Hey guys, I was ready to buy my Treo 650 today for $550CND from my provider with the 3 year contract, like the saleboy said I could a week ago, but today he says that beacuse I have a contract already I have to pay $900! Even though I told him last week I had a plan with them already...uhg, danm kids dont know what they're talking about...

I think I just gained 100 gray hairs from this guy...

So what I am planning to do is buy my own Treo 650 from a friend, who works with electronics and would get a deal, then bring it there for activation. What I need to know is exactly what kind of Treo 650 I would need to buy? I am with Rogers Wireless Canada, this is the '650 they offer. Thanks!

I think an unlocked version can do the trick

To correct what was said above..I was going through Rogers site and I found
this:
Replace your current phone to get the latest phone features and style you want.
Switch your GSM service among more than one GSM phone.
Give the gift a new GSM phone without choosing a plan.
----
I do not know whether you will be able to use your old Sim with the unlocked version..Please double check before you make your purchase

What's that mean? I'm thinking about the treo as well. I've been told that the only difference between the 600 and 650 is that the 650 has an mp3 player and that you can download that onto the 600 - is that so?

Not only the MP3 player..but the 650 has a better res and built-in Bluetooth, Video recorder etc...
But you can surely download RealOne onto the 600.

So could I buy a Treo 650 directly from PalmOne, and then unlock it? I dont want to get one that say Cingular on it...wich is all I can seem to find on eBay...

Thanks!

UPDATE: Rogers says I could bring them a Regular Treo 650, and it costs $150 to unlock it?!

I guess if my friend can get it for $700 or less ill do that...If not Ill just buy it from Rogers directly :( ...

No, no, you buy the treo from Palm, and it comes without any branding except the Palm stuff. It doesn't say anything about a carrier. If they try to charge you extra for anything because of that, they're wrong.

OH, I think they think I meant if I brought them a Cingular Treo or another kind of GSM Treo..ok, I still havent had a chance to ask my friend if he could get it... :(

The Treo is hands down the best smartphone out there, no matter what OS is avaliable. I could not live without it. :D

as a side comment, if you purchase a "locked" treo 650 -- just know that it is one of the more easy gsm phones to unlock. there are some advantages to eventually having an unlocked gsm phone, even if you don't commonly swap SIMs.
