Advise please

Well My NX 80 died again for the third time. It will cost $145 to get it fixed at Sony in San Diego. I have several assecories for it, but don't want to keep paying to get it fixed. What do you guys think. Should I get fixed again, buy the Treo 650 or the the life drive or T 5. Suggestions please.

I have a Treo 600 and in reality it is a very different beast to the NX or any full Palm PDA.

Whether you choose the Treo over the other PDAs you cited depends highly on whether you want a phone or a PDA. The Treo regardless of being a Palm device is first and foremost a brilliant phone. (One of the best.)

There are some good benefits to having such a good phone. It's data carrying capacity is excellent and as an MP3 player superb but it's usability to view documents and video or play games is limited by it's small screen. (Half that of the NX and probably lower quality.)

Even though the Treo has a tiny keyboard it is far more usable than the NX. In some ways it has been better thought out than the NX series. (The NX73 keyboard sucks big time.)

As to the other PDAs you mentioned I can't say but it does depend on what you want to do.

I doubt I will get another Palm device after my NX dies. It is just too proprietry even if it is better than the alternative operating systems in many ways.

There are far more peripherals at cheaper prices for Pocket PC devices.. though I am not always impressed with the designs of many of the PPC PDAs themselves.

If Palm does move towards Linux and if it isn't just a crippled version I might take another look then.. For now though i like my NX73 as it's a great video player.

Whether you should get your NX80 repaired for $145 though.... It's up to you but in comparison to buying a second user NX80 off ebay that is not too bad a price.. NX80 sells for between $230 and $300 US. on ebay.

It's just whether you want to save your money and go for a newer device.... you might get some money off ebay for the dead NX80 for it's screen (if that works) and or accessories... choices choices.



If you haven't already then go take a look at the myTreo (http://mytreo.net/) site and forums.

It's an excellent place with a great community.. (that is another difference for the Treo.. the Treo community is slightly different to the general Palm PDA community.. draw from a wider crowd I think..)

The Treo 650 has some better features over my Treo 600. Bluetooth for one.

As phones go it's the professionals choice... No doubt i'll also see you over at the MyTreo forum soon :D
