View Full Version : MP3 Ripping

I've tried a number of programs to rip songs from CDs to MP3s to play on a NR70-V (with a SanDisk 128MB Memory Stick) - some work and some don't. They all claim to convert to MP3 format but not all MP3 formats seem to work on with the Memory Stick

When I rip, should I be designating the bit rate (other than 128) or some other settings or does anyone have a recommended program to do this encoding? Thanks

Now I'm no expert but I use FreeRIP and have never had a problem

You'll probably get more informed responses from other users but it's something you can try in the short term.

Musicmatch jukebox (www.musicmatch.com) rips too, but the free version is sorta slow. I'll have to check out freerip, it sounds good.

MusicMatch jukebox works fine for me - lets you choose transfer rate and play MP3s on your PC. don't have any complaints about speed (or lack thereof).

I've experienced problems with replaying of mp3 music encoded at 320 kB/s, Clie Audio player indicated copyright violation or non-compatibility, however lower bitrates work OK. I use Creative PlayCentre 2 for ripping.

I haven't had any problems as far as bitrate goes (from 64 to 196). However, the sampling rate must be 44.1.

I use roxio software that came with my cd burning-software for ripping, works fairly well, for re-encoding mp3's i always use DBpoweramp, works well for me, and allows me to select sampling rate, unlike some programs, which cahnge the sampling rate automatically at lower bitrates.

Thanks to everyone who res[ponded (this forum is a GREAT resource!) I used dbPowerAmp - works great!
I had trouble with FreeRip and MusicMatch due to the sampling rates they used for recording (and I couldn't figure out how to change)

many programs default to VBR (variable bit rate) which is not a problem on most windows based players.... however, I do not think the clie is set up for VBR.

I used to use Cdex from sourceforge.net however, it didn't work when I upgraded my machine... *sigh* so I bought musicmatch.

I use Musicmatch as well as Cdex.

I use MusicMatch Jukebox as well. Until I get a Memory Stick Pro (or hopefully a 1 gig CF card :D) I rip all my CDs at 96kbps. You can fit about 25% more tunes on a stick if you don't mind the slight drop in quality. I usually use my NX70 through my car stereo and at the gym, so this doesn't bother me at all.

I wish Sony would upgrade their player to support VBR as well as Windows Media, in addition to a ROM upgrade to Palm OS 6, but hey, I can dream, can't I?

Good luck!

I use MusicMatch VBR all the time to rip MP3's for my Clie. They work just fine for me.

dbPowerAmp is the one I use these days (be sure to download the free add-on that allows it to read CD files).

The only downside at all is that it doesn't query CDDB to find out the title of the tracks that I am ripping, like some rippers do. But, it's no big deal to type in the name, since I've already ripped most of the tracks from most of my CDs.

I use Cdex sometimes, if i'm ripping for listening on the computer (most common) I just rip with windows media player because it finds names for me, and the sound quality is quite good.

VBR works fine on my NR, i've heard it doesn't work on the OS5 series devices tho.

VBR does not work on my NX. I started using CDex to convert my CDs to mp3 and I couldn't get the files to play untill I changed to fixed rate encoding.

MusicMatch Jukebox is great, and can convert an entire CD to MP3's in under 2 minutes.

If you have a 48x read-speed cd drive and a 2+ ghz CPU machine, it will only take MusicMatch Jukebox around 1 min 30 secs to convert an entire CD into MP3s, at 128k bit / 44.1k frequency.

The MP3's will sound nearly as good the original CD. It's very hard to hear any loss in sound quality at 128K bits rate.

I have MusicMatch Jukebox Deluxe Version 7.5 (which is their latest version).

I also have Magix MP3Maker Gold, which is another excellent program for MP3's, and I get the same MP3 conversion performance from that as well (around 1 min 30 secs for entire CD). Magix is a little more "user friendly" for converting CD's to MP3, but MusicMatch Jukebox has a better MP3 library management utility.

I would highly recommend either program.

Some CD to MP3 converters take longer, because they first transfer the entire CD to the hard-drive in the original ".WAV" format (which can take 20 minutes), and then they convert the .WAV to .MP3 from the hard-drive files. MusicMatch Jukebox and Magix MP3Maker both convert from the .WAV to .MP3 directly from the CD, so their conversion method is much faster.
