View Full Version : Built-in voice memo recording causes secure (30min) Hard Reset

I apologize if I am monopolizing the lifedrive forum but I am having a bunch of issues and I wanted to know if anyone else is having any of these issues. I was at an Orson Scott Card signing the other week (if you don't know who he is, you should REALLY read his books. Start out with Ender's Game and move on from there,) and he gave a little speech about what he is planning on writing next and which series he is continuing. So I decided to record it with my LD. I started the recording and put my LD on HOLD so that I would not accidentally interrupt the recording. I believe the screen shut off after a minute or two but I could see the HDD light blinking so I knew it was on. About a half an hour later I decided to turn the screen back on to check on it. I turned it back on and it froze. I tried pressing everything, even tried to stop recording it and nothing happened. So I decided to soft reset it. As soon as I tried, it went into a secure reset. There was no option to do anything else. Only secure reset. I tried stopping it and reseting it again and it just went straight into a 30 minute reset. Thirty minutes later, I was left with a blank LD, no recording, none of my files, NOTHING. Worst of all, I couldn't even record the end of the speech b/c by the time it EVENTUALLY decided to finish resetting, 30 minutes later, he was done speaking. Bottom line... has anyone else had any problems with the voice memo causing an unavoidable Secure Hard Reset?

That sucks! I loved Ender's Game. So, losing all your data AND not being able to record his speech is a double whammy.

I posted this at Brighthand:

1. Launch the Voice Memo app, and click on Record.
2. Slide the power switch over to the Lock position.
3. Now slide the power switch back to the center.
4. Stop the recording by clicking on Stop.

My unit only locked up at this point, and recovered with a soft reset, not a hard reset like yours. I was able to reproduce this behavior like half a dozen times, and it didn't matter if I recorded to memory or the hard drive. I don't have a SD card, so I didn't test that.

Did you do a warm reset before this happened? Some people have mentioned that after attempting a warm reset (memory gets wiped, but not the hd), that a soft reset after wards would result in a secure erase.

So this happens to you too? It's not only me? You mentioned that some people said that doing a warm reset and then a soft causes a secure reset. I didn't do a warm reset first! That is all that happened, about 30 min into the speech I turned it back on and it froze, then a secure reset. That's it! Also, where did you see this thread about doing a warm and then a soft? Is there another thread about problems with voice memo?

Yeah, the Voice Memo app locked up when I flip the keylock switch back, but I was able to do a soft reset to recover. Mine didn't go into a hard "wipe everything" reset.

This is the thread where people said that a warm reset MAY lead to a secure reset the next time you try a soft reset.

http://www.1src.com/forums/showthread.php?t=89990&page=1&pp=15

Someone on that thread said that it may have something to do with the "wipe HD if too many password attempts" security setting on the LD. Do you have that set?

I looked around, and the only mention on 1src or Brighthand about the Voice Memo app locking up is my thread here:

What case you do use? I've been using the Palm slipcase that came with it, and it seems to protect the LD from accidental power-ons from button presses. I'm not using the keylock switch until I find out more about why Voice Memo locked up on us.

I am using the softcase that came with the LD. I tested this problem some more today and here is what I found. In general, I have no problems with it reseting when using the hold button even when I am playing music through ptunes. I tried using Vmemo again and sliding it into hold and it froze again. Vmemo works fine if you don't put it on hold so that is what I will be doing. When I want to record, I will leave it off hold. FYI, this time when I put it on hold, it only soft reset not secure reset. I don't know what the problem was with it that time.
