Looking for a basic MPEG video editor

I'm looking for a program (preferably free) that will crop and splice MPEG-1 files. Does anyone have a program that they would recommend?

I'm not sure of any free app that will do this. Even my pro appilcations won't work with mpegs in their native form, since they are a streaming media file.

I normally split the mpegs I work on, than convert the audio into an AIF and the video into a raw Quicktime. From there I reassemble it and edit.

I would do a search on Versiontracker.
