I'm currently contemplating to buy a 2nd hand nx80 but there are a few things i'm trying to find out but can't seem to find on this forum or on SPUG ..

1) Has anyone tried surfing the net using your NX80 via GPRS usign bluetooth MS ? How is it ?

2) What program/browser did you use on the NX80 .. or should I say what are the recommended browsers for net surfing

3) I understand clie can play shockwave files. But is it possible for the clie to load webpages with shockwave files ? Also, is it possible to access websites that require Java on the clie ? Eg sites for internet banking ...

4) My old clie (n760) couldn't play mp3s that are encoded above 256kbps. Does the nx80 have the same problem ?

5) I also noticed that there is a PEG-NX80V/G and a PEG-NX80V/H. Wats the difference between the 2 ?

Thanks in advance ..

I can only answer questions 2 and 3 as I don't know the answers to the others.

2) The best browser, in my opinion is Netfront 3.1 from a TH55 (which is an update to the built in Netfront3.0 that came with the NX) However, it is very big and if you don't wan't a browser to take up about 2MB on your NX, I recommend you to run it from a memorystick or just keep with the old one that's built in.

3)I think what you mean is shockwave flash. The flash player on clies only supports "swf" files with these restrections: 1. saved in the old flash 5 format (while most ones that you can find are in flash 7 format) 2. They should be stand-alone files, Netfront3.0/3.1 donsn't have a flash plug-in. Netfront3.2 is said to have a flash plug-in, but it is not avaliable to the public.
As with Java, Netfront supports "some" Javascripts, but I don't think it can run Java Applets. Also, many internet banking sites use Active X instead of Java, which is only supported on desktop versions of IE.

Wish these do help. IMHO, Netfront is great for reading normal sites, but not for net applications(eg. Banking).

@intellidryad, do you have 3.1 running from card? I tried this but it simply loads the older NX version 3.0.. If I drop it into RAM then it will load but otherwise not? Any tips on this?

Can I add another restriction. As far as I have seen the flash player only supports embeded MP3 streams (wav?) and not the common compressed format you can also find in swf files called "Nellymoser"... So some flash will not have sound on the NX.

I agree that Netfront does a generally OK job but if you can get Mobile Stream's Screen Rotation Utility setup properly Netfront is even better in landscape mode.

Points 4 and 5.

4. MP3s. I haven't tried MP3s with such high bitrates as you are suggesting as I reduce bitrate for the NX mostly to save space and because I doubt I would notice the difference via the Clie sound device anyway....

However you might need to get a driver ( MCA2_05_TEST.prc) to play MP3s off the memory cards anyway. This also enables various bitrate levels and allows you to use alternative players like Pocket Tunes... It also enables sound in video off the card which would be silent otherwise. (at least this is true on my NX73)..

5. NX80V/G and a NX80V/H... I'm not totally sure but does the G and H simply denote either the part of the world they are manufactured for or where they are manufactured? Like my Clie is NX73V /E which is the European version.

Is /U Japanese???

I guess you better make sure you don't get one in the wrong language...

I still got loads to learn though

I'll briefly answer questions 4) and 5):

4) I'm fairly sure it can play files with that high bitrate (iirc I have played 320kb.s-1 mp3s using the default player before). But, even if it doesn't, the NX80's OS5 nature means there are 4 or 5 third-party mp3/ogg/etc players which have more features than the built-in player, anyway.

5) There is no difference (apart from possible language) between the NX80V/x models. I myself have an NX80V/U, (American I'd assume since I bought one there and shipped it to Australia), and it's identical in every visible way to its European and Asian counterparts.

As a side note, if anyone is willing to sell a bluetooth phone (however crappy, as long as it has GPRS) or swap it for a Linksys WRT54G wi-fi router, send me an email - I'll reply with efficiency.

Have a good one!

Browsing the web with the NX80 is SLOW. Don't get too excited about it. Bring your laptop if you need to do moderate work on the Internet. This is based on my experience with the WL110 WiFi card. This is a basic setup to allow you to check email and send a few messages, not research a dissertation.

Regarding bit rates of mp3s...Sony recommends a top end of 320kbps.

There is also an PEG-NX80V/U. This is the unit shipped to the US. The /G and /H are likely models distributed to Europe and Asia.

The NX80 is an excellent unit. Enjoy it!!
