Hi Folks,

Can anybody tel me how to replace ROM applications in SJ33 US version?

Like say I wanna swap Address Book with Address Uno and additionally put Notepad there like that. Want to remove certain things like the PictureGear and CLIE Demo.

So that I will have them the way I want it ever after HARD RESET

IS there any tools since this does not have user cofigurable ROM area.

Please Help.

Jack Sprat would be the program for doing this, although we are not sure whether it will be possible with the SJ33 (USA version or otherwise).

First off, you should figure out wether or not you have a flash ROM. Apparently some US versions don't. Find a copy of the newest Jack Flash 3.04 beta, I think that's the current one to do this. If you do have a Flash ROM, then wait for Jack Sprat compatibility. Other than that, I'd suggest picking up a cheep 16meg Mem stick to use for backing up your RAM.

Well, now aperently my much loved US version of SJ33 doesn't have an user configurable FlashROM area. (Got it from CircuitCity) See the attached file warning.

Now my second question is where the hell these Addressbok and other stuff come from. They doesn' show up it any of the file viewers I've tried.

Where these are come from when I do a hardreset. Is it a separate ROM chip that we can't access? Then how does SONY put their stuff there.

It least is there a way to delete certain things from there like the CLIE demo and the pictures included.

Give me directions...please..

I believe that how Sony gets them there is that they write them to a chip that can only be written to once and then it is Read Only Memory. whereas Flash can be written to over and over again.

Actually, it is part of the OS, where certain areas of the ROM are earmarked for built-in software. When you startup, even from a hard reset, the OS knows where to find this software in the ROM.

When JackFlash does a check for unused ROM, it only checks the unmarked areas to see how much space there is (so don't expect much).

OTOH JackSprat is a bit more advanced in that it will remove the built-in code from the marked areas and make that space available to the user. Danger is that any mistake and you could wipe out the OS. Also, warranty would be void.

JackSprat comes with a utility to save a ROM image and re-flash your pda in case of a slip-up, but I am a worrier, so am not to keen to try it...

Well, if your Clie doesn't have a flash ROM, there really isn't any way to remove the apps (other than tearing the Clie apart, removing the ROM, finding a new ROM that is flashable and soldering the chip back on).
