but different states). Select it and it will be added to the default list and can be used. ;)

Try copying the con4cast.dll file to your conduits subfolder and see if that helps. There were some comments elsewhere about the conduit not working properly to permit hotsync updates because of where this file was located (normally in the con4cast folder). This trick worked for some others so I'd think it's worth a shot.

What some opined is that if you unpack the zip file and install from your desktop instead of placing the unzipped folder in your programs directory before installing, there might be an issue with the conduit finding the support files to function correctly.

To all those having trouble:

1. Delete 4cast from your handheld.

2. Get the latest version of the conduit (1.06) from www.shsh.com/beta

3. Run the installation exe. Then HotSync.

4. This should install the conduit version 1.06 (you can check that in the conduit preferences insode "Custom" dialog of the HotSync manager).

5. After that first HotSync, 4cast should be installed on your handheld.
Launch it, and enter the cities you want (no need for ZIP or additional codes - just the city name).

6. Now HotSync. The consuit should popup and show the cities it finds and updates, or - if your city name has many matching cities - display a list of them for you to choose yours.

7. If after that HotSync you cant see the correct city info in 4cast - email me (contact(at)shsh.com) the HotSync log.

The "true for..." time is taken from the actual data from Yahoo.
I know in my area their server only updates 4 times a day, so the time there can change only then.

What city are you trying to read ?
You can check by directing a "regular" internet browser to weather.yahoo.com...

alanCheck out what the Yahoo Weather for Oakhurst says in your PC browser. If they match after a sync, then the issue is with Yahoo Weather. Shimon's app (4cast) can't pull down what isn't there! Duh! (meant for me! :D )

I've been doing that. Even with the temp changes, It doesn't seem to update more than once a day.
