My laptop is refusing to shutdown. It says WMS Idle is still running and simply won't shutdown. i tried ending the process, but it won't let me. Anyone have any ideas about what i could do?

hold the power button down for 6-10 seconds should do a hard-shutdown, same as turning off the power in a desktop. Its the "last resort" solution, but it sounds like you are at that stage if you cannot shutdown from taskmanager.

Yeah, I've been doing a hard shutdown, but it's really annoying me that it won't shut down without doing that.

No one has any other ideas? I tried running fixmapi.exe and nothing happend. And, i also tried disabling the e-mail scanning in Norton. Nothing seems to work.

well, the ultimate solution is what I just did to my home computer after replacing hardware. It's long and painful, but it usually works. And you don't loose everything by wiping out the partition. Do a Windows XP repair.

It's about your Windows Messenger. If you are using it, I suggest you update to the latest version. If not do this:
Open Windows Messenger from the Start Menu, go to Tools, select options, go to the Preferences, remove the check from "run this program when Windows starts" and click ok.
Let us know if this worked.

Do a virus and spyware check. One of those programs may be crashing when your are shutting off your computer, causing it to hang.

I too have seen PCs refuse to shut down properly because E.T. Worm was phoning home. Check you system with multiple virus and spyware checkers if you are able. If that is not the case, I would look to new hardware. Good luck!
