View Full Version : AcidImage vs SplashPhoto vs PhotoStand

I use PhotoStand on my NR70v for viewing my photos and for creating "slide shows" to show off my kids or my work or whatever. I love the full screen display and the background music and the fact that I can just click on my slide show and it starts.
However I have read practically only excellent reviews here for Acid Image and Splash Photo. I therefore downloaded Acid Image and have played around with it for a bit. I have not yet downloaded Splash Photo.
Although Acid Image looks good I can not find a way to create and save slide shows nor add music. When I download a JPEG file it downloads the original, which I assume is what it should do, which takes quite some time to load rather than converting it to a smaller format for the Clié which loads faster.
Before I download Splash Photo, and seeing as there are many of you who seem to have experience with all 3 of these programs, can someone tell me the advantages and disadvantages of each? Do I really need to have all 3?
Thanx in advance!

I've used just about all the Graphic Apps there are, over a period of 3 years. Another you might want to check out is FirePad's Fireviewer.
My advice would be to keep Photostand as it does a good job on the slideshows (my fav. is the analogue clock with Calendar).
I'd also keep Acid Image as nothing else comes close in regards to the ease you are able to import standard images of almost any size in their native format from your PC straight to the Clie. It is a great way for viewing JPEGS and such without having to muck about with a converter middleware program.

First, no, you don't need all three. Next, how do you want to use the app? If PhotoStand is doing all you need already (sounds like it), then I'd say save the money and just keep using that application. If it's lacking in some way, then maybe one of the other programs will fill the void.
I bought the SplashWallet suite (actually, got it free as part of a promo when I bought my Clie) and initially used SplashPhoto. However, I then stumbled across AcidImage and that's what I tend to use now. One thing I like about SplashPhoto is that you automatically see the entire photo. If you're showing off pictures of the kids or whatever, this is more convenient.
However, if you're trying to view detailed images (e.g., like maps) then AcidImage is nice because you can zoom way in. It's also nice that you can view images in their native format instead of having to go through a conversion process.
Personally, I never use the slide show feature in either AcidImage or SplashPhoto.
I can't really comment on how they compare to PhotoStand as I've never used it.

I'm using both SplashPhoto and AcidImage. Since they've been mention, why dont you try Album to go. I've it it before and its not bad. And its free too. http://www.palmgear.com/software/showsoftware.cfm?sid=56261720030114045639&prodID=13498

Wow, I never thought to give Acid Image a try since I already had Splash Photo (came with the splash suit), but now that I've tried it, I'm adding it to my collection. You can save over 50% of space using Acid Image since all Splash Photo converted files are around 326k. Splash Photo can view .jpg files, but you can't zoom in to adjust the clarity of the pictures. I'd recommend Acid Image before buying Splash Photo seperate from the Splash Wallet Suit. Since I've already bought the Splash Wallet Suit, I'll keep both installed. I've deleted Photostand since it doesn't utilize full screen mode, or does it? I forget.

I agree with buckethead, yishow is pretty good as a slideshow, plus you can advance forward and back to the next image without having to wait for the 10sec slideshow format

I also use Photostand for slideshows and AcidImage for "normal" picture viewing.
If you view native jgp-pictures with AcidImage the quality is very good. But the pictures use a lot of memory (500 kb per picture).

My SplashPhoto files are more like 50k, since I use Splashphoto desktop to convert them to jpg. True you can't zoom images on the Palm with SplashPhoto, but the desktop allows you to zoom and change brightness levels, contrast, etc before you save the photo to your Clie. Splashphoto jpg images are also perfect as back images for ZLauncher and probably YiShow also. I may be wrong, but I haven't been able to find a desktop component of AcidImage. By the way, Photostand does use full screen mode and also has some nice special effects, such as clock/calendar with image and music in background. I'm not knocking Acid Image, but some of your objections to the other two products appear unfounded.

Yes it does... automatically and by default. This is especially impressive on photos which are in "portrait" orientation rather than landscape.

You are correct Sebring. Please excuse my answering ignorantly. I seemed to have answered too soon without first observing the validity of my response. I must have overlooked the converting to .jpg option; its been a while since I've actually converted any pictures using SplashPhoto. I came accross Photostands ability to utilize full screen mode last night, but still don't have any need for it since I now have Splash Photo and Acid Image; although, I do like the music during slideshow feature. Anyway, thanks for the correction; I guess Splash Photo will still be my main family/friend picture album. I'll probably use Acid image for my bible maps/charts and things like that. So I guess my opinion has changed about choosing Acid Image over Splash Photo. They both have their uses, and again, it all depends on the needs of the individual.
