I wanted to show what Opera Mini looks like running on a Tungsten T3. Here are screenshots from my soon to be ebayed Tungsten T3 of both palmaddict, and 1src. My two favorite Palm websites. I am really digging it on the larger screen handhelds.

Wow, that doesn't look better than NF or Blazer or Web Pro. How is the rendering speed though.

The quality is not so great though compared to NetFront. Not trying to burst your bubble, just saying it as I see it.

Your not bursting my bubble, lol, the quality isn't as great as netfront, I had a ux50, but netfront was too slow in my opinion. I prefer webpro, and used the hacked webpro on my ux-50 to get around it. Yeah, picture quality is not great on it, but the speed is worth it to me to just read things. Ya gotta remember this isn't even supposed to be working, lol. So I am happy with it. My choice of web browser is blazer, or web on my treo 650, but Opera Mini is onto something here. In terms of optimization they got it, but they are that way with all their browsers desktop, handheld.

The reason why the picture quality is so bad in the above screenshots is because soccrnj80 did not put Opera in high-res mode, thus the low-res images. For high resolution, go into system preferences then into IBM Java VM, then check the setting, "use high resolution coordinates"

oh, ok I will give that a shot. Thanks for the tip.

OK, soccrjn. I've searched around on the Opera site (Opera's one of my favorite desktop browsers), but can't find a PalmOS version. It must be available (you run it on a T3) - where is it?

This is what your looking for, all the directions are found here including the Opera Mini .prc link to mytreo.net. Just read the instructions, they are very good, and easy.

How did you get it to go full screen? Mine only works in 320 x 320 :(

It worked right off the bat, I followed his instructions and beamed all the prc's from my treo to my T3 using filez.

Are you using the HiRes Treo 650 file?
What Java VM are you using? Mine says J9 2.1 ARM (20040123)

Yes, am using the hires treo 650 file. I beamed the exact prcs that are included in this link.

The latest version of the JVM and the one I used to get Opera Mini running is J9 2.2 ARM (20040706). This is available from Palm’s WebSphere Everyplace Micro Environment Download page (http://www.palm.com/us/support/jvm/download.html).

There seems to be questions from several people about running Opera Mini on a T3. Using Timothy Luoma's instructions as a base, I have posted, with a few screenshots, how I got Opera Mini to run on a T3 at my website (http://lesliefranke.com/).

Got the Java update. Running very nicely in full screen now. Thanks :)

opera does load very fast, however the pages don't look as good as webpro. Ever since I stopped using the proxy in webpro browsing has been fine, though slow ;) . Will Netfront work on a T3 and how do I get it?

Yes opera still slow i think.
Well if u use webpro without proxy, it will slow.
but no problem if u access all the url that u want via

http://mobileleap.net/v2

and the page loading size is the same as small as when u use Proxy

Forgive me for my ignorance. I was wondering... how does it work as far as credit card numbers and the like when going through a proxy. If you pay for something or log on to your credit card account can someone steal the info more easily because you are going through a proxy? Also, does the company who owns the proxy have access to any info you send through it? How private is a proxy as far as where you go and what you do?

I'm not really sure. I don't do any shopping via my T3 though.

Thanks to all previous posters. Installed as recommended and results were:

1. Fast with free unlimited T-Mobil GPRS
I use the "free" GPRS version that requires use of the T-Mo proxy. This is bad on WebPro because then I cannot use the Palm/WebPro proxy, making pages load up slowly. In Java preferences, I put in the T-Mo proxy, and then Opera uses the norwegian proxy, and boy, welcome back to fast browsing! Loving it.

2. Gave it 8MB RAM and the maximum on the other memory allocation. This thing has 64MB, why scrimp?

3. Upon initial start, Opera Mini refused to hide the grafitti writing area, which I use the least possible. Tip: exit Opera Mini, and go right back in. Enjoy full-screen use.

4. Crashed once after 1 hr browsing. Will attempt to figure out what triggered it. Willing to live with it if necessary b/c the fast browsing would compensate.

5. Browser headers
Opera Mini announces to the world that I am a Treo 650. I am not. I realize this version was put in a .pdb configured for Treos.

6. Time on the bottom menu bar
Totally unnecessary on a Tungsten, unless the Tungsten can be coerced into hiding its own menubar (which I don't think is possible). Probably a Treo feature.

7. Did I say I love Opera Mini?
Beautiful, fast interface. Rather logical. Sure, it can be improved, but this is good enough for me already.

8. Instant "go back" to prior page. Why, pray you, did WebPro not do it? And I always gave WebPro the largest memory setting possible.

I will pay $$$ for a Tungsten-native version of Opera Mini

Cheers,

Xavier
