Saw this already from engadget. The battery is triple the UXs and the processor is 5x. Hope there is some kind of UnderClockerDA for WM 5.0. Anyway, I'm gonna hold onto my UX till at least a year or more. I want to see people's opinion on the device before I shell out near ~$1000 for it. Reember this, i tedevice haseverything you can ever dream off, its mostlikely expensive. But I am feeling the Black :)

Here's my translation for better readability ^^

A sneek preview of HTC's 3G dual network phone: the Universal

[2005-05-26] The HTC-Universal is the first to use WM5.0, also the first 3G/GSM dual network PPC phone. It has a VGA swival screen, WIFI wireless web connection and even a keyboard for more convenent text input! Convinced? Come on and see it for your self!
---

The HTC-Universal that HTC recently reveled to the world, is the first to use WM5.0, also the first 3G dual mode PPC phone. It will go under the name of "VPA IV" from Vodafone in Europe, and as "SPV 3G" from Orange, and is scheduled to be avaliable in the summer of 2005.

The goal of the HTC-Universal's development is to "put a home computer into your pocket, and become the best personal business/entertainment platform". With the strong support of Microsoft's software/hardware platform, the HTC-universal instantly catched everybody's eye with it's solid performance. Eprice(the reporting site) felt everybody's anticipation, and posted some exclusive photos in advance, to let every PPC junky have a sneek preview of this highly featured and Bill Gates endorced 3G PPC phone!

A Black PPC monster, bigger size, upgraded features

The HTC-Universal is a little bigger then it's sibling Dopod 818(also known as the MDA Compact), and also a quarter heavier. Different from the white model previously showed in Europe, this time we see a whole new "foggy-black" look. The simple and cool black casing gives it a better feel, the hidden antenna also makes the overall design seem more smooth and mature.

The HTC-Universal has a speaker on each of it's sides, can produce a stereo audio effect when playing multimedia; it also has a convenent cammera/shutter button, allowing you to quickly enter cammera mode without openning the phone. On the left side, there's also dial/hang buttons for fast voice function controls. Next to it is a mini USB port for convenently connecting devices, the reset button vital to PPCs and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

The HTC-Universal supports WIFI IEEE 802.11b, bluetooth and inferred communication functions; the power button is located on the top, next to the memory card slot. It has 96MB ROM, 128MB RAM and supports SD/MMC card expansion; the company hasn't reveled the largest memory card size it can support.

Huge VGA TFT screen, fast and accurate keybord input

Here comes the best part! The HTC-Universal comes with a 65000 colored 640*480 pixels VGA TFT screen. The astonding screen of nearly 4 taiwaness-inches shows info in great detail, alowing you to view full web pages without cutoff parts. The full keyboard layout lets you type faster wither you're editing documents or inputing text. There's also dedicated dial, browser and email buttons to let the user access all sorts of functions faster, highly optimizing work efficincy.

180 degress swival screen

Not only does it has a big screen, the HTC-Universal also catched on the latest swival trend; it's screen can be folded, and also turn 180 degress. Add on the keyboard below, and it becames a highly featured mini-notebook. Turn the big screen again, and the HTC-Universal instantly becames a movie showing, music playing personal theatere.

Touch screen

Maybe they heard everybody's wish, the HTC-Universal, under notebook mode, can be controled by both the touch screen and the keyboard, all at the same time. With both the convenence of screen tapping and the rapid speed of keyboard input, the handling of the HTC-Universal can be considered to be great for any occation.

Double cameras on the front and the back; there's no problem video chat and self-picture taking

On the back of the HTC-Universal there's a mainstreem 1.23mega pixel CMOS camera built-in, it can take photos and videos. The white frame of the lens on a all-black body seems very special; a useful light is also added to solve the embarressing moments of taking photos in the dark. The Microsoft logo under the lens shows everybody that it is indeed a Pocket PC phone.

A 5 way D-pad is located on the right side of the screen, alowing the user to easily control it single handedly without the stylus. Right under that, there's a QVGA 0.3mega pixel secondary camera, which can that photos of up to 640*480 pixels; be it video conferances, video phone or taking a picture of your self, it's very handy.

Open the main camera on the back, just the feeling of using such a large screen to capture is very satisfying! Not only is framing convenent, the HTC-Universal also has a good screen refresh rate, there won't be any on screen artifacts when taking pictures of moving objects. Switching to the secondary camera, the QVGA view on the screen is acceptably clear, enough for video conferances. All related functions such as picture size, light, digital zoom and exposure settings can be set by a screen tap, pretty simple.

Not confortable until said...

The HTC-Universal can almost be considered today's new standerd of PPCs: WM5.0, VGA swival touch screen, keyboard input, WCDMA dual network support, bluetooth, WIFI, double camera, it can almost fulfill all your mobile needs. Just give it a price that's not too expensive and it should sell like hotcakes. To really pick a bad part, the HTC-Universal is too big, on first sight you'd think it's a color screen electronic translator(or e-dictionaries, which are the best selling devices in Taiwan after phones). If you really want to use it to make a call, it would be better to get a bluetooth headset.

---
I guess the rest is clear enough from the original site:
http://www.eprice.com.tw/news/?news_id=2913

Boy, so this is the ultimate "bag of features". It must've cost a fortune. Although I wish it runs on Cobalt, WM5.0 sure's a looker. Garnet works great but look sooooo "90's" without skinUI. Palm should get a better looking GUI.

Probably not all that expensive since it is also a phone and they are usually subsidized by your cell phone provider (at least over here in Europe) so it will be probably run around € 300.- with a contract!
The MDA compact runs for € 60.- as an example...

and yes we are all quite excited about this new device...

yay! a ux50-like clamshell model with keyboard and even better camera!!!
(sob, but it is a ppc; the only time i tried switching from palm to ppc, my pda usage rate shrunk from several times a day every day to once in awhile just to make sure the battery was alive. not to mention all my apps become useless)

okay, as i wipe the drool away, i wuz wondering~
does it have different power switches for phone and for pda (ie so when i am hiking in the mountains or say, in Japan where there the phone system is incompatible, or otherwise distant from good phone signals, i can just turn off the phone part & my pda doesn't drain its batteries trying to get a non-existent phone signal) Also, can i slap on a spare battery (like a cell phone) or is it the internal rechargeable type

otherwise can the same bluetooth earpiece (for this phone part) work with skype over wifi (for the pda part)? (sorry if this is a dumb or incohate question!)

ooh ooh ooh ! the pic here looks like it has a backlit keyboard as well!
http://www.htc.com.tw/news/press050511.html

if anyone gets a hold of one, let us know what it's like!

(does it record video/sound? if you are using a bluetooth earpiece, can you take notes on the pda part while speaking on the phone? ie can you use the pda part well while using the phone part? etc etc)

You can easily activate Flight Mode, which will switch off all radios, leaving the PDA part fully functional.

From Engadget:

How are the stereo speakers?

Very small and very tinny – which is about what you’d expect for tiny little speakers. It’s possible to listen to music or watch a video, but you’ll probably want to use headphones if you can. Still, if you’re hanging out with friends and want to play them a song or show them a video it’ll get the job done.

Hmm two stereo speakers. I bet they are as loud or close to as loud as a PSP speakers. Which is better than the UX one speaker anyway.

Actually they aren't in public areas. But in silent areas, it is. Thats why I prefer them record the sound of the Universal to some device but not sure which. I'd prefer a UX but everyone don't have a UX.

Agreed. The reason I chose Windows XP over Mac was due to Mac couldn't play GTA San Andres. I just realized that gaming is going to be the same reason I switch to the so-called "dark side."

Now that the Treo is being assimilated, this device looks a little better to me. Technically I've always been more impressed, but I'm still on the fence. :)

When taking video, does it only support WMVomit, or does it also support mp4, or some other preferred format?

Yea exactly Spiral. I read that WM is the same as that of WM 2003 SE. In that it has a lot of flaws (including playlist being reset on device reset and so on). I want this device. If I must leave Palm, I will. They haven't accepted Clamshells yet and I won't assimilate to what I see as a downgrade (Treo 650).

I see that tcpmp supports playback, but for capturing It's safe to say it doesn't have that option? Thanks for the recommendation. Is this thing better than a package like Kinoma?

WMVomit is a nasty codec, one that I'd rather not deal with, so as long as I can capture in something besides that vomit, I'd be happy. :)

Hello all. I've been telling JA about my initial impressions on the JJ (i-Mate JasJar). I thought I would summarise things here (after one day of usage):

Pros:

- the keyboard is well designed as it is very easy to use and accurate
- you don't need to use the stylus as there are soft key options for the majority of functions
- size, this unit is much smaller than I expected (and usable)
- the speed of IE with WiFi and 3G data is good and IE so far seems more stable than Blaser on the LD. There is good operator settings support at the i-mate web site

Cons:
- the flash memory design of this WM device seems to make it slower fo some operations (lags when some system changes are made)
- not being a WM/PPC user I was expecting a much more exciting OS and UI. The UI is the same from what I remember of WinCE2.11! Perhaps with WM5/PPC you need to use more third-party apps for the UI enhancement than POS/ Symbian UIQ
- low on-board memory. After some i-mate apps are loaded like Skype I only have 30MB of user memory and the WM apps are very large

Also I am surpised that I have had so much difficulty finding WM5 compatiable apps. I am sure my views will change in a week once I have had time to use it a bit more. Being a Nokia 9500 user, I know the benefits of a keyboard device and the JJ does have a very good keyboard.

I use a Nokia 9500, Treo 650, LD now and in the past I have used the Nokia 7710, SE P910i and the Sony TH55.

Edit 1: JA, in summary I would say the JJ is more of a PDA than Smartphone and therefore may be ideal for you! But remember to budget $150 for a 2GB SD card! If you are looking for a phone with PDA functions that I would recommend the Nokia 9500/9300

Edit 2: The video playback quality seems poor for a 520Mhz device. I need to spend more time on this to find what is going on. Also memory reclaimation seems to be very poor.

Edit 3: the JJ performs much better when third party apps are not installed. Managed to get over 3 hours from a fully charged battery (first charge). Mixed usage about 60% PIM/Office apps and 40% web browsing with WiFi and 3G (UMTS). Managed to write a business document in two 30 minute slots - the keyboard is that good!

An update.

There are many BT problems users are discovering with the JJ. The BT does get swicthed off by WM5 power conservation even though the BT light indicates it is on. The size/design of the JJ itself can act a shield for its own BT signal. For a camshell device with no display on the outside a BT headset like the Jabra BT800 is ideal but with the JJ's BT problems it is not as easy to use as most (cheap) cellphones.

Also if you are in the UK the O2 XDA Exec can be purchased for about £400 from www.o2.co.uk compared to the £630 for the JJ.

My plan was to buy a 4GB SD card to see if I could replace my LD (which I really like) but I my 2GB SD card seems to get formatted to 970MB on my laptop - so I need to figure out this problem before I try to make the JJ my main PDA and cellphone (the call quality is good as is the video calling).

I guess its the same as the HTC Universal, but with slower CPU and different case. For basic to medium PDA needs though I am guessing it will still work very well. Perhaps battery life is better?

That's still a ton of hardware for the price- 128MB RAM, 64MB flash, Wifi, BT, 1.3MP camera, blah blah blah.

$299 is very tempting. I have Cingular right now, and my contract is expired. So I should be able to get the same deal if I renew my contract (I think.)

EDIT- This one might be a QVGA screen?

I'm not familiar with the various models, so I was wondering if one was dramatically better than the others. I did read the specs, and the Apache looks like a lesser version but still pretty good.

I wouldn't spend more than $299 anyways so a Universal is out of the question for me (I've migrated to my PowerBook for most everything.) But that Cingular/Apache model looks pretty interesting. Maybe in a few months it will be down to $200 or so (with contract of course.)

PDAJah, I read that the HTC Universal are plaque with software bugs, is this true? If yes, are you having second thoughts about buying it?

The i-Mate JJ does have different software from the o2 XDA Exec.

So, the bugs that are really nasty on the JJ are:

- the unit can freeze when you receive a notification of a SMS
- when using email over UMTS the unit can freeze (when downloading)
- if you use power conservation settings (suspend) the BT can switch-off without the indicator (blue flashing light) being switched off (so basically your BT headset does not work)
- the BT chip seems to be placed in a way that causes the rest of the JJ hardware to act like a shield so the BT signal is very directional and very weak when not in a car/office/room

So a number of problems. It is surprising that a company the size of M$ is so bad at software development! I don't regret getting the JJ (and Exec, see below) as I really like using the keyboard and browsing/email over UMTS. Note: I still get Blaser crashing on my LD - which is a shame as I really like my LD.

I have now sold my JJ and bought a O2 XDA Exec instead - why because I prefer the look of the XDA (but it does seem to have a lower quality display).

If you are in the UK it is possible to buy a o2 XDA Exec for less than UKP300! I can tell you how if you PM me.

I got to play with a Universal the other day (QTek 9000). I loved it.

It is much smaller than I expected. It is roughtly the footprint of a T5 or TX and about half again as thick as the TX with the cover on.

The problem for me is that it is a 900/1800/1900 tri-band phone and I am on a Cingular 850 network so it is not usable.

But if you want to buy one, Dave Weiniger at Mad Monkey Boy's Gadgets (http://www.dweiniger.com/) has them in stock. This is the best online store that I have found for buying Windows Mobile phones.

This Cingular HTC Apache is coming out in a couple of weeks, $299 with a contract!

299 sounds crazy deal... but how will be the quality of the device? it would bw quite massive disappointment if it will break to hands :D

BTW wow! HTC-Universal supports also wifi 802.11g!
...that would be so cool... any idea about the prize?

So, anyone bought one of these? Which version is best for use in US?

Sorry to bump the thread, but I bought a new O2 XDA Exec, and I love it. The only thing I hate is how Windows mobile treats the display as 320x240. So everything is smoother, but everything is large like on a 320x240 screen (including web browsing).

So, anyone still have a qtek 9000, imate jasjar etc? How do you like it? I won't be using the phone feature. I have a Clie UX50 and love the keyboard, but am hating the small screen, and battery life. Anyone know the differences in size between the two?

Still debating on getting one of these. They are still quite expensive for being over 2 years old. Anyone know of a good place to buy one? Tried ebay but there are very few of them, and a couple listings look fake.
