Two-fisted entertainment in tonight's podcast with special guest Tyler Faux! In this 84 minute monster podcast (free up some on your memory card!) we cover: Google Talk and Google Sidebar, the delay in Windows Mobile 5 for the hx4705, can I keep my new Treo, why redirecting audio to the Bluetooth headset shouldn't be impossible (and how one young New Yorker might be convinced to work on a fix!), Opera Mini, Kmaps and other great Treo-centric Palm applications, this week's 1SRC editorial and finally, the nature of podcasting itself. Block out some time and get comfortable, this is... the 1SRC Podcast! [details (http://www.1src.com/?m=show&id=1204)]
As I'm listening to the podcast and hearing Jeff say "what's inside that counts" ... I wonder how he'd feel and what he'd say when he discovers all these are native in OS X.
Nice podcast, Jeff!

I was in your position Jeff but I was the assistant of the guy that ordered the Blackberries for the NY Office. The reason the company I work for gave me a blackberry was due to I needed it for contact after hours. They wanted me to familiarize myself with the device in order to be able to come up with solutions to issues users have encountered. What justified my keeping my Blackberry is that I actually created a guide for my company on how to upgrade the OS on older Blackberries to v4.0 to work correctly with Exchange Server 2003. Due to Palm doesn't have this ability to upgrade the OS on the actual device, thats not an option. Are you on the floor constantly and need to be contacted constantly, you can use this as an excuse. This is the way I justified my holding my Blackberry.
As for Bluetooth v1.1 transfering media via a Bluetooth headset, it might not be possible just like its impossible to remove the white border from CLIE screens. If it is possible to remove the white border from CLIE screens, then someone please create a patch for this.
As for Opera Mini, its fast but yet, its like viewing a website on your cell phone with the page seperation. I found it to be very annoying and feel that using Netfront without images, is a better web experience.

26:41 Thanks for the mention/jab at me Jeff. Coming from someone who is so outspoken against and constantly the subject of personal attacks, I'm a bit disappointed.
And I guess your jab at me really is missing my point, as you seem to be endorsing warez. Are you? You "put it aside for the moment" and have yet to confront the issue.
If, as you say, I'm the only one who's concerned about the increasing acceptance of ignoring EULAs and copyright notices and the open discussion of warez, what does that say about our community?

I would like to quote what ptorrone has said about Goolge in a private mailing list:
"overall, i think google is slowly reducing windows to a collection of device drivers to run google apps on."
and
"i tend to think they're quietly working on the uber-package that ties all these together while we all pound on the 'betas'."
I agree.

Some reasons your company should get a Treo for you Jeff:
1. You need to make a wireless (bluetooth) solution for the company so everyone syncs wirelessly (locally), print, and run file copy/transfer apps.
2. For configuring and testing dial-up networking.
3. For training of Goodlink's features.
4. For testing new apps that can be used for the company -- eg. Nav apps, IM apps, custom apps, etc

Okay, on the google sidebar:
I tend to LOATHE these kind of apps.
However I am Google-ized, as this is possibly the coolest one of these things I've ever seen, if I've seen one! I wish i had more time to fiddle with it before I have to go to work. -something for later! :)
I've also installed Google Talk, as it seems like a great alternative to MSN. ;)
NICE!
EDIT

BT Audio is very possible, but it requiers one thing - speed. I had BT audio on my computer to my headset, but i have a few gighz of processing power to spare. My Pocket PCs were hackable to force the audio out into the headset, but they also had a real BT stack built in them and the headset profile was disabled because the devices did not have enough speed. Resulting audio sounded like a very tinny am radio.
Now Palm. It has something, but its so limited i would not call it a stack, It can connect to phones, and computers, and thru computers to networks. I'm also going to assume it can connect to gps devices with a BT serial port, But since its stack is so invisible, non-existance, i'm going to say it dosent have a stack, Its just got these connections you can hook in to.
So someone would have to find a place to jack in code to the audio driver, and write a new driver that fakes a BT headset profile and send that to a BT headset.
Hell, all mighty palm should have this in either the T5 SDK or the LD sdk, But i gave up on palm programming, dont know if any of these sdks even exist.

Honestly, I'm ambivalent about warez. In this case, I really don't believe it's problem. There's a difference, I think, between using something like Picsel Browser or Opera Mini and actually cracking a shareware app so you don't have to pay for it.

I already figured as much, but it's nice to see you finally state your official position. I respect your opinion, and while I disagree with it, I'm not going to take a jab at you.
I am not ambivalent about warez, and I don't agree that there is enough of a distinction to justify ignoring EULAs and copyrights (which, by the way, you didn't have any trouble raising when it comes to Google News).

OK, so I fastforwarded because I can't take that screeching noise. Yes Jeff, I know I'm picky. What I really wanted to hear was your discussion of podcasting. I see where you're coming from but your missing something. The shorter format is better for some podcasts, but the beauty of podcasts is they can all be different. No two need to be done the same way. Personally I think a shorter format works best for 1src, it's really about news and I think it's more effective when it's on topic and to the point. I say you try "microcasting" the 1src cast for a week and see how it works.
I do think people need to be playing more with the format of podcasting, there are lots of possiblities and we see very few people trying different formats. The bottom line is palying with the medium is good, but I disagree with the statement that anyone has been doing it wrong. How can there be a wrong way to tackle a creative task like this?

Anyone catch the news that Theres a rumor on Wall Street that PALM is buying back PalmSource.
This link is to an interview:
http://www.marketwatch.com/tvradio/playerfull.asp?siteid=yhoo&dist=yhooBB&guid=%7B23FD2DE5%2D22F7%2D4ADF%2D8851%2DF23363BC3A27%7D
(oh yeah, skip about 2/3 to 3/4 of the audio, till u hear them start talking about palmsource).
Note that PalmSource;s stock has moved up about 20% in the past 3 days. Yes, it's just a rumor and people will say anything to make money, but again it's possible there may be some validity to this. Palm is at CTIA this weekend, if my memory serves.
I remember hearing or reading that analysts valued Palmsource at $160 million and that is where Palmsource's stock has remained most of today.
Just FYI, it's got relevance to palm economy.
I wrote an article about 4 days ago (about why palm must stay with palmsource) and submitted it to Reggie, where is it? Did it suck that bad?
If your tempted to rush out and buy PSRC stock I certainly wouldn't recommend it, this is just a rumor and it seems to be fairly valued.

As per request, reasons for your company to purchase and let you keep your treo 650:
(1) 24/7 Availability- They can call you whenever if they need you
(2) Customized to fit your job - Allows you to schedule yourself for maximum efficiency
(3) You'll leave them alone :)
The podcast was long, but very informative. Already have all those apps, work well. One that you suggested last week, KSLight keeps my KB off after a reset, don't know how to change the settings. I rather have 1 hour podcasts once week then 10 minute when spread accross hours. It'd be like having News spread around on TV whenever theres something and instead of at a certain time. If you did 5 10 minutes a day and sum it up on Wed., that'd be good. :) The news also does this, if its something real important, they'll broadcast it over anything and sum up later :)

FYI, regarding the inability of the Treo to redirect audio via BT headset... as others have probably stated, this is because the 650 lacks the A2DP profile from it BT stack.
I know JK is not asking for stereo BT headphone support, but there is a bounty over at Treocentral which stands at about $700 bucks currently for a A2DP patch for the Troe 650:

Oh forgot to mention, there is NO need to pay $15 bucks for an app like Freedom when there are free alternatives like Headcold for the Treo that do that exact same thing!

Jeff. re: your employer funded Treo. I suggest you get a new boss if your boss can't see the value of giving you something that makes you happy! The Treo 650 really is a fantastic little device :)
Edit: the good news is that Treos are cheaper in the US than the UK

Wasn't really meant for you folks, the rational and polite Pocket PC users. I kinda meant that for the trolls.
Problem is you sound like a troll when you do it. Just ignore those guys and leave them out of the podcasts completely. We are all aware of the crap some PPC users spread around and I would just prefer to see them left out of the Palm podcasts.
Speaking of sounding like a troll, enough with bashing the Clie already. :) I know you were joking around, but someone using a T5 really has no business poking fun at the TH-55. ;)

For what it is worth, I enjoy lengthier podcasts. I just wish that if I was listening to a longer cast I could somehow terminate my listening enjoyment and then pick up where I last left off. That way I could listen to 10 minutes or 85 minutes depending on my time allotment.
I also enjoy some lighthearted moments as well as some jest. These are suppose to be enjoyable ;)

I don't mind you mentioning the trolls, lol. Look over at palmaddict today, there is a windows mobile user axim x50v using styletap. It's a windows mboile app that lets you run palm os apps, how sweet:) I wrote an article on it, seems like they want to switch but they still miss the palm os, so much so that someone in their world came up with this application. I say if you want the palm os why run it on a windows mobile device? There's screenshots of it as well. What a compliment to the palm os,lol.

Great podcast, guys! I listen to podcasts while I work, so I like longer ones because they get me through my shift. The longer the better. But it might not be too bad to spend a week trying out the idea of mini-casts to see how it goes.
Jeff, I notice that whenever you have a guest on a podcast, whenever no one's talking, there's silence, but when someone speaks, there's a faint hissing noise in the backgound. Also, there seems to be something going on with the audio capture, because sometimes it would stop for 3-5 seconds, or it would jump a second or two forward for no apparent reason. Just wanted to let you know.
Does anyone know of something like the Google desktop search that works for Linux? Or a way to get Java on my Zodiac to use Opera Mini?
Sharkk717
08-26-2005, 01:57 PM
how about mini-casts and a compilation cast each wednesday that's just a big mp3 file containing all the week's casts? that way, if you want to listen to it just once a week, you can do that.

08-28-2005, 01:10 PM
About the length: now that I use TCPMP for podcast listening I can stop it and come back to it anytime I want so length is not a concern. I like the idea of a "pod-blog" where people could just blog short commentary daily. If that would evolve, I'd have to really sit down and implement a sync system like Jeff suggested with Itunes and synctoy and whatever else the steps where (thank goodness for archives  )
Woody Woodpecker : The originals have always outshined the latter-day versions. That particular episode was extremely funny with all the literal translations of his slang. Classic Tom & jerry and Looney Tunes had the smae humor and have never been appropriately duplicated.
Helpdesk Treo: Why hasn't anyone mentioned VNC remote desktop control? With a Treo I think that would be an obvious choice. I used Winhand while it was free and had a lot of fun controlling my desktop remotely ( all music in the house is linked/played thru the PC so I could control playlists via my handheld anywhere in the house). Isn't there a plethora of uses you could come up with for remote access?
I've noticed that your podcasts have increased in quality - its easier to hear and understand you now. If I play these in Realplayer in my car's stereo I have to jack the volume WAY up to hear you well. Core is a bit better. Have you changed the production of the podcasts?

Your gmail account. It runs through google, so that's what it needs. Once you get passed that, your good to go and map away! I love that app, the guys at treocentral.com are crazy with that stuff :) Anyways, I don't think I would like a clamshell treo but i'm open to anything. It's current design is top notch, imo, and is awesome in almost everything, but fails in one design flaw- You have to take the battery cover off to do a soft reset.
