Hey gang. My VP has asked me to come up with the best way to enable the guys in the field to take pictures on the job sites and email them into the office at night. I first tried an NZ90 using the Nextel phone we already have as a wireless modem. It all worked fine, but the Nextel cost an extra $40/month to use as a modem. Is there a landline modem I could use with an NZ90, that wouldn't incur an additional monthly charge, or should we just go with the laptop and digital camera option?

I don't remember all the instructions, but there IS a CF modem that works. I wanna say that it's an Ambicon.
Search the forums - look for something like CF modems and the user name Pelaca. If I remember right, he wrote the drivers that make the whole she-bang work :)

So, with this, the guys in the field can take pictures with their NZ90s, go back to the hotel room at the end of the day, and hook up to the internet with this Ambicom modem, and email photos, excel spreadsheets, etc.?

yes
Yes, That is correct.
You might also want to look into using T-Mobile which are located in about every starbucks in the USA.

I looked into the T-Mobile thing; again, too expensive. So, one last question: there wouldn't be an additional charge going the Ambicom route? I mean, don't I need an ISP or something?
You need the SAME ISP which you are already using for laptops. There is no dialing up without a ISP.
Though, I am pretty sure that if you hand the guys a NZ and tell them they can also check their e-mail on it, they would positively figure out how to input the information from their home ISP. (smile)

fordse,
How do you use a Nextel phone as a modem? Is there a plug I would need to buy?
Thanks.

Yeah, I bought a $40 cable from Gomadic.com. Worked great!
