View Full Version : The honeymoon is over :( Screen is Yellow!

Well it had to happen sooner or later. Today I began notice that my screen was beginning to look a little yellow. I dismissed this a freak eye problem but as I look at my new little toy there is no mistaking that the screen has gone from white to yellow. I have tried playing with the contrast and the problem does not go away. I am pretty pissed off right now. Is anyone else having this kind of problem? I picked this up over two weeks ago so my return possibility has passed. I have never had to use Sony Support for any of my past Clie's so I am wondering how they are about sending a replacement unit. Does anyone have any experiece with this?

YEllow??? How come? Are you sure it's not the lighting condition?

@jeffry
Yes it has a yellow hue to it. I tried under a few different types of lights with the same results. Bummer!

BTW

Nice NSX! I have a 91 BLK/BLK. Do you post at nsxprime? I think I have seen that avatar over there.

Well, a yellow screen is what you get when you leave the TG50 out near Fido where he can take a leak on it...

Don't even get me started about what my dog did to my Palm III!
I think I am going to do the old buy a new one from Compusa and return the defective one in new box. The CompUsa near me has not caught on to this even after doing it for years. Beats waiting for Sony.

that is a pretty low thing to do...

NSXs are awesome, but I don't think that Jeffry owns one...unless he's a very lucky 16 yr old :D

i agree but a 14 day return policy is pretty low in my book :)

Of course not, I'm a cheap bastard ;)

It is, but that's the trade off for getting a "no questions asked" type return policy. I'm lucky that I paid extra for the warranty for my TG50.

Can you post a pic of the yellowing screen? Also, is there anything you may have done to it that might cause this condition? One thing that leaps immediately to mind is leaving it out in the sun for a few minutes with the flip cover up...

This REALLY shouldn't be possible without like UV damage.

I was hoping this was an April Fools joke, but since your last post was today (April 2), I can only say, it's been 9 days since I've used mine (and for HOURS on end), so I'll follow up in 5 or 6 days to see if this happens to mine.

I don't know what stores are like in your area, but in my area we have a 30 day return policy, but stores will usually still accept an exchange within 60 days, though they won't honor a return for cash.

OK here is the situation. I think it might have been my fault since I decided to re-encode all of my Star Wars movies onto the CLie so for about at least 4 hours while I was doing it the device was on. I then left it on and running overnight while it finished. Like an idiot I did not think of turing off the backlight while it was on all night. This is the only thing I can think of that might have caused the screen to yellow. In any event I went back to CompUSA where I bought it and since they all know I am a computer buying addict the manager let me slide on the 14 day thing ( not to mention the fact that I lost the reciept) and gave me a new one. The screen on this one looks great again so all is good. I guess I learned a leason. DON"T LEAVE THE SCREEN ON OVERNIGHT!. It's wierd because I would have thought that there would have been screen burn-in rather than a general yellowing.

Well, since it was Star Wars, we'll let you off the hook! By the way, are you using High or Medium quality in the Image Converter? How big is the file for the movie?

Anyone else have there TG for more than 2 weeks and notice any yellowing problem?

I actually used medium for Empire and low for Jedi and A New Hope. Combined they take up about 700 mb of space. For future reference though the difference between high and medium is not very much. Between medium and low and when the quality in my opinion really begins to suffer. Somewhere on this site a guy had the movie times broken down according to sony specs. I can't remember which forum it was in though.

If you are using image convertor to encode you really should encode to the hard drive and then use msimport to move your mqv file to your memory stick.  Doing it the way you did is a waste of time.  These handhelds are supposed to go  a long time before the backlight is damaged or damages the screen though so I don't think you did anything that was irresposible.  I think during quality assurance tests some models are left on until the battery dies and some models are plugged into a power supply and left on for weeks.

how is watching the entire full length star wars on the TG50's tiny screen anyways? I'm sure for me it would be a huge eye sore.

Thanks Somas1. I was impatient when I finally got the big stick and my computer for some odd reason kept crashing when I tried to encode to the drive so I just did it to the stick with MSIMPORT. Now that I have the MSPRO reader/writer I am going to do it that way in the future. Now all I need to do is break out the old Laserdiscs and do this thing the right way!

Actually its not that bad. Now if I try to watch the whole trilogy in one sitting I am sure my eyes will pop out of my head.(Which would spare me from having to watch Ep's 1 and 2 again) I guess I am going to need glasses sooner than later now.

Can you tell us how much time it takes you to transfer a MB to your ms pro via msimport on your clie versus via your mspro reader/writer

Gee, with the new MS Pro sticks you'd think Sony would release a USB 2.0 adapter or a new USB 2.0 capable cradle for the Sony Clies...

Bummer, I that would really suck spending all of that money for an Old Yeller Screen. I hope the sony gods are with me on my handheld.

Gee, watching the Star Wars movies would look a lot better on a TG sized device with a 320*480 screen...

I have not timed it out but I would say it takes about half the time.

The adapter I am using (MSAC-US20) says USB2 on the box but there is not way it is operating at usb2 speeds. One of the current threads has the benchmark numbers and the write speed on the disk is as slow as the old sticks. Weird.

Ahh...the holy grail!!!

So, anyone else have their TG for over two weeks of heavy use without the yellowing problem?

well, since the TG50 is out for only 2 weeks, not many people can testify this ..
however, it scared me a little bit, because now i was about to buy either TG50 (besides the thumboard it's just my dream palm device) or NX70/60 => CF memory driver looks promising and i was always looking what could substitute my trgpro but the clamshell design and weight kinda sucks
temorary i ended up in sj30 :D

gee, i'm so confused ..

I've had mine for 3 weeks, and I have no problems over here.

:D

The NX60 is nice, but the TG50 is the most sensible (most movies are 320*240, smaller than the NX's screen, the TG50 has the same performance as the NX60, and the wireless is built in!!!).

I would not let my experience shy you away from this puppy. The problem may have been my fault. After all when I took it back I guess I could have purchased something else but I stuck with the TG. I could have gotten a bad batch since I bough it the day it came out. Who knows...in any event I still love the damn thing and will continue using it until the next Clie comes out and I start all over again :)

How is the battery life when watching movies?? How long does it last?

plessdude
04-03-2003, 12:40 PM
Good Question!

I can watch a whole movie on a full baterry and the indicator is at around 40% I wonder if that would improve if I were using headphones. I am going to Vegas in two weeks and I am planning on watching at least two movies to get me through the flight so I hope the Clie makes it. (Or I am just going to take two Valiums and skip the whole expereiment :))
