I was wondering which one to get, the SJ22 or Palm m130. Which is easier to use and have more software?

they use the same OS so easier of harder makes no diff...but i am sure you will not have much problem because palm is a very user friendly os... personally i would recomment sj22 because it supports hi res... whcih looks much better than m130

Isn't the m130 256 colors and 160x160?

4,000 colors, 160x160. And I would STRONGLY recommend the SJ22 over the M130 (which in my opinion is a VERY poor value).

Funny, I just recommended the SJ22 to a Palm newbie friend over any of the Palm models (in her price range). She actually took my advice. ;) Seriously, for the price, the SJ22 sounds like a great value. When she asked my advice, I thought I'd have to weigh a lot of pros and cons of different models, but when I actually looked, there was no contest.

I just purchased the sj22 within the last week. I absolutely love it!! I too was deciding between the m130 and when it came down to it, the sj22 was quite the bang for your buck. The hi-res is fabulous!!:p

Both are as easy to use, but I would get a SJ22 at anytime over a m130 because of its Hi-res screen.
The screen makes A LOT of difference to me.

I'm still deciding, getting one next week. I need some more answers though, which handheld has more apps and compatible with the software that they sell at retail stores like Best Buy or Comp USA?

Okay, I'm putting my honour project in jeopardy trying to get you to get the SJ22 instead of m130. :)
First of all, both of them run Palm OS 4.1, though there are some little differences between them (e.g. SJ22 has Hi-res support, m130 has SD support), they're more or less the same.
Palm softwares mostly have good (very good I would say) compatibilities, except for the jump from OS4 to OS5. Sometimes incompatibilities do arise, but mainly because of new products and usually get fixed very soon (AvantGo is an exception... :)).
Software ONLY on m130:
Documents To Go (you may try to find a SJ30 if you want DTG)
Palm Reader (you can find a TONS of DOC readers out there)
MGI Photosuite (Sony bundles PictureGear instead)
Pocket Mirror (Sony bundles another Outlook sync program which I've forgot the name but I do think Pocket Mirror is the better choice)
MultiMail SE (Sony has CLIE Mail)
NotePad
Software ONLY on SJ22:
CLIE Paint (MGI Photosuite should contain drawing function)
Various Memory Stick utilities
PhotoStand (not sure if MGI PS has this)
World Alarm Clock
Kinoma Player (not sure but seems free download)
MobiPocket Reader (free too)
StreetFinder Expresss (no idea...)
Afterall, the bundled softwares on low-end Palms are usually more or less the same.
Not to mention the SJ22 is lighter, display more color, 8MB more RAM, ***Hi-res screen***.

m130 simply no fight.....

Both are nice devices, but for the same price you are much better off with the SJ/22.
The SJ/22 has 16mb of Ram vs. the 8mb of the palm. They have the same speed processor. The SJ/22 can display 16bit color vs. 12 bit on the m130. The sony has a 320x320 screen vs 16x160 on the palm. This is HUGE. The screen resolution makes everything from text to video look better.
The Sony will be a bit more difficult if you are a mac user. Otherwise compatibility is not an issue as they can both use the same software. The Palm does come with docs to go which is very Microsoft Office compatible. This can be purchased and added to the SJ/22 or you can go for the SJ/30 (it is included there).
For the price, all you are loosing with the sony is Docs to Go. With the palm, you lose 8mb of ram and Hi-res. No contest in my book!
BTW.. I own a palm m130, a Sony sj/20 and a sony sj/22. The 22 is the nicest, but my wife won't give it up. The hi-res is so much nicer that I use the sj/20 over the m130.

SJ22 easily. No comparison. My wife has an m515 and she drools over the screen on my SJ30 (fortunately, not literally).

Anyway, somehow "Palm" the brand name do quite a sales, not everybody recognize the difference of "Palm OS" and "Palm devices" (or Palm Solutions, whatever...).

Since everyone is suggesting the SJ22, I will play devils advocate for a moment here.....and explain that m130 does have certain advantages over SJ22:
1) m130 is a lot more rugged than SJ22. m130's plastic casing has a plastic digitizer, which means that it was designed to take abuse in day to day operation. I've heard from people who have dropped the m130 on numerous occasions and it still works perfectly. The plastic digitizer (as opposed to a glass one) means that the screen will not shatter when you drop the PDA. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Clie's are not as durable as Palm mxxx series. Try dropping a Clie one meter onto concrete ground and let's see if it still works afterwards. As a result, m130's don't even need 3rd party cases to cover it
2) The buttons on m130 are just a whole lot nicer and easier to press than SJ22's....see it in a store yourself before believe me on this one. Many SJ22 reviews on the net (infosyncworld.com most notably) have criticized the SJ22's buttons as "hard to press"..."hard to use jog dial and back button".....etc
3) The memory stick slot is proprietary and limited in space. This is an extreme drawback for many.....since other memory types are cheaper and available in larger sizes. (SD, MMC, etc)
4) SJ22 has no hotsync cradle, whereas m130 has one. What's the difference? You have to manually run the hotsync on the SJ22 just to hotsync, which can be extremely inconvenient....whereas with an m130, all you have to do is drop it in the cradle and press the hotsync button...
5) Better battery life in m130 than SJ22. m130's battery life with the backlight on low (there are two settings, low and high) can last 10 hours. But this is probably due to m130's smaller screen requiring less energy to power the backlight.....so some may see this as a drawback..
All in all, don't even think that SJ22 is a runaway success....everything has pros and cons. But with all that said, I would recommend SJ22 only for its great looking screen. Consider the m130 only if you want durability and ruggedness, and if you tend to abuse your PDA's :)
-Chris, a handspring Visor Deluxe user currently looking for a new color PDA....perhaps SJ22 or Zire 71..

yep brand recognition makes the whole difference ..
anyway, go with sj22 don't even think of m130 ..
well the only advantage of m130 you can use it even without backlit on => longer lasting
but i woulde deffinitely go for sj22 or sj30 if you want documents to go ..

Not much to add, but I want to chime in anyway :)
I’ve owned neither, but used both in stores. From what I’ve seen, there’s no contest.
The SJ-22 has:
-A larger, active matrix, high resolution screen. MUCH easier to read. The m130 seems to have a passive matrix screen, as it’s kind of blurry and ghosts (leaves trails as you scroll). Really lame screen. IMO worse than many grayscale devices.
-Double the RAM, 16MB versus 8.
-Personal preference, but I prefer the look of the SJ-22, and it has a nice scroll wheel which the m130 lacks. (Although the regular up/down buttons on the SJ-22 are a little worse feeling).
When you ask about software, I’m not sure if you meant software compatibility, or what software they’re bundled with. As far as compatibility goes, they’re both going to be 100% compatible with any Palm OS program, as long as they meet the minimum system requirements. I’m sure there’s SOMETHING out there that won’t run on one or the other, but that’s extremely rare (I’ve yet to see it).
The m130 has only two advantages. It comes with a better software bundle. The m130 has Mac OS support out of the box (it’s like $30 to add it to the Sony Palms) and an office program (an old version of Documents to Go). You can add an office program like Documents to Go or Wordsmith (both are great and have free demos available) for like $30-50 to the SJ-22. In fact the SJ-22 is much better for office programs as the high-resolution screen gives you more viewing options in spreadsheets, and the extra RAM means you can stick a heck of a lot of extra documents on there.
The only other advantage the m130 has is an included cradle. The SJ-22 only has a cable, and a cradle costs $30 extra, if you want one (you don’t NEED one, the cable syncs with your computer fine, but personally I like having cradles).
So in other words, the SJ-22 is absolutely better hardware, but it’ll cost you roughly $60+ to add an office program and a cradle to it, if you want those things (though to be fair, the m130 comes with an old version of Docs to Go, which will cost $30 or so if you want to upgrade that). Unless you really, really want a cradle and an office program without having to spend anything extra for them, I wouldn’t bother giving the m130 a second glance. It was something of a joke when it got released a year ago, and it looks even sadder now that the SJ-22 is the same price.
As someone else on here said, if you can find an SJ-30 being clearenced out for the same price, that's basically identical to the SJ-22 except that it came with a copy of Documents to Go.

I just bought the SJ22 and love it. I had access to an SL20 for 6 weeks and that sold me on the Sony resolution, quality and jog dial (which I like for reading with one hand). It was a no brainer to get the new high value color Sony (SJ22).

I'd rather get the Sony SJ line compared to the bloody Palm M130!I used to own one,12 bit screen (4096 colors),slow refresh rate,8MB(Come on,man! You got to be kidding),awfully terrible battery life, and 160x160?Hah!It's nothing comapared to a Sony Clie!

I've researched pretty much evry PDA in this price range and I purchased the SJ22. It's screen resolution is great. It's even much better than the Palm M515,which costs quite a bit more. All and all I give a big thumbs up. I love the jog and back features. It enables you to scroll through each application rather than use the stylus to move the screen. The back feature allows you to move back and forth between applications as well. I was a bit concerned that it didn't have a cradle, but I've found I actually like this better. The USB connection tales up very little room in my laptop case.

SJ22 by FAR. I have owned MANY PDA's from my PDA gaming website. Palm m515, m505, m130, IIIc, Sony NR70V, T615c, SJ30, SJ22.
I think the SJ22 probaly has the best screen out of them all. Not to mention abotu 60,000 more colors then the m130, double the memory, hires screen, jog dial, need I go on? :D

Wondering whether to get the m-130 or the sj-22? This is a true story. A colleague bought an m-130 and I bought the sj-22 within a week of each other. After she saw the sj-22, she returned the m-130, got a full refund, drove around the corner to CompUSA and bought the sj-22. She's happy she (1) was able to get the full refund on the m-130 and (2) bought the sj-22. Need I say more?
