View Full Version : What are the chances of an NX with 32 meg of RAM?

I'm wavering on whether or not to keep my gunmetal NX70RV. It's a MAJOR investment and the main thing that I have a hard time with is the knowledge that, while it is the coolest PDA I've ever seen, it will be outdated very shortly. I can think of a lot of things I could spend $700 on (I'm including the cost of case, mem stick, etc.) that will last a lot longer or, at least, I won't feel the need or desire to upgrade so soon (killer car stereo, a new T.V., etc.) I'm trying to convince myself that it's worth keeping, but the limited amount of RAM is very frustrating. What do you think the chances are of an updated NX later this year or early next year, that has at least 32 meg of RAM? With my luck, I'll keep this unit and they'll soon announce an enhanced model with 32 or 64 meg of RAM, etc.

Your input is greatly appreciated...

I can say that a 32MB unit is EXTREMLY likley to be annouced this year, if not within a few months. Garmin has already announced a 32MB unit, and someone here at ClieSource said that there was something in OS5 that limited units to 16MB of RAM, but OS5.2 no longer has that limit. But if you wait this time, there will always be a new unit just a few months away with even cooler features, so you might not want to wait.

Whoa whoa whoa! I'm pretty sure that information is false, no offense. OS5x can't support more than 16mb of ram. Not until OS6 comes out will palms come out with more than 16mb of ram. So i'm guessin OS6 will come out Q3 or Q4, so look for some 32+mb palms by december i'm guessin, i dunno exactly when though. But they do need os6 for more than 16mb support.

Enjoy.

Also, as concerns memory, I was just talking to a friend at PalmSource today. Palm OS 5 as shipped by PalmSource to the OEMs like Sony only supports 16 MB of ROM and 16 MB of RAM. This is a legacy from OS4 and just hasn't been changed. Running on ARM processors, the 32 MB limit is gone, but the limit remains.

However, Garmin changed it in their new GPS PDA (the name escapes me). They modified the OS to allow a full 32 MB of addressable memory. My friend assures me that this is fine and has been expected. At some point PalmSource will undoubtedly add the change to the base OS just like they have added other changes made by OEMs in the past. However, for today the OS is limited to 16 MB unless the OS is specifically changed to allow more.

This is a quote from another thread. Foghead is very knowledgeable with Palm developing so I'm gonna have to take his word about this. Tek, where are you getting this information that OS5.x can't support more than 16MB. OS6 isn't even made. I don't see how you can know all this.

Okay then, how will the Garmin access 32mb?

Puzzled?

I read it in an interview with a guy that works for Palm. I'll see if i can find it, but i look at soo many palm sites daily it'll be hard, i'll see what i can do.

Enjoy.
