View Full Version : LifeDrive delicate?

Was riding my motorcycle yesterday, stopped to pay the toll and somehow I got the headphone wire tangled in the mirror and the LifeDrive was flung down hard (about 5 ft) onto the concrete (really hard, big smacking sound <even through my helmet>). The stunned moments passed and then I realised I could still hear the LifeDrive playing my music through its internal speaker. I couldnt believe it wasnt,

1) in pieces and

2) still worked

These are machines are practically bullet proof !

Holy Schmoly, batman! That's not a test I'D care to repeat!!! So much for "hard-drive fragility". :D

you're VERY VERY lucky...the lifedrive has a rotating hard drive and it IS prone to breaking with shock......

do not be surprised at some bad sectors now and possibly some crumbling starting. Exchange it if you can, and read up on what happens with shock to a rotating hardDrive

I didnt know that about the fragility of the drive while rotating. I keep my songs on a 1GB SD card and play them from that so maybe that was a big factor in having no problems after the drop. Guess I was just real lucky.

Bloody hell, !!

I dropped mine from the height of about 2 feet and the touch screen would never correctly register ever again!

...luckily I sent it back to the company I bought it from and told them 'it didn't work' and they replaced it no questions but from now on...? wrapped in cotton wool!!

Jaysus!!! Blow me down ... after a 5 feet free fall (Einstein Could be right:) ) and your LD is still working fine with the rotating HD...Man!!! I will say you've got a real piece of equipment.
I will be glad if you can post a testimony 2 weeks from now and let us know how its going but until then...Keep playing BURZUM...;)

Since you were listening to music off of an SD card, the hard drive was inactive and thus had parked. According to Hitachi, the hard drive can take a 200-G shock when parked. Assuming (that is a very important word in this sentence) that the mounting of the hard drive will provide at least a 1-mm deceleration distance, then from my math, when parked, the hard drive can take a 2-meter drop onto a hard surface.

However, when the hard drive is active, it can only take a 20G shock. With the same above assumptions, this is equivalent to only a 0.2-meter drop.

Mine fell out of my case from about 5 feet onto pavement. It was off at the time and sustained some scratches around the SD slot.

But otherwise it's fine. No problems in the month since then. The scratches are a little disturbing since it was perfect until that moment. Argh.

my lifedrive has dropped out of my pocket twice lately while playing music. luckily its fall was cushioned by my leather case.

Its nice to know that these things are tough ...
