Hi,
I received a fatal error message and reset. Every time I did the reset the error was still there. I have tried many many times to do hard resets but it never goes through. I drained the power & then put it on the cradle & the fatal error message still came up.

What else can I do?

Thanks,
csc

What do you mean when you say the hard reset never goes through? Were you prompted to hit a button to erase all data?

There is another kind of reset as well-- I've heard it referred to as a "warm reset", and it's a lot like Windows "safe mode". If you hold the up-arrow key down while the handheld resets, you should be able to get to the application launcher, from where you may be able to delete the item that is causing your unit to not reset properly. (however, a true hard reset should do the trick). The 'warm reset' essentially boots up PalmOS without running anything that isn't absolutely necessary for the OS to launch (such as Sony's status bar addition).

It may be that you need to go into some more detail for anyone here to help, though--

1. Have you used JackSprat to remove items from your Clie's ROM?
2. Do you have any system hacks installed/enabled?
3. What (if anything) was the last thing you installed on your handheld?
4. Did this happen immediately after you hotsynced, or did it "just happen"?

Warning. A hard reset erases all data. Make sure you have a backup of all your data.

To do the hard reset, you hold in the power button while pressing the reset button/hole in the back with a clip or something.

After a few seconds, release the power button and you will be prompted whether you want to erase all data. If you choose "yes" then you've done a hard reset.

After you do the hard reset, BEFORE you do the restore (syncing with PC) then pull out (of your back on your PC) the last programs that you installed or ran as these are most likely the problem.

If that doesn't work then hard reset again and pull the whole backup folder (move the contents to your desktop), restore the Clie and then sync the files-one by one-into the Clie again, starting with the programs you are sure are OK, ie you've had and run for a while now.

Hope this helps:)

I'm not sure that we're using the same terminology here.

A reset is when you put a clip in the back and press. It's like a reboot on a PC.

A warm reset is when you do the same, but also hold in the page-up button. This keeps apps from loading into memory after the "reboot." Many things don't work after a warm reset (high res, jogdial, memory stick access, etc.), since drivers, etc. are not loaded.

A hard reset erases all data and restores the unit to the state it was in out of the box. That is performed via the instructions in my previous post.

As to why you can't hotsync, if you've done a warm reset, as you say, the drivers may not be active and you might have to do a normal reset to put things back.

If that doesn't work, sometimes you can warm-reset and then delete the app that is causing the issue (either directly or with a file manager like FileZ). Then do a reset to get back to normal again.

If all else fails, the hard reset might be the only option.

When you do a hard reset, if you don't get the prompt to erase all data, then you are not doing it right. Try holding the power button in for several seconds before releasing it. Then you will see the prompt to erase all data.
