I will be upgrading from my Tungsten C to a Treo 650 GSM Unlocked (Cingular). I have 70 apps on the T|C, including DateBk5 V-5.4a. I use Palm Desktop 4.1.4 for syncing and BackupBuddy2 plus BackupBuddy VFS Pro 3.1 for backups:

1. What is the best procedure?
2. Are there any particular pitfalls or steps that I should pay special attention to?
3. I'm aware that I will need the Treo 650 Updater 1.13. When should that be installed in the procedure?

I will be posting elsewhere (IE, the DateBk5 forum in case there are special DateBk5 procedures to follow). Thank you.

I don't know how is it with Palm to Palm, but I had a clie and upgraded to Treo650 and I just have to say this, install apps one by one, don't simply hotsync them over as it screwed up my lil treo ^_^.

I, too, upgraded from a TC to a Treo 650 (Cingular), and I also highly recommend you install apps individually. Rename your current backup folder so that it doesn't install old data into your Treo. My other advice is to get a sizeable SD card. The Treo's memory is totally inadequate. Be aware that the Treo will go into reset loops if memory gets too low. It happened to me today and I had just under 1 MB free.

I recommend installing the update before you hotsync the first time. Use a different username, too. After that, you will want to update all your apps to the latest version, and then sync them one by one. I make it a point to never let my free ram drop below around 14MB by using ZLauncher, but as long as you have over around 4 megs free you will be OK.

zackepceo,

I'm curious... How are you managing to keep 14MB free on your Treo. Are *all* of your apps on your SD card?

I also use Zlauncher, but I guess on some level I resent having to keep virtually everything on my SD card. I have only a couple of problems in RAM-- Agendus Pro, WordSmith, Owner, eWallet, FileZ, Snapper, and Zlauncher (only the programs I use multiple times a day). That's not very much; everything else is on the card. Yet, I'm still brushing up against the memory limitations of the Treo 650. Consequently, I'm (right now) charging my LifeDrive b/c it seems I'll have to carry it around if I want to seriously store data in my PDA.

Yes, I store all of my apps on my SD card except for Butler, Causerie, Documents to Go, PocketTunes, PXA Clocker, Technician, UDMH, and ZLauncher. I've always been fanatical about having as much free RAM on my PDA as possible; I have 6.4MB free on my TG-50.

My only advise is be patient. I am not new to Palm. I have owned several Palm devices over the years and have seamlessly changed from one to the other (my last Palm was a wonderful Zire 72). This was not the case with my Treo 650. I have owned my Treo for about 3 months and have only now gotten it to where I think it is doing all I want it to do. Lack of memory is the main issue. An SD card will help, but many key programs will not perform from the card. I have found it takes time to adjust to the Treo, but there is nothing else on the market as muli-functional, fast and sleek.

Thank you everyone. A friend told me tonight that when he recently ungraded from his m515 (OS 4.1) to v5.2 on my T3 (5.2), that the PIM apps MUST have a "Business" and "Personal" category. I don't know if he means that in all five PIMs there must be both of these categories even if they are unpopulated with data.

Is there any such requirement when uograding from a Tungstn C (5.2.1) to Treo 650 GSM Unlocked (5.4)?

By the way, how do I handle my memory card during the upgrade. It has 103MB on it and parts of or all of as many apps as I could move to it using ZLauncher. I assume that I don't even think of plugging it into the new Treo 650 until after the initial hotsunc to polulate the new PIMs.

But as I begin adding fresh installs of all my old apps and transfer as much as possible to the card, won't that double the number of files for each app that is on the card because I've already transfered the same files to the card in my old Tungsten C days?
