View Full Version : Converting video to Clie format

Does anyone know of a faster way to put video onto the clie other than via the image converter software Sony supplies. The image converter software seems to take forever converting. It doesn't take long to write the data to the flash card, so either the conversion is very compressed video or the software is inefficient. I know I can encode DivX's video faster than this (without any filters applied to the video). Then again, the applications i use are far more complex and better written than the Sony image converter software (I can use the full potetial of my processor if I wish, rather than have the program run in the background like Sony's program). Also, what specific format/codec is used to compress this video, and would I be able to download the codec, convert the video via another program then load the video to my MS?

unless you already have the movie in mqv format, the image viewer is it. And i don't really think it takes that long considering it's compressing and encoding. It probably takes more time to encode with tmpeg or virtual dub. Encoding takes time...

Enjoy.

I thought that the OS 5 Sony's could play mpegs. Why in hell would I pay 600 bucks for a PDA that has to have some proprietary conversion of a video format? That blows and I mean BLOWS. 600 dollars. Screw that! What is so friggin hard about a mpeg? Can anyone explain this? When the Tungsten finially gets that Real Player port, will it play mpegs? 600 dollars, no way ever, ever, never, ever. Don't flame, tell me, I want to know.

It takes so long because of the encoding/compression. I think it does a great job because the size is greatly reduced.
To bad about the mpgs though, I thought it could play 'raw' mpgs too. But it says it can only play Mpg's from Sony Digital Cameras in the manual

I can't get DivX to work on my NX...
When I use image convertor, alle setting fields are greyed out (except quality select), is that normal?
When I import a DivX, the movie does show up in the movieplayer list. It shows the first screen when I start, but the timeline warps to the end and starts over again, locking my NX in an endless loop. Mpgs and such work great.

Also, how do I import movies from my NX to a pc compatible format ????

The only other alternative is to use a software player such as Kinoma. BUT to make your own movies you have to buy Kinoma Producer (30 bucks) and even then the quality isn't as good as Image Converter.

I do agree that $600 is a rip-off for a machine that can't play formats such as MPEG4 or even MP3Pro!

The NX70V does play *.mpg files without conversion.

You just have to create folders in your memory stick like this to be able to read them:

/MSSONY/MOML0001

It's just that all sony products uses the same folder convention.

Tnx Unregisterd, gonna try it asap...

I installed Pictugergear lite with gMovie (gMovie == Kinoma ????)

But the colorpalette of the movie was ll screwd and it looked like **** (gmovie and kinoma).
How do I u/l a movie so Kinoma can see it/run it. I want it to look like the movieplayer movies. (and be able to rotate 90 degrees, Kinoma can't do this afaik)

Ummm, perhaps you should try Kinoma before going off about what it can and can't do. I use Kinoma Producer and Kinoma Player 1.5 and have no problem making great looking movies that are 320x480, and are displayed landscape. You can even decide whether you want them rotated clockwise or counter clockwise. The other thing I like about Kinoma is that you can call the movies whatever you want, not the arcane crap that Sony's Movie Player requires.

are they full length movies though, or just clips/episodes?

Enjoy.

if you say the sony can play mpeg-movies you have to be careful. the only kind of mpeg is mpeg1! and the so called sony-mpeg4 (it seems that this is a kind of quicktime 6.0 - mov files). i believe that there is no tool to create the sony-mpeg4 files. if you use quictime pro to create the so called mpeg4files you have many preferences to try - but in no way the movie was playable with the sony nx70v!!!!! -

BTW I created the above mentioned folder on the root of my MS. I copied a MPG-1 movie to it but movieplayer can't see it

okay, so after a day or so of research it turns out that you really only have two options: Sony's image converter or Kinoma. Sony's is free, Kinoma is $30. However, Kinoma does let you do a lot more things such as set bitrate of audio/video, which could greatly improve the quality/size of the video file. BUT I'm not really willing to pay $30 for a video encoder unless it'll let me do something like cram an whole movie into 100 MB or less (and actually look decent). I'm currently experimenting with Sony's image converter to see how much video I can squeeze into my tiny 128 MS. The compression ratios are interesting. Best quality is 2x size of normal, which is 2x size of low. So far normal has the best results/quality. But it seems that low is sorta like encoding a video with low motion mpeg-4. The relatively still scenes look good, but once you get moving around, it's all blocks. But considering it's 1/2 the size of normal compression, it may be worth looking into (just not for action films). Right now my only hope is to be able to fit a whole 1.5-2 hr movie on 2 MS's and still have room left over for some mp3's. I'll post more later on compression/file size ratios so you all can better decide on what is best for you.

Yeah thanx I got it and it works!!!!!!

I loaded the standard 'dog.mpg' wich is an included sample, but it has some screen tearing...I forgive my NX because the mpg is 1150kbps :D

I loaded another 14 MB mpg but it gives a black screen and when I play the time cursor is not moving. There is no MS activity.

Anywayz, mpg works and that rox.

I get the idea I used the wrong Kinoma, coz mine didn't have any other functions at all :)
